She will be running Sammy’s Run 5k with a loaner stroller for her daughter Kaylan, who has Cerebral Palsy. Kaylan, a beautiful young 13 year old, primarily gets around in a wheelchair but is able to use a walker for short distances. Her 49 lb frame makes it a little easier for care givers to help her with mobility but her light weight can’t compete with this little girl’s strong temperament. Although non-verbal she is able to make her wishes known with her facial expressions and her very strong vocalizations. Jessi and her husband, Franklin Reategui, also have a son, Jesus who is heading for the 6th grade next year. He is planning on running the one mile fun run at Sammy’s Run. Kaylan has been attending Oak Park School for the past six years, ever since Kaylan’s family moved to Sarasota from New Jersey. Oak Park is a unique school that meets the needs of many students with special needs. Kaylan receives Speech & Language Therapy from Robyn Sadlo and Physical Therapy from Maria Sweeney both MTCer’s. She also attends other special classes includ- ing Occupational Therapy, Adaptive Physical Education, Music, Media, Art, Horticulture and Practical Arts. Jessi says that Kaylan’s love for some of her teachers has had a very posi- tive effect on Kaylan’s development. One of her favorites is P.T. Maria says Kaylan loves to move so of course is highly motivated to work on her walking and wheelchair propulsion. It is actually a nice surprise to see her so calm while in the jogging stroller. Jessi was chosen to be the recipient of the stroller because of her interests in so many of the areas that Sammy’s Run is promoting. She runs whenever she can find time. She is pro- moting healthy eating with her fund raising efforts with the Back Pack Kids Program. She is a strong advocate for people with different abilities. Her family takes part in school activi- ties, actually changing a travel commitment so she could attend Sammy’s Run. Also it was heard that she was trying to run with Kaylan in her wheelchair, a very difficult feat. Jessi hasn’t been running long, but has competed in several 5k events including the Phillippi Shore Elementary 7k, at least two 10k races, and a half marathon. She spoke to me of the freedom that running provides, de- scribing a time where she can free her mind and just run. At first, Jessi tried to run with Kaylan in her wheel chair without success. She’s now using a loaned stroller that allows her to run with her daughter more comfort- ably. This loaner stroller is definitely an improvement, but the Freedom Stroller that’s been ordered for Jessi and Kaylan will be a perfect solution to their running needs. Running with Kaylan provides Jessi wonderful bonding time with her daughter, a great necessity in her busy life as a full time working mom, college student, and promoter for fund raising activities. She even organ- izes a group of runners (Kaylan’s Angels) to participate in running events. When you pay your entry fee for Sammy’s Run, you will be helping Jessi meet huge per- sonal goals she set with Kaylan, who can share in the freedom that Jessi feels when she runs, as well as the excitement of race day! 36 YEARS OF FUN AND PARTICIPATION MANASOTA TRACK CLUB Serving Manatee & Sarasota Counties VOLUME 29, NUMBER 05 MAY 2011 More than 385 people “Like” us on facebook! Jessi Choy will receive a Freedom Stroller in June thanks to proceeds from Sammy’s Run 5k, which will take place on Saturday, May 28th at Oak Park Elementary School.

Jessi says that Kaylan’s love for some of her teachers has had a very posi-tive effect on Kaylan’s development.

She is pro-moting healthy eating with her fund raising efforts with the Back Pack Kids Program. She is a strong advocate for people with different

abilities. Her family takes part in school activi-ties, actually changing a travel commitment so she could attend Sammy’s Run. Also it was heard that she was trying to run with Kaylan in her wheelchair, a very difficult feat.

Jessi hasn’t been running long, but has competed in several 5k events including the Phillippi Shore Elementary 7k, at least two 10k races, and a half marathon. She spoke to me of the freedom that running provides, de-scribing a time where she can free her mind and just run. At first, Jessi tried to run with Kaylan in her wheel chair without success. She’s now using a loaned stroller that allows her to run with her daughter more comfort-ably.

She even organ-izes a group of runners (Kaylan’s Angels) to participate in running events.

When you pay your entry fee for Sammy’s Run, you will be helping Jessi meet huge per-sonal goals she set with Kaylan, who can share in the freedom that Jessi feels when she runs, as well as the excitement of race day!

www.manasotatrackclub.orgmanasota track club | maY 2011 3

Have I mentioned recently how excited I am to be part of such an amazing organization? On April 6th, our current MTC board approved my benevolent budget proposal for the upcoming year. By keeping our club expenditures

conservative, we will have considerable funds to support our runners and the running community greatly. I am proud of the amount that has been secured to give to various charitable organizations that make Sarasota a great place to live and run. I urge you to take a look at the detailed budget posted on page 4. Because of the great leadership and membership in past years, we actually had a significant amount of roll over concluding this fiscal year. With that I am elated to announce our recent support to The Girl’s on the Run program and high school summer running camps. This is in addition to the Scholarship fund that will continue to support high school, college-bound runners. The Manasota Track Club is able to give-back to the community while maintaining minimal cost to its members. The cost to be a member will remain $20 for an individual and $25 for a family membership. This is such a bargain with the ever growing race discounts being offered, even at Disney races. You actually are financially better off being a member of the club if you run more than four local (or Disney) races a year.

Rather than April showers, this month brought us HEAT!!! If you were at the Mote Marine Run for the Turtles on Siesta Key Beach, you felt it! Although it was a bit warm, Paula Clark spear-headed another successful year. With an awesome DJ pepping

up the crowd, Mr. Beery’s pouring donated beer, followed by a day on Siesta Beach, I call it the best day ever! Another HOT run in April was the Life in the Son 5K, 10K. Pastor Jon and Sherry Storms organized a flawless event. With the National Anthem being perfectly sung by a five-year old cutie pie, this race had a great start and finish. The course was well staffed and rustic. Many runners were surprised at the land and wildlife so close to Clark Road. I was promised a sight at the peacocks but didn’t run fast enough before they took cover. I did say hello to a few cows though. They kept us all mooooving. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

My highlight for the month of April was The Girl’s on the Run graduation 5K race on Siesta Beach. I volunteered at this event last year and was moved by the all-girl celebration. This year, I had even more incentive to take part. My daughter, Melanie has been part of the 12 week after school program at her school. I have observed her confidence grow with each session. Not only do the girls build up their running stamina, they receive self-esteem building lessons and health education. Sometimes I would arrive early to pick Melanie up and enjoyed listening in on the lesson. My shy little girl was named Mighty Melanie the first class. I always knew she was mighty, but I saw the belief in her whole persona at the completion of the 5K; she was Mighty Melanie. This program has me in awe at what running can do to inspire us at any age.

With that sappy end to my MTC homework assignment for the month, as I write this, I am hoping to see you all at our annual picnic where we can celebrate each other and the inspiration we each bring to the club and our community. If not at the picnic then definitely Sammy’s Run!

In the meantime, run, have fun and enjoy life!

FACeS AT The RACeSMeet Ellen Jones

By Guy Ealey

Kim has asked me to write an introductory article to help MTC readers to get acquainted with Ellen, who will be writing a regular column that will provide infor-mation on running and things relating to running. To get started, I sent an email to the address Kim gave me: [email protected] . Her response came back and said that she and I had actually met briefly at a Sunday morning training run on Anna Maria Island a few years ago. We set a time for a phone conversation, and I found myself scrambling to make notes on a widely varied life that has led Ellen to be a RRCA certified coach, a volunteer running coach with Rae Ann Darling Reed at Manatee High School, a nationally certified personal trainer at Island Fitness on Anna Maria Island, a teacher of cooking classes, and an author of a soon to be released book, “Eat Vegan on $4 a Day.”

To start my conversation with Ellen, I asked the mundane “so how long have you been a runner?” question. How unimaginative, especially when talking to someone who spent eighteen years as an investigative reporter in TV news. She politely answered, “about 30 years”, and then described how she had been featured as a centerfold spread in Walking Magazine, back when baby joggers had not yet been widely marketed . Ellen used to strap her kids on her back for her regular exercise. After being a stay at home mom for six years, Ellen went back to the working world as a stock broker with Smith-Barney in St. Louis, MO.

So then I asked “what got you started with nutrition lifestyle coaching and teaching cooking classes?” That took Ellen back to a time when her sister had been diagnosed with breast cancer, her own colon blockage and a look into her family history of cancer and heart disease. That initiated her personal study in anti-cancer diets and lifestyle changes that could have a positive impact. I won’t go into detail on this subject, though I perceive that Ellen will provide a lot of background in her regular columns in the MTC newslet-ter. One thing that got my attention was that former President Bill Clinton has become a vegan following his major health issues in recent years, as is the Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea.

Ellen pointed out that her husband, Clarence, says he would sooner die than give up steak. He also recognizes that diet plays a part in some of the medications he now must take. I guess that should enable her to show how a vegan and a non-vegan can work together to meet their individual dietary desires. After our phone conversation, I looked up her website at www.vegcoach.com and found that the phone conversation had really not been necessary to obtain a complete background on Ellen. I’m glad we did have the conversation though, and I’m really looking forward to an opportunity to meet up close and personal. Just that brief conversa-tion has piqued my interest in learning more about eating vegan. I have been running lately with Paul Couzelis who is vegan and appears in the best shape of his life. Isn’t it funny how things fall together to have an influence on our lives?

FOOd FOR ThOUghT

It would be difficult to write a fitness column and not talk about the death this

year of america’s fitness icon, Jack lalanne. If you were one of his fans, you probably have already read a little or per-haps a great deal about his life that often surfaces when a legend leaves our world.

the 96 year-old lalanne was known for his amazing strength and giving birth to the fitness movement. much of the equipment he invented still exists in health clubs and fitness gyms all over the world.

the Jack lalanne show ran for more than three dec-ades and was the longest running television exercise pro-gram. Jumping Jacks were named and done in his honor.

In the early 1960s, as lalanne arrived on the exercise scene, 13 percent of americans weighed in as obese. that number has grown to 34 percent today.

readily available fast and cheap foods, laden with salt, fats and corn syrup make it too easy to put on the pounds and too difficult to remove them.

with clients who are overwhelmed by the many changes they think they have to make to lose weight, I stress mak-ing just a few changes to start. the sodas and alcohol are the first to go. alcohol has a fair number of those pesky bad carbs…calories that quickly find their way into the bloodstream and wreak havoc with blood sugar levels.

Here are a few of lalanne’s memorable quotes. “Your waistline is your lifeline.”“Don’t exceed the feed limit.”“ The food you eat today is walking and talking tomorrow.”

“ Ten seconds on the lips and a lifetime on the hips.” (My personal favorite)

“Better to wear out than rust out.”“Do – don’t stew.”lalanne ate tons of fruits and vegetables. He even de-

signed a juicer. I bought one after I saw an infomercial the night my dad died. more power to you if you use one. but it takes time to prep the ingredients and wash the parts. I’m much happier with my 1000 watt blender for smoothies and soups. whatever works, right? In honor of Jack, I give you my blender-made healthy chocolate surprise cake that will be in my soon-to-be-published cookbook, Eat Vegan on $4 a Day*.

CHoColate SuRPRiSe Cake: 1 2/3 cups whole wheat pastry flour (or 2/3 cup regular whole wheat flour and 1 cup all-purpose flour)1 teaspoon baking powder3 teaspoons baking soda3 1/2 cups pitted dates, divided1 can (8 ounces) pineapple chunks in own natural juices, drained1 banana1 cup unsweetened applesauce1 cup shredded beets3/4 cup shredded carrots1/2 cup shredded zucchini3 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 cup chopped walnuts1 cup vanilla soymilk1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. In a blender or food processor, put 3 cups of the dates, along with the pineapple, banana, and applesauce. slice the remaining 1/2 cup dates into 1/2 inch thick pieces. In a large bowl, put the sliced dates, beets, carrots, zucchini, cocoa powder, walnuts, soymilk, vanilla, and flour mixture and mix well. add the small bowl and blended mixture to the large bowl and mix well. spread in a 9 x 13 nonstick baking pan or two 9 inch round pans. bake for 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

oPtional CHoColate iCing:1 cup raw macadamia nuts or raw cashews, unsalted1/3 cup brazil nuts or hazelnuts 1 cup vanilla soymilk2/3 cup pitted dates2 tablespoons cocoa powder1 teaspoon vanilla extractIn a blender, put the nuts, soymilk, dates, cocoa powder and vanilla. Process all the ingredients until they are smooth and creamy. smooth over warm or cooled cake and serve.

P.S. Hubby had no idea beets, carrots and zucchinis were in his cake. Wink, wink. Chocolate (alone) is a good anti-oxidant!

*I wrote this book after watching too many TV news stories that said you can’t eat healthfully on a budget. As a former TV investigative reporter, finan-cial consultant and the only one in my family without breast cancer, heart disease or diabetes, I set out to dispel the myth. Stay tuned.

Ellen Jaffe Jones is an aerobics and Fitness association of america nationally certi-fied personal trainer, high school running coach, cookbook author, columnist, cooking instructor and accomplished runner. she works most weekday mornings at Island Fitness (next to Eat Here) on anna maria Island. Her book, “Eat Vegan on $4 a Day,” will be out by summer. she was a 2-time Emmy winning investigative reporter for 18 years and is still trying to investigate how to avoid family genes that gave her mom, aunt and both sisters breast cancer. as her cardiologist said, “that diet and exercise thing seem to be working.”

ShARK’S TOOTh 10K Venice, April 9, 2011

25Th ANNUAL RUN fOR The TURTLeS Siesta Key, April 2, 2011

AT The RACeSThe Shark’s Tooth 10K in Venice was the “only game in town” this weekend and it wasn’t even in town. The festival is staged from the Venice Airport Festival Grounds. The race starts and finishes on a closed runway. A loop course takes the runners through a neighborhood on the north side of the airport, south along the beach-front road into Caspersen Beach Park and returning along the Venetian Waterway Trail to the Festival Grounds. The surface ranges from hard-packed sand to concrete. The race, in its second year, drew about 600 runners.

By Dan Gould

Clear skies and a temperature in the low 60’s greeted the runners and walkers who came to Siesta Key Beach on April 2nd for the 25th Annual Run for the Turtles, the proceeds of which benefit Mote Marine Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program. Mote, founded in 1955, is an independent nonprofit organization and has seven centers for marine research.

The events of the day were a one mile fun run or walk that started at 7:30 A.M. and a 5K, sanctioned by the Manasota Track Club, at 8:00 A.M. More than 1,000 runners and walkers took part.

Life iN The SON 2 - 5K/10K Sarasota, April 16, 2011

AT The RACeSThere were four races in the Sarasota-Bradenton area on Saturday and I chose the Life in the Son in Sarasota which offered a 5K or 10K. They benefited four good causes and it was a shame they all came on the same day. Last year I ran the 5K benefiting autism, but wasn’t aware that it was back this year until two weeks before the race. Too late!

Life in the Son 2 was staged from the First Christian Church in Sarasota and benefited local ministries including a food pantry. The 10K course was USATF certified and members of my Sarasota club (MTC) were involved in the planning and staging of the event. This was my swan song race of the season.

The weather didn’t inspire any great expectations - 70 degrees and humidity hanging in the trees. It was a repeat of last week’s Shark’s Tooth. The pre-race instructions did give those of us who signed up for the 10K an out. If we got to the 5K turnaround and wanted to turn, we could. We just had to inform a race official when we finished. This was not a chip race.

With two races, it took some time to get the awards together and handed out, but it was a fine morning for socializing and I had a chance to say “See you next season” to a number of friends. I’m going through my semi-annual separation anxiety. It will happen in October when I prepare to return. I’m blessed with two great worlds and people I love in both.

COACh TiPS

after a nice cool winter this year, there can be few com-plaints from runners about recent running temperatures. but while the Florida winters can be variable, we all know

that the summers are guaranteed to be hot and humid. so how can we better prepare for those steamy runs we know are in our future? First an abbreviated explanation of some of the physiology involved paraphrased from lore of running by Dr. tim noakes mD. the full version of this document contains some 80 pages on temperature regulation during Exercise for those of you who want to delve into the subject further.

as we exercise, our muscles produce heat when our stored energy is converted to mechanical energy. the body is not very efficient at this conversion and as much as 70% of the energy used in muscle contraction is released as heat rather than as energy to propel us forward. blood is heated as it passes through the muscles and distributes the added heat through-out the body particularly to the skin. at the skin, the heat can be carried away by air currents. surface heat is also lost when sweat evaporates.

as we increase exercise intensity, the body will direct blood flow to the muscles to assist with the added exertion in prefer-ence to increasing blood flow to the skin. the result is an increase in heat production and a decrease in the ability to lose that heat. controlling running intensity is a key factor in keep-ing body temperatures within limits. Humidity is a measure of the water content of the air. as humidity increases, the ability to lose heat by sweating decreases since the air around the skin cannot absorb additional water. In this case sweat does not vaporize, but rolls off the body without any cooling effect.

with sweating, fluid is removed from the body causing dehydration. Dehydration increases the heart rate and body temperature and reduces the heart’s output and stroke volume as well as blood flow to the skin and the exercising muscles all in proportion to the degree of dehydration. studies have shown that fluid intake does little to actually cool you down. However it will help to keep you going since it will keep your blood volume close to normal levels which in turn keeps your sweat rate high. since oxygen is delivered to the muscles through the blood, maintaining your blood volume through drinking, enables your heart to deliver more oxygen per contraction and perform better than if you allow your body to become too dehydrated.

Having reviewed a few basic concepts, let’s see what practical steps we can take to manage running in the heat. Here are a just a few suggestions I hope will help you in the coming months.

PRePaRation• Keep your daily fluid intake up. take a drink bottle with you

on the run. Plan your route to include shade and know where water is available, or run loops back to your home or car to replenish fluids.

• Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, and a hat or visor. since the head is a major source of heat loss wear a

mesh cap or even better, a visor, to allow heat to escape. wear light colored loose fitting clothing.

• For the optimum body temperature prior to your run, con-sider drinking ice water while you take a cold shower this will help delay the inevitable rise in body temperature.

• To assist with cooling try one of these techniques. Place a wet sponge on your head, put ice cubes on top, cover with cap. or, fold a bandana in diamond shape place ice cubes along the edge, roll it up and tie it around your neck. keeping the head and neck cool helps, because blood flow there is close to the surface of the skin

• Pick your training time. run in the cooler hours, early a.m. or late afternoon. check the weather forecast for temperatures and cloud cover for the day. For long runs, an early morning start is usually more humid and will get warmer as you run. when my current triathlon schedule calls for a long run it is often the second workout of the day. starting the run in late afternoon is a little warm but as time goes by, temperatures gradually cool down making the last stages of the run much more tolerable especially when I am tired.

on tHe Run • Easing into your run slowly on hot days will prolong the time

before your body temperature reaches uncomfortable levels.

• Running at a lower intensity is the most effective way to prevent your body from overheating. a lower intensity requires less muscle action and therefore less heat will be generated by working muscles.

• Stay hydrated with regular fluid intake. water is fine up to 1 hour, after that a sports drink is preferable. If you use gels, essentially a concentrated drink, remember to take them with water for optimum absorption. taking gels with a sport drink increases the carbohydrate concentration resulting in slower absorption.

ReCoveRy• Gradually slow down at the end of your run finishing at a

walking pace. this will allow you cool down as well as provide recovery for the legs.

• After a long hot run I have found that relaxing in a pool while drinking iced water really works wonders in terms of reduc-ing body temperature, by cooling both the outside surface of the skin and the internal core. gently exercising your legs in the water which will help loosen them up too.

• Drink ample fluids and watch for any dramatic weight loss which will be mostly lost fluid. Eat as your appetite returns.

RATe The RACeSI rate the races based on 4 criteria: organization, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at [email protected].

SPRingFeSt 5k & 12kthe organization was excellent. the parking was

convenient and packet pick-up was a breeze. the tech t-shirt design was way better than past years (cya crappy flower design). this could very well be the comeback race of the year!! nice job, Felicia ☺

the course is a nice trek through Palmer ranch. I did the 5k and it was marked right on 3.1 miles. this race really needs to be put back into the racing series and I’ll tell you why…when the course splits and 5k race participants go in one direction and 12k runners head in another, there is no incentive for the runners in the 12k to actually complete the 12k course and just say “to heck with it” and do the 5k instead!!!. this is quite troubling for a 5k slacker such as myself☺. so let’s get this back in the racing series and the good runners can do the 12k and I can place in the 5k…maybe☺ oh, and one more thing.. It would be even better if the start times were staggered for the 5k and the 12k. with a growing amount of participants, it sure would be nice to have a little space at the starting line.

the awards were nice trophies for the overall winners. they had new and improved medals for the individual age group winners, with different colored ribbons indicating 1st thru 6th.

the post race party was excellent. they had chef John’s hot dogs, carrabba’s pasta salad, m&m cookies, bagels and beer and no bananas, need I say more.☺ they did have a hundreds of dollars of raffles to keep us entertained while we waited for the awards and during the awards ceremony☺

I give the springfest 12k & 5k a 9.95 out of 10. now if we could just get this great race to fall on a different day than another great race down in Venice, that would make me very happy! why schedule all the fun on the same day??? springfest has returned to its past glory and now we can call it springfeast again☺.

RobinSon PReSeRve 5kthe organization was very good as far as packet pick-up

and getting your chip, but the parking was just awful!!! this race has gotten to be one of bradenton’s largest and they are going to have to come up with a better way to accommodate all those vehicles. I found a good spot, so I thought; we got out and started walking to the starting area. an officer came over and told us we couldn’t park where we parked, for absolutely no reason, so I moved the truck about 20 feet up the road and that was okay, insert head scratching movement here☺!!

the course itself is fantastic!! Very scenic, like the rave run pictures in runner’s world magazine and it’s got almost every kind of running surface, from asphalt to crushed shell, dirt paths to wooden bridges and with all the uphills and downhills, it was plenty challenging for this flat Florida spoiled runner☺ the course was marked right on 3.1 miles and they were handing out water right after you finished. the results were post lickity split times☺

the awards were huge framed tiles for the overall winners and smaller tiles for the top 3 in each age group. okay I’m going to say this again, with as big as the bradenton races are getting, let me preach on, they really need to go 6 deep in each age group. a ribbon is a nice award for 4th thru 6th and I’m not saying this because I was 4th again☺

the post race party was awesome!! they had rigatoni, chef salad, chocolate chip balls and beer!! Plus when all the health nut runners had exhausted all the beer…world of beers came through and brought out 2 more kegs to keep the party going!!☺ they also had awesome raffles to keep us entertained while we stood in the beer line☺

I give the robinson Preserve 5k a 9.95 out of 10. Fun challenging course, great post race party, just a little problem with the parking.

Run FoR tHe tuRtleS 5kthe organization was very good. You just picked up

your shirt, warmed up to the DJ cranking the tunes, then headed to the beach to run the, on time, race. mote marine spared no expense on this race as the dolphins came out to greeting us just before the start of the race…how did they do that?☺

the beach tide was a tad high as everyone kept inching up the beach as the pre-race tide got higher and higher. the winds were pretty mild for the beach and the temps were cool. In other words, near perfect conditions and the course was marked right on 3.1. there was a water stop just past the turn around and they were handing out water when you finished. there was a bit of a traffic jam in the finishing chute as the runners were coming in faster than they could hand out the cards.

the awards were: overall male got a night stay at the Helmsley sandcaslte on lido with dinner for 2, and the overall female got a piece of white gold turtle jewelry. 1st thru 3rd got very nice gold, silver and bronze turtle medals and ribbons for 4th thru 6th

the post race party was great. the Pita Pit was there with a variety of different samples to try, there were also apples, oranges, bagels and un-cut bananas☺ also mr. beery’s was there with 2 kegs of beer!!! life is good ☺

I give the run for the turtles 5k a 9.95 out of 10. beach, bling and beers, how can you beat it?☺

SHaRkS tootH 10kthe organization was excellent. Packet pick-up and

parking were very convenient. I also liked how much room we had at the beginning of the race. with as big as the races have been getting, there has been quite a bit of congestion at the start…this one started on a runway and there was plenty of room to get up to speed quickly.

the course was a nice run starting at Venice airport and winding through the nearby streets, down Harbor road to caspersan beach, then there was a little trail running until you hit the path on the intracoastal waterway and this was mostly an uphill battle until you got to the finish! this was especially tough considering it was in miles 4 and 5!! there were water stops every 2 miles and also at the finish line. How about we start in the reverse direction and go downhill for the first couple of miles?? I’m thinking Pr’s for everyone!☺

the awards for the overall winners were nice glass mugs and the age group award winners got tiles with the sharks tooth logo on it. once again this race only went 3 deep, let me preach on☺ and yes I came in 4th again!! Just one suggestion, when posting the results use both sides of the board so you don’t have 600 people climbing over each other to see how they did.☺

the post race party was most excellent. they had Pita’s from the Pita Pit, yogurt fruit cups, pastries, cookies, ice cream, pretzels and soda. they also had some good raffles to keep us busy while we waited for the awards.

I give sharks tooth 10k a 9.95 out of 10. I’m starting to see a pattern here…it was just a great month for races!!! we live in a running mecca…shhh not to loud I don’t need anymore competition☺tHe QuiCk 1,2,3 on uPComing RaCeS:

5K County Line Run: never done this one last year, takes place in Englewood, same day as the Island run

Island Run 5K: always a pretty warm one☺ and usually has a really good post race party, lots of raffles

Diva’s and Dudes 5K: Pretty good race last year, in Payne Park and it’s called Payne for a reason☺ nice awards, so-so post race party.

Sammy’s Run 5K: this is a must do for this area, earlier start time this year to stave off the heat, awesome awards and great post race party!!

see you at the races!!

awsome! challenging! would do it again (but probably not immediately!).

started out at the finish line of boston at just after 4:30am when a local boston tV crew was filiming another sole attempting the Double boston. He had 4 pacers, and at least 3 bike support. I didn’t want to interefere with his cancer fundraising and publicity, so I waved at him and started off solo/unsupported down boylston.

as I followed the course backwards, I followed the no Parking signs (many of which had pictures of a runner, and stated closed 4/18). Port-o-lets were also reminders that I was on course. unfortunately, I became disoriented where 2 major state highways intersected at the reservoir, and as chance would have it I chose the hard route. not unexpect-ed for me, since doing the Double boston is really about do-ing it the hard way. after about 3/4 of a mile, I came to the realization that something was wrong. I consulted my map, and re-consulted it, and eventually looked for help (boston marathon is so well-known, surely the locals could help!). the first two bystanders pleaded ignorance, but 2 female college runners told me to make a couple turns to get back on commonwealth. middle aged, balding male ultrarunners always prefer getting directions from college girls, so I was actually pleased to have made the error and allow them to help me.

I had hoped to beg/borrow/steal water from the aid sta-tions, but with the official race start at 10:00am, there were no water stations set up yet. as the famished immigrants likely see mirages in the desert, I saw large Poland spring water delivery trucks frequently along my route (but they never stopped). In retrospect, the water trucks were leaving boston and following the route backwards to the start, and I never got water until they were returning from Hopkinton (and I was at mile 21 from my start at their finish). the 23.8oz water bottle I received gratis at the expo turned into my salvation. unlike aron ralston in 127hours, I knew I only had 4.5hours to go, so I hoarded my water. when I ran out of water at mile 13, I decided to use my $20 emergency reserve to prevent a DnF and stopped at a 7-11. as luck would have it, my $ stretched further since I found a fresh dollar bill in the gutter just when I spotted the store. I got a quart of gatorade and refilled my trusty expo bottle, and started off again towards the offical start.

I had visualized that the streets would also all be closed. However, there were many individuals attempting to beat the road closures, and I was forced on multiple occasions to run in the gutter or on the concrete sidewalk while the cars literally sped along. this would take a harmful affect later.

going out, I saw people laying out their lawn chairs. since I did not have to negotiate other runners, I could see the wonderful hardwood trees that Florida lacks, the ancient wooden homes and stores from the 1700’s, and

the magnolias which were just starting to bloom. the course was beautiful, and I am shamed to say that although I have run boston four times before, I really never appreciated the aesthetics of the course as much as I did yesterday running out to the start.

I was joined for 5 miles by another runner, gavin, who qualified with 2:57 time (much faster than my 3:09, but he was a lot younger than my 45). we helped each other follow the port-o-lets/

barricades/signs. we spoke in an unhurried fashion, as most distance runners enjoy during a long run. Prior to my decision to double up, I received an email from John Pyle, who hooked me up with bart Yasso, whose wife has done Double boston about 7 times before. I was hoping a crowd of 15 people would be there to share the pain/joy, but it was only gavin and I.

after I neared Hopkinton, I felt pretty exhausted. the multiple hills and 25mph constant headwind I was fighting took a big bite out of my reserves. In Hopkinton, first the handicapped, then the hand cycles (I guess handy people are privileged) went by first, then the push rims, and then Dick Hoyt. the Hoyt team looked dejected, and ignored my energetic praise. they also ignored the crowd, and seemed like they were bent on a mission but have forgotten what the mission really was.

when the elite women started, I was about 1/2 mile from the start. unfortunately, I had to vacate the course, and was climbing rock walls/mud/blankets. all the spectators were looking up the hill for the women, and I was coming from the wrong direction and could not get their attention to get past them. It took several precious minutes to trip/fall over the spectators until I could jump some barricades and get to the Hopkinton commons. I had hoped to meet family here and re-supply, but my brother’s family didn’t make it up there, so I re-loaded with a hot dog and a gatorade and some chomps.

my stomach immediately rebelled, and I felt waves of nausea. as an endurance runner, this is really a sign that you are still alive and human, and after about an hour it should pass.

I started the race feeling “on empty,” but my batteries re-charged as the mass of the world’s best passed me by. I had a great start corral, but my current pace of 10min/mile was far off my qualitfying time, so I was swallowed by wave after wave until around mile 13, when I started to pass the injured and limping runners. I enjoyed again the thriving crowd. boston clEarlY has the best crowds, since the small towns cheer for every runner and not just kinfolk. lit-tle children bounced on trampolines and gave me watermel-on, fresh oranges, twizzlers, pretzels, and high-fives. what a way to do an ultra, with such great crowd support!

the pavement was unrelenting, and the hills were cruel. as I motored up Heartbreak, I was suprized to see that I was the fastest hill cimber in my surrounding area. I

as for me, extremely disappointed.that was probably the worst race I have ever run. Just because of what happened.

learned a hard valuable lesson. I ran with a friend, of a friend who

is an experienced marathoner. He as going to pace me through a 2:47. He said we’ll be at halfway between 1:23:00 to 1:23:30. He said this race is a 10/10/10.

• First 10 miles, hold back, hold back, hold back.

• Next 10 miles, not yet, not yet, not yet.

• Last 10K, right after heartbreak at mile 21, go for it.

at the halfway we were at 1:23:03, perfect, I was itching to pick up the 6:20 pace that we were on, down to 6:15 or so. I left him at mile 14.5. mile 15 was 6:04, not a gooD IDEa. I was warned not to attack the hill, just get through them.

Instead of running 30 to 45 seconds slower, like 6:50’s or so. I hit them hard, 6:10 to 6:15. I PaID for it half way heartbreak hill. started feeling dizzy so had to stop and walk for about 100 yards, right before mile 23. Drank some gatorade/water, felt better and was able to continue running.

this is where it killed me.mile 24, right hamstring tightened up,

could not walk, had to stop, stretched/massaged for 2 minutes, finally was able to continue.

mile 25, left hamstring, same thing, stopped, stretched/massaged for 2 minutes, then continued.

mile 26 almost there, right hamstring again. same, could not walk, stretched 2 minutes.

limped across the finish line.should have stayed on course and

not gotten greedy (ha). lesson learned, the hard way.

race re cap here...my left knee went just past the 1/2 way point. saw stars in the day light!

up until this point I was just taking it easy for the hills of miles 18-21.. Finished the race though..5:32 ugH!!!

saw the Dr. yesterday..get the results of the mrI on monday..

oh well!!! next year..maybe!

TidBiTSboston marathon RecapsFrom Adam Bright, MD (continued) From Ricardo Lomas

From Dan Pollock

was also the fastest downhiller. I just wasn’t very great on the flats. I think my bridge training and ultra experience helped me more than the back of the packers who were my new compatriots.

when I got to the 20mile mark (around mile 50 for me, with the wrong turn and all), I was flying past people. boston is notoriously tough in the late stages for those who start out too fast. I thought I would limp in, but comparatively was doing well as I neared the citgo station and made my final turn up boylston. like the other runners, I started my srpint for the finish (I know some people could probably walk faster than me after the 54miles), but was grinning ear to ear. my finish time (4:45) was my slowest marathon time ever, but I have never done a 28mile warmup run before the race itself before, either.

after the finish, I snuck a second medal in my shorts since I had done the boston marathon twice. Hopefully the word won’t get back to the officials, but if so I will return it. I figured I had earned 2 medals for doing it twice in one day.

overall, this was one of my favorite ultras. the pavement and the hills are brutal, but the crowds and the history and the scenery are the best.
