Happy April!

We are set for a busy race schedule this month. First up we are at the beach for the 29th Annual Mote Run for the Turtles on April 4th. This year, Mote has partnered with Positive Tracks, a national, youth-cen-tric nonprofit, to encourage people age 23 and younger to raise funds for Mote’s sea turtle conservation and research efforts. Every dollar raised by youth is matched by Positive Tracks and goes to Mote to benefit its sea turtle conservation and research. For more information on their partnership or to register go to Mote.org.

On April 18, it’s the Pineview Python Run. I didn’t get to run this one last year, so I’m really looking forward to it. The course winds through some neighborhoods around the school and then you finish up on the track! I do like running on a track but I’m not sure if I’m going to love it or hate it on race day. Guess it depends on how much I want to push it. I’m getting close to finally getting a sub30 on a 5k, but having to shave off those last seconds is hard, especially with it getting warmer out.

If I fail at the Python Run then my last shot at sub30 is the Pines Run to Remember on April 25. Another race that I didn’t get to run last year, and another one that I’m looking forward to. This race starts and ends at the Ringling Museum. From what I’ve been told the course is shady, so that’s good. The Pines Run to Remember is also a new addition to the 2015 MTC/New

Balance Racing Series. I’m sure all of our fast runners will be out there tearing up the course!

On the subject of the Racing Series. We originally had ten events in the series. Unfortunately two events have been can-celled – the SAL Half Marathon and the 5k Classic(Special Olympics). These were both November races. The series will con-tinue with the remaining events and your best seven out of eight will count.

These are the series races that we have left for the year: Pines Run to Remember;

Phillippi Shores 7k; Bill’s Beer Run; and Jingle & Jog 5k. So if you need the points make sure you sign up for the Pines Run to Remember (sign up here: pinesruntoremember.org).

It’s nowhere near October but the 2015 Bill’s Beer Run committee just had their first meeting. An email about MTC member early registration will go out in May. Please make sure your membership is in good standing.

One last thing, we have some special 40th an-niversary shirts for sale on imathlete. It’s the cool vintage logo that Team MTC was sporting at the Team Challenge last year. We’re only taking orders until April 15th. After that date … they’re gone. For order details check out page 17.

See ya at the races!

Faces at the raceswould try to set up one or two of those as the place to meet. It was a 4 mile run at that time, with no tee shirts or awards. Members would volunteer to be race director, and members would bring food to share for after the run.

Walter was vice-President with Walt Rothenbach as President in one of the early years. In those days, the vice-President would succeed the President the following year. Walter said Rothenbach was a real organizer, and worked with Sarasota County Parks and Recreation. Meetings weren’t held in the same place each month, and there were many members in attendance regularly. There was no newsletter in those days, so runners went to the meetings to learn when and where races would be held.

Walter has been running for a lot of years, and he is still at it. he will age up to 90 in June, and is currently training to compete in the 5k at the national Senior Games this fall in Minneapolis, Mn. This is an event for which one must qualify. Walter did so by competing in the Florida Senior Games in the 5k road race in Cape Coral last December, where he won the 85-89 age group. In the national Senior Games, one competes at the age attained on race day, so Walter will compete in 90-94. I asked Walter what sort of pace he ran, “back in the days”. he said he ran a 5 mile race in 35 minutes, so he was about a seven minute miler, but probably more of a 7:30 pace most of the time.

Walter always liked competition, whether as a runner, or any of the other sports in which he participated, and he says he did them all. Whatever he did, he always tried to get better. he said he always enjoyed participating at Gasparilla, but he described an incident that occurred at the Bay to Bay race one year. This was a point to point race, about 7 miles. Participants would ride buses to the start, and board another bus after the race. MTC chartered a bus for the trip, and when the bus stopped at a toll station on the return trip, one rider stood up and announced “isn’t this the bus back to the start?” he had climbed on the wrong bus! al Petz took up a collection from the MTC riders, to pay for a cab to take the guy back to the start area.

another favorite charter trip was for the Peachtree 10k race in atlanta.

I once asked Walter if he had been a doctor at one time. he said no, I was a pilot, and he said it with that ever present smile on his face. Walter was drafted into the navy in 1943, and flew Corsairs off of carriers. The Corsair was a propellor driven fighter plane. Flight training was in a navy n2S, a biplane, which had no electronics on board. The instructor would ride in the front seat with the student in the rear seat. To communicate, the instructor had a cloth funnel like affair connected to a tube that extended back to the student who had a headset the sound came through. It was one way communication. There was a mirror in front of the instructor where he could see the student give a thumbs up to acknowledge understanding of the instruction. Training took place in Memphis, Tn. Before Walter ended his flying career, he was flying the jet fighter plane known as the F4D-1, also flying off a carrier deck.

There was a period after WWII when Walter returned to college at Penn

State where he graduated. he remained in the navy Reserve during that time. Walter did not get caught up in WWII fighting, but was assigned to an anti-submarine squadron following the war. he flew a navy TBF, which was a torpedo bomber fighter which had been converted to carry sensing equipment used in anti-submarine surveillance. Later, he was trained in the navy F9 fighter jet, with training in Olathe, KS. Then he served as a flight instructor in Pensacola, FL where he and Liz met.

after 26 years in the navy, Walter retired at 44 years of age. after retirement, he was a high school guidance counsellor in virginia. after Walter and Liz moved to Sarasota, Liz worked for a company that was heavily involved in the land development of Lakewood Ranch. Walter worked in vocational rehabilitation, and became involved with blind services. Walter retired in 1991 at age 66, but worked with Lighthouse of Manasota for 19 years after his retirement.

how do you cram such a full life into two typed pages? Check back in several years when we write the sequel! I think Walter plans to compete in the national Senior Games in the 100+ age group, ten years from now!

Bill hayman came to Sarasota in the early 80s and opened Mr. Gattis, a franchise pizza restaurant, across from the hospital on the South Trail. his good food and laid back atmosphere were natural drawing cards for folks like us MTCers. Soon after the opening, he joined the club and for the next 20 years or so, he and his buddies ran uncounted races in Florida and out of state, including the new York and Marine Corps marathons. he ran every Peach Tree 10K from its start until his legs started to give out a few years ago.

early in his running career he and four of his buddies formed the very informal group known as the Sunny Beachers. Bill was the leader. he had a knack for coming up with ideas to get things done for MTC without going through the club organization. Like the time the Sunny Beachers set up a race on Siesta Beach with the finish line and all the trappings. The runners ran down to the wall and back, but when they got back, the finish line was gone. nobody was there. It was april fool’s day. The Beachers were found in the parking lot cooking hot dogs

and serving beer for the “lost” runners.

he had an affinity for special needs individuals, and after his stint as a restaurateur, he became a teacher at Oak Park School, he taught exceptional Student education there for 22 years, never taking off a day from work. he was the Oak Park School Teacher of the Year in 2003-2004.

Bill was a volunteer from the start, participating in every aspect of the club. Before the age of the chip timer he could be found at almost all the local races handing out sticks or cards at the finish line,

particularly those runs that benefitted younger school kids.

In 1999 he won the Manasota Track Club’s highest honor, the Tingle-Petz award.

Bill died on March 6, 2015 from Leukemia. everyone who knew him, especially his students and those who ran with him, loved him.

at the racesrace recaPmtC ultraOscar Scherer, February 21 2015 Recap by Dave Siegwald

Once again the weather gods were on our side this year. The morning dawned with a temperature of 45 degrees and a forecast for a bright and sunny day in Oscar Scherer Sate Park. The trails were in great shape, thanks to a nice 24 hours of rain a couple of days earlier. Our run is all trails and the course consists of loops that measure 7.75 miles. So the 25kers do 2 loops and the 50kers do 4.

We’ve all heard the saying that the first shall be last and the last shall be first. at least part of that applies to our 25K this year. hector Guzman signed up at the very last minute. his bib number was the last given out, so he was last in that respect. That wasn’t the case for hector in the race. he took the lead after a casual start by all and completed the first lap in 56:30 and then he put it on cruise control to finish in first place at 1:47:45, twelve minutes ahead of Shane Lewis, who took 2nd.

It is tough to run at this time of the year in Minnesota, so Kristy McGiffert was looking for a little warmer climate, when she noticed our race. She made the trip down for a visit and topped it off with a really nice run and a first place for the women in the 25K. Kristy ran the first lap in an hour and only added two minutes to her second lap split to finish in2:02:03, seven minutes ahead of Sally vannuland.

Meanwhile, back on the course, the lead 50kers were having their way with the trails. Two nights before the ultra the Fleet Feet store on Osprey ave. was in the process of moving to a location downtown. They had the idea of having a run from the old store to the new. The one catch was that the old store still had some items that needed to be taken to the new store. So, the runners were asked to grab something to take with them on the run. By the time adam Bright got to Fleet Feet there were very few things left to carry. One was a refrigerator. So, adam hoisted it up on his shoulder and made the journey, running. Bear that in mind when you consider that adam made his way around our course and completed the first lap in 61:38. adam never relinquished the lead and finished the 50K race with a 4:29:48 for the overall male award. next year he’ll probably look for a washing machine to train with.

So, if the pattern were to continue, an out-of-town woman would finish first in the 50K. Well, as it turned out, anna Weisbrodt came in from Denver for the race. In the “Bright vein” she took the lead in the first lap, which she completed in 1:08:42. anna ran some great splits, very even, and finished with a 4:46:25 to win the women’s crown.

Scott Boe is a Tampa runner. Scott sent in his application to me in early February. a week later it dawned on him that the run was on the day he was supposed to take his daughter on a

college weekend visit. he called to tell me and I tore up his entry fee check. Race day arrived and so did Scott. as it turned out the college trip had been postponed so he decided to come on down and re-sign up. Scott ran the first lap in 1:09:34 and continued each of the next three laps in almost even splits. The 48-year old finished with 4:46:00 to take the men’s Masters award.

The women’s Masters race reversed the pattern. now it was a local runner’s turn to grab first place. and grab it she did, with gusto and, a great cheering section. Melissa Reifschneider decided that this was to be her race. She was right. Melissa finished with a 5:05:49 for the Masters title, bettering her competition by 31 minutes. her competition is no slacker. Jennifer Glassburn, 50,

completed her 19th MTC ultra that day. another woman of note (actually there were many) was 21 year old Jordan Bueche who was running her first 50K. Jordan ran a great race and finished with a 4:53:54.

We always give Geezer awards to the top in the over 65 category. The Geezer male (John Izzo, 65) winner didn’t really run like a Geezer, finishing with a 6:07:01. To say that Carol Westerman is in a class by herself, understates the truth. Carol has won the Geezer female award for years. The classy 76 year old continued her winning ways this year. Thanks for coming out Carol.

There are some nice pictures on the Facebook Group (MTC ultra) page.

We always strive to keep our entry fee reasonable for our runners, while at the same time taking care of them and making some money for our charity (villa La Paz Foundation). This year’s “shirts” were zippered hoodies and we had plenty of food to keep everybody fueled, both during the race and afterwards. Many of our runners made an extra donation on top of their entry fees. Thank you. In the end we managed to donate in excess of $3000 (still calculating as this is being written) to villa La Paz. everybody won on Feb 21st. a big thanks to the volunteers who made the race possible. You guys are the best!!

race rePortIt’s pretty much all runnable except…

By Rae Ann Darling Reed

Words I had never heard describe a race course before I asked what the Paris Mountain 16K Trail Race was like: “It’s pretty much all runnable except the ten minutes it takes to ‘hike’ up the mountain.” I have to thank Brian G. who not only answered my question on facebook the night before the race but who also saved a few of us with excellent directions out on the course.

Typically my vacations involve a race so when a friend who attends Furman university in Greenville, SC invited me to visit her for the weekend, she not only found a great, inexpensive flight for me but a trail race. I booked the ticket and signed up for the race without even researching it. During my trip from Florida to South Carolina, I decided to find out more about this Paris Mountain trail race I was about to run. The distance was perfect since I was scheduled to run ten miles on Saturday anyway. I found the Greenville Track Club – Trail Runners group on facebook, posted my question, and received some very interesting answers.

nervous about running up a mountain, I awoke race morning to SnOW! Yes, snow on november 1st. I was definitely having second thoughts about doing this race. I mean, I moved to Florida almost 20 years ago to escape this weather. We arrived at Paris Mountain at 7:00 a.m. in complete darkness after a short snow removal session so we could see out the car windows. Dreading the cold, I picked up my bib number and started to warm up in the parking lot. I was wearing all the layers of running clothes that I brought with me. after jogging and doing my dynamic warm up, I felt warm enough to remove some layers so I raced in shorts, a long sleeve shirt, a light jacket, and gloves. I am so thankful that I packed my Brooks adrenaline trail shoes!

That extra tread definitely saved me on the slippery course.

Right before the start, the race director told us to take a map or follow the guy in front of us since all the course markings were washed away by the snow and rain. We were also offered a bottle of water to carry since they did not want to put volunteers out on the course in this cold weather to hand out water. I really did not know what to expect. The biggest hill I train on is the Ringling Bridge.

The course was beautiful. as we ascended Paris Mountain all I could think about was the beauty all around me. I wished I had a camera to try to

capture it. almost the entire trail was single track with lots of rocks, roots, twists, turns, and wet leaves. I just kept repeating to myself: “breathe, focus, and lift your feet.” Once we reached the part that was not runnable I tried to enjoy the scenery and take it all in but I had to focus even more on the terrain so I would not trip or fall behind. The higher we went up the mountain, the more snow we encountered. The wind was whipping the snow off the trees so it felt like it was snowing on us.

Once we began the descent, the race was really on. I moved from third female to first and ran down those hills and switchbacks with reckless abandon like I used to in my high school and college cross country days. I don’t remember thinking about speeding up; it was like instinct just took over. I earned my patch as the overall female winner of the race. I’d like to say that the mountain and those hills were no match for this Florida girl but even four days after the race I had to walk backwards down the stairs.

rate the racesBy Terry Deshaies

I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organization, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at [email protected].

hooter’s to hooter’s halF marathoN: This is just a consistently great race year after year!! I think I said that last year and the year before and the year before that☺ It takes place at hooter’s on 41 in Ft. Myers and ends at the same hooter’s. I think I said that too!☺ This year the race temps were in the high 60’s and maybe creeping into the mid 70’s by race end. By far the best weather we’ve ever had at this race. This year I tried something different and did a relay with Randy Peachey. I told him that I would do the first part of the race because the bridge, which is equivalent to the Ringling Bridge is in the first half of the race. Somehow my memory failed me and the bridge was in the second half of the race!! Darn my memory ☺ My half, the first half, was as flat as a pancake and as soon as you get to the half-way point to exchange BIBs that’s where the bridge is!! how could I have been so wrong??? There is also another smaller bridge to go over right after the big bridge. Then you get to turn around and do it all over again!! I felt so bad for Randy that I drank a couple of beers in his honor while I waited for him to finish!! There was plenty of water and Gatorade out on the course and the half-way point was marked really close at 6.61

The awards were once again huge 24oz beer mugs along with a stuffed hooters owl for the overalls, masters and 1st thru 3rd in each age group. everyone who finished got a nice hooters Owl Medal.

The post race party was once again awesome. They had chicken wings galore and tons of apples, oranges, grapes and of course beer!! There was a live band to keep the party going long after all the awards were handed out!!

I once again give the hooter’s to hooter’s half Marathon a perfect 10!! awesome tech shirts, new hooters medal design, huge beer mug awards, a post race party like no other and once again they let me take over the beer truck ☺ My reputa-tion precedes me … they don’t even cut the bananas in half anymore ☺

sarasota First WatCh halF marathoN: Finally the power of the press comes thru for the first time ever, as this near St. Patrick’s Day race finally had green tech shirts!! I have been commenting on this for the past 10 years!! now if I could just get them to listen about the food!! ☺

The pre-race organization was excellent. Parking was a breeze and they had plenty of Jiffy Johns!! They even had race day pick-up which adds to the convenience of people who

don’t live in the area. The use of corrals, helped keep the runners where they needed to start, but I did hear a lot of complaints that some faster runners got stuck in slower corrals and I did notice some walkers in the higher corrals, then again with 5,000 people they are bound to make a few mistakes as to who belongs in which corral.

I once again had the privilege of being a pacer and this year I had the 2:20 group. I have to tell you it is huge responsibility when you look behind yourself at mile 8 and see hundreds of people behind you looking at that 2:20 sign!! The race day temps were just a tad warm starting in the high 60’s and finishing in the high 70’s, but the clouds kept the sun at bay

until about the last couple miles of the race. I did my best to stay right on pace and finished just 21 seconds too fast!! The course was marked just a little long at 13.15

This being the 10th year anniversary the medal was the biggest and most colorful ever!! now I may be going out a limb here … like I never do that ☺ but they really need to come up with a way to keep the medals from clanking to-gether!! I just ran over 13 miles and you hand me a scratched up medal!! I mean it looked like it had been dragged on the ground!! Then I listened and heard all this clanking coming from the medal handlers!! It’s not their fault they have 5,000 of those things to hand out. I’m thinking at the factory where the medals are made they need to be covered in plastic or something to keep them from getting all scratched up. Let’s work on this for next year ☺

The post race party was once again el-Lameo for a race with so many people in it and oh yeah it’s sponsored by a restaurant!! at least they stopped cutting the bananas in half!! The beer garden was once again saved the post-race party from being a post-race party pooper!!

I give the Sarasota First Watch half Marathon a 9.5 out of 10, sure they have some work to do on the food … again, but the medal and the beer garden and the race jackets, although blue, were also a nice touch.

the QuiCk 1,2,3 oN uPComiNg raCes:

Mote Turtle 5k run: usually a pretty good race, lameo post race party, but sometimes they have beer☺

Sharks Tooth 10k: Takes place near venice airport, chal-lenging course, good post race party and good awards, a bit pricey for me!

Pine view Python run 5k: Fun race that finishes on the Pine view track.

Pines of Sarasota 5k: Racing series event that runs through the shady Ringling Museum neighborhoods.

See you at the races ☺

the hot sPot - What’s hOt fOr runners

By Nancy Flanagan

last month the wall Street Journal ran an article called “leggings in loud Prints Are a Hit – bye bye basic black”. This was an interesting piece outlining a shift in women’s leggings and capris that I have been noticing the past year in Sarasota. If you are like me, you have been seeing, and perhaps purchasing, more print capris and tights than black or solid color bottoms. Head to a local gym and you will see women in subdued prints or wild print patterns. Go out for a run and you will see women in rainbow prints nearly as often as women in solid black capris. If you ran the Gasparilla events in February (totaling 28,000 participants this year) you found a virtual sea of print shorts, skirts, capris and tights on women of all shapes, sizes and ages. So why are women moving away from basic black and going bold on their workouts?

well, many of us just want something different and more fun. we have been conditioned for years to think that black bottoms are more flattering and that wearing bold colors and/or prints on the bottom just calls attention to problem areas of our figures. That is, it’s better to just wear basic black bottoms and vary your workout wardrobe with prints on top. well, the rules are changing and women are finally realizing that basic black is just that – basic......and boring! why not change up your workout wardrobe as often as you change up your workout? So designers are finally coming forth with fun prints, colors and combinations that not only perk up your bottom half, but also your workout attitude!

Also, the conventional wisdom about prints not being flattering has changed. Actually many women now find that the busier the print, the more flattering it is to the body because the eye follows the movement of the print. Prints also hide flaws and highlight the right areas of our bodies at the same time. The key is to find the print capri in the right, high quality fabric so that it does not looked stretched on the leg.

Another key is to wear the right top with your print bottoms. often a simple, fitted top works well or a looser fitting sleeveless tee is good, too, or just wear a coordinating sports bra if you are more

daring. Finding the right top is just a matter of having fun with the pieces in your workout drawer and doing some experimenting.

So, in deference to feeling good and looking good during a workout, here are a few examples of cool new print capris to consider adding to your workout wardrobe. by adding a couple of these pieces to your capri lineup you just might find yourself putting on the basic black only when the prints are all in the laundry!

The “Dare” Print Capri by MPGPerformance jersey fabric in watercolor

print of blackberry and apple shades with 88% polyester/12% spandex. This piece has a 21” inseam and wide waistband with a shaped back yoke and infinity drawcord at the waist. Reflective MPG logo on the leg.

“infiniti Capri iii” by brooksThis lattice print piece features compression stretch

fabric with a wide flat waistband and a drawcord waist. Includes silicone gripper at the leg opening and a back zip, moisture-proof media pocket and 18” inseam. Storm gray and green lagoon colors.

new balance Printed Capri This new capri has a bold allover colorful sublimated

print. The recycled microfiber polyester fabric has flatlock seams that stretch with you while you work out. Has a plush elastic waistband and gusset that keeps you cool as the months warm up. 19” inseam.

redemption Capri – Skirt Sports This 21” inseam capri has a moisture wicking 87%

polyester blend with 13% spandex jersey and UPF 50+ protection. Has a key pocket in the front waistband and zippered pocket on the back waistband with a hidden continuous drawcord. Slimming design lines come through in this “Escape” print of blues, plums and white.

These fun print capris can all be found at the new Fleet Feet Sarasota location – 711 S. osprey Avenue, next to word of Mouth Restaurant. Get your groove on and Happy Running!
