What is a Mandala?

• The word “Mandala” is Sanskrit for circle.– However “Manda” is a palace and “La” is a hidden

presence usually a deity.

• It is a work of art meant to represent wholeness within oneself and with the rest of the universe.– Usually a symbol to view while meditating.

• It is a cosmic symbol that reminds us of the world that extends beyond the physical world.

Where Did the Mandala Come From?

• Buddhist devotional images often deemed as a symbol of an ideal universe.

• Originated in Tibet, India, Nepal, China, Japan, Bhutan, and Indonesia.

• They are now created throughout the world.

Your Assignment

• You will be creating 2 different “Mandala” inspired works of art in Illustrator.

• You will create documents that are 8” x 8”.

• You will use the tips and tricks that we have learned over the past few days in Graphic Design.

– Shape Tool.

• Both Mandalas will be due by 10/25/2017
