An interview with Alan Meyer is like a guided tour of Germany and soon the rest of Europe. Alan and Shirley have travelled extensively throughout Continental Europe, and they will be going back for perhaps their most extensive travels yet, this year. More on that later, after Alan emails their itineraries.

Both Alan and Shirley are retired high school teachers who taught in Willingboro, New Jersey. Alan taught American history, world history, geography, and 6 levels of German on the high school and junior high levels. Shirley taught math on the high school level. Alan organized and took stu-dents on tours of Germany, Austria, Nether-lands, Belgium and France for seven years during spring breaks. That high school was where the famed Olympic sprinter, Carl Lewis attended. Carl’s father and mother, Bill Lewis and Carol Lewis were founders and coaches of the best elementary school age track pro-gram in the state of New Jersey.. Alan Meyer coached freshman baseball and also the distance runners at Willingboro, in addition to his teaching assignments, though he was not a runner himself at that time.

Alan and Shirley moved to Bradenton, Florida in 1997, and in 1998 Alan joined the Bradenton Runners club. He became the President of BRC in 1999, and held that posi-tion until 2006. He took 2007 off, but came back as President in 2008 for another year. Alan also held membership in the MTC much

So sometimes my mouth gets me in trouble. For example, last year I mentioned to Dave Siegwald that I might do the MTC Ultra 25k in 2016. (LOL, I liked the jacket.) Well, Dave remembered those words and toward the end of 2015 he asked me if I had signed up. I couldn’t go back on my word, right. So on December 31st, I signed up ... And then the panic set in! I actually had to do it!

I’ve never run more than a half marathon and the last time I did one of those was a couple of years ago. This was going to be a challenge. My goal would be just to finish.

Some of my friends were training for the Music Half Marathon and I had been joining them on runs, so I guess I was loosely “in train-ing.” And the Music Half worked out to be the perfect long run before my taper. (A taper that I needed since I hurt my foot during the race!)

A big shout out to Kimmi van der Veen! She asked if she could do the Ultra with me – heck yeah! Thank goodness I didn’t have to be out

there alone. We jumped over fire, crossed streams, slogged through the sugar sand and enjoyed fig newtons, girl scout cookies and boiled potatoes together. What a great time we had. Sure we probably could have shaved off a good half hour or more if we ran a little faster and stopped taking pictures but we wouldn’t have had as much fun. Yeah, I said it ... the Ultra was FUN! Maybe I’ll do it again next year ;)

In next month’s newsletter look for Dave’s recap of the race plus photos (maybe even one of me jumping over fire!)

By the way, we have a new race in the MTC/New Balance Racing Series, the Doggy Bones 10k. The event is on Sunday, March 6th. There’s also a 5k, a 1-mile dog run (my Moka is very excited) and various cycling distances. You can even do a reverse brick!

Faces at the races

spine and hips, but he has hopes to return to racing again on a less rigorous racing schedule. These days, Alan spends a couple of hours at the gym three days a week, stretching, and lifting weights. Events that combine running ability and strength ele-ments have been part of Alan’s competitive activity since 2006 when he participated in a “Pump and Run” event. In that event, part of the annual “Flying Pig Marathon and half-marathon in Cincinnati, Ohio, Alan ran a half marathon, and performed mul-tiple “reps” of bench press. The amount of weight assigned for the bench press portion was determined by the participant’s body weight and age. Each bench press repetition deducted a minute from the participant’s run time. Alan finished third in his age group, both in the run time and in the combined run and bench press competition. Alan’s last race was Bill’s Beer Run in 2015, which he considered a disaster. The atrial fibrilla-tion problem forced him to take several walk breaks.

In the last three weeks, Alan has worked to add runs to his exercise program. The street he lives on is a circle, 1.6 miles around. He started with one loop, then added a second, and later a third, totalling almost five miles. That aggressive start triggered a setback, and resulted in having to take more time off from all physical efforts.

Shirley may have to take over managing Alan’s comeback effort. She will need him to be capable of a lot of walking and hiking during the long European tours that, as mentioned, are scheduled for this year. This will be their eighteenth European trip! Their love of travel is something Alan and Shirley have had in common during their 35 year marriage. Shirley has worked as a tax accountant during their life in Florida, until she fully retired two years ago.

Here is where I add the travel agenda Alan provided.

Last year, in 2015, Alan and Shirley shared the following agenda;

May / June Stockholm, Sweden (3 nights); Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg,Russia; Tallinn, Estonia; Gdansk,Poland; Lubeck, Germany; Copenhagen and Aalborg, Denmark; Stavanger, Flam; Bergen and Oslo, Norway (3 nights).

August / September England - Wales trip. London, (5 nights); Bath, (2 nights); Stow - on - Wold, (2 nights); Conwy, Wales (2 nights); Keswick (2 nights); York (6 nights), excursions to Oxford and Greenwich, London (5 nights), among others.

This year, 2016, Alan and Shirley have the following travel planned:

Spring trip: Fly to Milan, Italy, train to Padua (3 nights), train to Venice,(3 nights), train to Trieste, (3 nights). Embark on a two week cruise to: Dubrovnik, Croatia; Athens, Greece; Izmir (Ephesus), Turkey; Heraklion, Crete; Valletta, Malta; Palermo, Sic-ily; Civitavecchia (Rome); Livorno (Cinque Terre) Italy; Marseille (Arles and Aix en Provence), France; Barcelona, Spain.

Summer trip: Fly to Munich, Germany, (3 nights), drive to St. Johann im Pongau, Austria, (7 nights), drive to Mittenwald, Ger-many, (7 nights), drive back to Munich, (2 nights), excursions to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Oberammergau, Fussen, Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace, Zugspitze (Germany’s highest mtn.), Grossglockner (Austria’s highest mtn.), and others.

Anyone feel envious?

rate the racesBy Terry Deshaies

I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organiza-tion, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at [email protected].

ringLing bridge run 4 MiLer: This race takes place on our one and only real Florida hill in Sarasota…the Ringling Bridge…which isn’t even considered a hill to the rest of the country ☺ I arrived just before 6am because I thought there was going to be a parking problem. No problem, I just had to mow down a few dozen orange cones to get to where I wanted to park!! ☺ Turns out. this was not only a good time to get there to get the primo parking spot, but to also get to the jiffy john before the toilet paper runs out!!

At the start of the race there were near perfect weather condi-tions with temps around 60 degrees and very little wind. The course has been the same for the past several years. It’s starts and ends in the Van Wezel parking lot. Then it’s down 41 for about ¾ of a mile then you take a right and head towards the bridge...ugh!! After you get over the bridge you take a hard right and head to the turnaround where they have a clock to let you know how bad you’re doing half way through!! ☺There’s also a water stop there, then you head back up the bridge…ugh Who thought this was a good idea??

The awards were huge trophies for the overalls and a one year membership to the YMCA. Masters and Veterans got trophies with Fit2run gift cards. 1st thru 3rd got medals and Fit2run gift cards 4th thru 6th got colored ribbons with the race graphic on them They also had a couple specialty trophies like Fastest Team, Largest Team and Biggest Slacker…guilty ! ☺

The post race party was okay!! They had Boar’s Head hotdogs with some awesome spicy mustard, muffins, bagels and viscously chopped up bananas!! Oh the humanity!! I had about 27 people come up to me to tell me about the way the bananas were being mistreated!! Thank goodness Culver’s was there with free ice cream to drown my sorrows and btw the Publix towels were deli-cious!! ☺

I give the Ringling Bridge run 4 Miler: 9.80 out of 10, First off the banana treatment can’t be ignored, also most of the race times weren’t announced and we love stat’s…plus it’s the only way we have to make sure that those slower people up on the podium actually beat us!! ☺

tHe QuiCk 1,2,3 on uPCoMing rACes:Sharks Tooth 10k: Takes place at the Venice

Airport, nice awards, good post race party, just get there early to use the jiffy johns!! Trust me!!

Doggie Bones 5K &10K: Takes place at Benderson Park, Haven’t done it in a few years, but it used to have a great post race party

St Patty’s Day 8k: Takes place at Sharky’s in Venice, Great awards, awesome post race party, with green beer!!

Sarasota Half Marathon: Starts at Van Wezel, pretty crappy post race party except for the beer garden, come run with me as I pace

the 2:20 group again this year, a good time was had by the thousands that ran with me

Super Hero 5k: Take place at Benderson Park..have never done this one, can’t imagine why people would want to get dressed up to run a race!!

See you at the races ☺
