ObjectivesStudents will gain knowledge on the cultural and historical backgrounds of mandalas.

Students will demonstrate a grasp of radial design, symmetry, and geometry within their mandalas.

Through self-reflection upon a wish or a goal that they have for their lives, the students will create a mandala that embodies and focuses upon this desire.

What is a Mandala?A mandala is usually an abstract design that is circular in form. Mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Sanskrit is derived from Indian culture.

Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point. From this center point, symbols, shapes and forms are developed in a radial (circular) manner.

Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms. They can also contain recognizable images that carry personal meaning for the artist making them.

Historical Uses of MandalasMandalas can be made out of almost any material, as long as it demonstrate radial qualities. We will use pencil, colored pencils, and sharpies to create ours.

What other materials do you think mandalas could be made out of?

Religious practiceIn religious practice, (Tibetan Buddhism, Navajo) mandalas are made out of sand. These artworks are spent days on in order to create stunningly vibrant and detailed works of art.

After they are created the sand is dispersed by sweeping up the colored sand and dispersing it into flowing water.

The mandala's purpose is to help transform the mind into a more enlightened state.

Focus on an intention, wish, or goal that you have for yourself and your future.

Use these thoughts to help guide your mandala. You may use colors, images, shapes, patterns, words, or symbols to help express these wishes.

Have fun!
