In the middle of May my husband, Kreg, asked me if we had any free weekends on the horizon. I replied that we only have the Fun Run and Brunch coming up … and that’s it. After that, your weekends are free! He seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. I don’t blame him, it has been a busy spring racing season – the MTC has been involved with 11 events since the beginning of the year.

Now we have our weekends back! BUT our Tuesday nights will be booked with … Summer Beach Runs!

The schedule and a brief description of the events is on the front page of this newsletter. It’s also available on the events calendar on the MTC website. This year, the thing to keep in mind is flexibility (ok, and probably patience, too!). With the ongoing construc-tion at Siesta Beach, we may have to move things around. Also, try to get there a little early, especially in the first few weeks when the runs are packed as parking could be tight. I spoke to Jonathan Poyner (our main man at the county) a week ago, and currently we will be setting up registration in a grassy area at the main concession pavilion. But that could change. The best way to find out what’s going on with a beach run is to check the

MTC facebook page.

I was suprised when I looked at the results from our survey (for a summary of the results see page 8). We have a lot of people that like our page (more than 1,300) but according to the survey 61% never check it out. It’s a great resource to get out last minute info, like when a beach run is canceled due to weather, or to announce impromptu group runs, or to give you the heads up that BBR only has 35 spots left! If you want to be in the loop, like the page: facebook.com/manasotatrackclub

And speaking of Bill’s Beer Run. Registra-tion for MTC members is NOW OPEN!! You should have received an email with registra-

tion details, if you missed it, see the info box on this page for instructions. The theme for this year is “The Hair of the Dog.” We’ll even have a special dog-themed costume contest category! Sorry, actual dogs are not allowed at the event or in the race. So please leave the pups at home.

See ya at the beach!

Budget rePort

The MTC is on very strong financial ground and has been for many years now. The current leadership of the MTC predicts this positive trend should continue. A finance committee consisting of Tom Flanagan, Mariale Ryff, Kim Collister, Chris Deleonardo and Mark Kowalski recently reviewed the club’s cash flow and recom-mended the $63,700 budget (shown below) for 2014 fiscal year.

Last year, due to the incredibly successful 25th Bill’s

Beer Run and increased memberships, we were able to increase our spending on community donations and scholarships and still net a $5700 cash increase.

For 2014, we are budgeting Income and Expenses at the same level budgeted for 2013, but we are planning to draw down our cash reserves, primarily through com-munity donations and scholarships. The Board approved the 2014 Budget and authorized additional scholarships at the May meeting for a total of $12,200 in 2014.

By Guy EaleyMy wife, Valerie Ealey, and I completed the 2014 Dirty Duo as a

coed team. I had done the event every year since its creator, Don Bickel, initiated his version of a “Muddy Buddy” eight or nine years ago. I told Val that much as I enjoy this event, this year would have to be my last. Age and an accumulation of shoulder injuries, has left me with little upper body strength, and the Dirty Duo works the upper body, if you perform all of the components of the event.

Don Bickel developed the course using great creativity, and the plentiful recent rains gave him a great venue to work with, at the Celery Fields. This is an event that requires many volunteers and a lot of work to set up. A big advantage the Celery Fields offers is that NO law enforcement is required for the all off road event! Tony McEachern and his “Team Tony” organization stepped in to do the race promotion and administration of the event. Permit fees for use of the Celery Fields have become an issue, so it looks like a different event site will be sought in future years.

I didn’t see as many familiar faces at the “Duo” this morning. Carl Knutson was there, invited to fill in on a men’s team that had lost one member. Dr. Adam Bright never misses an opportunity to challenge mother nature in off-road competitions. Thierry Rouillard was operating his timing equipment, so the event was

“chip timed”. Harriet van Elburg was there as I had anticipated. Bill Detra did it as a solo runner. Fred Fiala and Tina Pontoni have been a coed team to try to beat every year, and this was no excep-tion, except that Val and I didn’t expect to beat anyone. Dale O’Hara, a former fellow team mate from Team New Balance, was a major part of the organization putting on this year’s Duo.

Here’s how the event unfolded: Men’s teams and solo runners off at 8:00, Coed teams off at 8:05, women’s teams off at 8:10. Three legged sack race about 40 yards out and back, piggy back carry for 50 yards (something I couldn’t ask my shoulder to do), climb a grass trail to the top of “Bickel Mountain,” find your bike. (This is a two person, one bike event). One team member runs while the other starts peddling after finding the team bike, and proceed on the gravel trails atop “Bickel Mountain” to a point about half-way toward the temporary parking lot at the inter-section of Palmer Blvd. and Center Road. Volunteers directed us off the gravel trail, down the grassy hillside to a fence along Center Road. There each team hoisted their bike over the board fence and across a waist deep water filled ditch. One ran, the other biked along Center Road to the intersection of Palmer Blvd. and Center Road, where both crossed back over the ditch and ran/biked along the sidewalk past the construction site for the new Celery Fields structure and parking lot. Each team

FAces At the rAcesdecides where and when to exchange the bike and run duties, but the next challenge is about half way between Center Road and Apex Road. Val and I needed to work together to flip our trac-tor tire six times before proceed-ing along the levee that took us back toward the north and to a point on the west side of Bickel Mountain where a corn hole toss was set up. If a team member was successful at the corn hole obsacle, the team could proceed toward the next obstacle. If not, both team members ran to the top of the hill where we found a park bench dedicated to a young woman who had died at age 18. We had to learn her age to prove we made the climb! Now bike/run to the next obstacle, a bridge railing in the center of the north Celery Field complex, where both team members walked on the water side of the railing, or swam, to the west side of the water channel. Back on the trail to a point where we crossed a section of tall grass and up a levee bank, then down the levee bank and across a center channel of water about chest deep, and up another bank. Drop off the bike, and both team members go back across that chan-nel and then re-cross the channel a third time. Collect the team bike, and run/bike to a north/south levee and proceed north to another channel. Val and I really needed to work together to get the bike across this channel, where the water was just at the top of my head as I shuffled and carried the bike across the twenty foot wide channel. Val needed to get over ahead of me to take the bike and pull it up the bank to an east/west levee. From there, it was a matter of bike/run and trade off, back to the start/finish area, a distance of about a half to three quarters of a mile.

That completed the first loop, and started some of the more spectator area obstacles that help give the muddy buddy (Dirty

Duo) its name. This started by putting each team mate in a coffee sack for the sack hop for maybe twenty yards. Then the wheel barrow for about fifty yards. (Again, something my shoulder wouldn’t handle), where one member is walking on hands while the partner carries that person’s lower extremeties. Next carry a coil of fire hose out ten yards and back, before crawling through a twenty foot long sec-tion of 24” diameter culvert. Out of the culvert, and on to the tire walk (like football players train on),

and climb a small mound of dirt. Next, the team works together to carry a twelve foot 2X12 board around a traffic cone and back to the point of origin, before both crawl through the infamous “mud pit” for about fifteen yards. I managed to do the crawls by sliding on my right side and using my right shoulder to pull myself along. The final element was to run up one side of the slip and slide and then slide down the other side. A second lap followed which was a repeat of what has been described. Then, we got to cross the finish line.

Val and I weren’t really sure we could do the full event, but we were very pleased that we were able to complete the course with the exceptions that I mentioned. We rinsed off at the water tanker, grabbed a slice of pizza, a bagel and a water bottle before col-lecting our bike. We hung around for the brief awards ceremony, knowing that we would not be getting any award. Still, we didn’t go away empty handed. Val won a pricey pair of sunglasses do-nated by Center For Sight. She had filled out a slip for the drawing. Fred Fiala and I received recognition for having completed all of the Muddy Buddy/Dirty Duo events. Incidentally, Fred was clean as a whistle when we stepped forward to accept our recognition. How does he do that!

the hot sPot - What’s hOt fOr runners

By Nancy Flanagan

summer is here and the regular pounding of the feet on hot pave-ment means that paying attention to our socks and our recovery footwear is even more important than ever. my personal pick for

the right sock is the swiftwick compression sock for runners. these socks are manufactured in tennessee and all source materials are from the u.s. this brand was started 6 years ago by an entrepreneur from the cycling industry, mark cleveland. He has brought us a full line of socks from the footie to the knee high and they are knit from a trilobal thread that is extremely moisture-wicking. they use no cotton at all and they do not dye their socks or use chemicals; therefore the swiftwick socks will last longer than other socks. mark’s pledge was to create a company and brand that is high-quality, made in the usa, sustainable, and built to last. If you have ever had a pair of swiftwick socks, you will know that he has achieved his goal! swiftwick socks start at $12.99 and come in a range of colors and styles for runners.

after your run, you will want to get into a pair of recovery sandals to beat the heat. one of the newer recovery sandals out there has a funny name, but it’s effect is anything but funny – it is fantastic! the ooFos sandal is built from oofoam ™ technology and has a patented footbed which provides fabulous impact absorption, comfort and support for hot, tired feet. this technology helps to reduce fatique and enhance the recovery process after a run. some of the advantages of the oo-foam™ materials are:

• added cushioning and natural articulation• 37% more impact absorption

• arch support for most foot type• longer lasting support and cushioning• Durable wear • machine washable

there are 3 styles to choose from – the ooriginal thong for women and men in a variety of colors and sizes @ $39.95, the ooaHH slide for men and women in black and cloud @ $39.95, and the oocloog for women and men in black and plum @ $49.95. try them out and your feet will thank you all summer long.

available locally and at www.swiftwick.com and www.oofos.comnancy is a local runner/mtc member who loves performance apparel with a flare. she is the apparel Buyer for Fleet Feet sports sarasota in southside village. she has expanded the apparel offerings at FFss to now include 16 different women’s and men’s brands ranging from Brooks, nike, adidas, and saucony to lole, lucy, skirtsports and underarmour - and everthing in between for performance running, active lifestyle, yoga, and walking.

rAte the rAcesBy Terry Deshaies

I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organi-zation, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at [email protected].

deSoto 5K:This race takes place along the parade

route just before the DeSoto Heritage Parade. As always there were spectators galore and the smell of barbeques perme-ated the air. You have to be bused from the race finish at the Manatee County School Board building to the start at Manatee High School.

They have this race down to a fine sci-ence. Everything from the busing to the bathrooms to the results all go off without a hitch. All the problems from past years have been dealt with, including the year the sprinklers went off just before the race. Now we start at 6:15 to avoid the 6:30 lawn watering☺.

The course as I said before is the parade route and 2 of the 3 miles is running right down Manatee Ave. Now you never know what you are going to get when you make the turn onto Manatee Ave. Sometimes the wind is at your back and some years you are fighting a head wind all the way to the finish!! This year the wind was at our backs and that is not a great as it sounds. This is our first hot race of the year and with the wind at our backs it was like having a heat lamp on your head all the way to the finish!! They had plenty of water out on the course and at the finish line. I’m not sure about the distance as my Garmin died a couple of weeks ago, but it is the same course as it has been for years, so whatever I said last year works again this year ☺

The awards were plaques for the overalls and 1st thru 3rd got medals with the race graphic on them. They don’t an-nounce the winners. You just check the results board and grab your medal and head to the parade!! They even had all the raffle numbers posted on a board so you could quickly check your race bib.

The post race party was once again awesome!! They had pasta, salad, fruit salad, cheese cubes, potato chips, pretzels and whole bananas ☺ The real party starts when we get to Smitty’s Pub. It has the 3 B’s…Burgers beer and beads!! How can you go wrong with that?☺

I give the Desoto 5k a 9.99 out of 10!! They even changed up the tech shirt design this year…good job The only thing that could have made this race any better is if someone else had ran for me ☺

Run FoR the muSic:This race takes place at Lakewood Ranch

High School and it starts and finishes on the High School track. Now the unique thing about this race was that it was combined with the Girls on the Run 5k. Their race had gotten rained out the previous week so they rescheduled and got together with the Run for Music race people. This made for a run one race and get 2 awards scenario!! Now we are talking my kind of race ☺

The course was a tough cross country race. Like I said, it started on the track and sent us directly into the parking lot and there were more twists and turns than a Chubby Checker song!! Then it was into the grass for about the next 2 miles and finishing

the last ¼ mile on the track. The race was measured a tad short at 3.00, but running through all that grass sure made it seem longer. There were 3 water stops out on the course, an unusual, but welcome sight!! Running through the last water stop I yelled, “Hose me” and one of the volunteers got it and threw a big cup of water on my back as I sped by☺ The only thing missing from the Run for the Music was the music itself!! Instead of Strike up the Band it was more like the Sound of Silence!! First off, I was surprised that the band didn’t play the National Anthem and then there were only 4 small groups out on the course.

The awards for the overalls were tiled plaques and $150 gift cards to Fit2Run and the overall and masters winners from the girls on the race run received nice trophies with the race graphic on them. 1st thru 3rd in each age group also got tiles with the race graphic on them and medals with the Girls Inc. graphic on them. They also read the race times of each per-son, which was a good thing as there were several mistakes and it was a chip timed race!! Good news, only 20 more races and my bathroom will be completely retiled!! ☺

The post race party was very good!! They had pancakes, roast beef sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, sliced oranges, bagels and whole bananas ☺ plus they had a bunch of raffles!

I give the Run for the Music a 9.5 out of 10. Easy parking, lots of restrooms, nice tech shirt and double the awards, that’s enough to make me dance to the music ☺

the QuicK 1,2,3 on uPcoming RaceS:summer Beach Runs: On Siesta Beach, Heat, Humidity and Beer…what a great combination

See you at the races ☺
