B. REASON

(1) HistoryAirbus received a report on an in-service event on A319 aircraft about the loss of theRH side windshield in flight, during the cruise phase. The windshield was the originalfrom delivery, manufactured by SAINT-GOBAIN SULLY SAS (SGS). The investigationof the A319 event determined that both structural plies of the RH windshield weredamaged, due to a continuous arcing in the windshield heating system (at the levelof the power supply wires). Such electrical arcing requires a combination of at leastthe following contributing factors: mechanical damage to the insulation sleeve of thepower supply wires and water ingress resulting in the wires corrosion. Several tens ofseconds after the failure of the 2 structural plies, the last ply failed (outer ply, non-structural) and the windshield was ejected due to the pressurization loads.

(2) Objective/ActionThis Inspection Service Bulletin is published to advise all operators of the A320 familyaircraft of the issue of Ref. SAINT-GOBAIN (F0360) VSB STA320-56-001, which providesinstructions to inspect the front windshields (FINs 3DG1 and 3DG2) potentiallyaffected by water ingress and corrosion within the windshield heating system. TheSGS PNs (all serial numbers) impacted have been defined in 3 groups:Group 1:

(1) HistoryAirbus received a report on an in-service event on A319 aircraft about the loss of theRH side windshield in flight, during the cruise phase. The windshield was the originalfrom delivery, manufactured by SAINT-GOBAIN SULLY SAS (SGS). The investigationof the A319 event determined that both structural plies of the RH windshield weredamaged, due to a continuous arcing in the windshield heating system (at the levelof the power supply wires). Such electrical arcing requires a combination of at leastthe following contributing factors: mechanical damage to the insulation sleeve of thepower supply wires and water ingress resulting in the wires corrosion. Several tens ofseconds after the failure of the 2 structural plies, the last ply failed (outer ply, non-structural) and the windshield was ejected due to the pressurization loads.

(2) Objective/ActionThis Inspection Service Bulletin is published to advise all operators of the A320 familyaircraft of the issue of Ref. SAINT-GOBAIN (F0360) VSB STA320-56-001, which providesinstructions to inspect the front windshields (FINs 3DG1 and 3DG2) potentiallyaffected by water ingress and corrosion within the windshield heating system. TheSGS PNs (all serial numbers) impacted have been defined in 3 groups:Group 1:

CAUTION: ALWAYS OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW TO KEEP ELECTRICALWIRING IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION (ELECTRICALLY AND MECHANICALLYSERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO A MAINTENANCE WORK, REPAIRS ORMODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING, COMPONENTS ANDTHE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO THIS:- PUT PROTECTION, SUCH AS PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHS, ETC., AS

NECESSARY ON WIRING AND COMPONENTS.- REGULARLY REMOVE ALL SHAVINGS, UNWANTED MATERIAL AND

NOTE: The paper ID plate bonded on the internal side of the windshield mustbe used. If the paper ID plate is not available, the metallic ID plate onthe connector must be used.

1 If the PN of the LH side front windshield is STA320-1-7-1:a Do the inspection of the LH side front windshield for Group 1 in

accordance with Ref. Task set A320-A-56-XX-1023-02ZZZ-93BZ-A.2 If the PN of the LH side front windshield is STA320-1-8-2:

a Do a check of the sensor fault history from the date on which thewindshield has been first installed on the aircraft:

NOTE: To ease the review of sensor fault history and records, do acheck if no ECAM warning amber "ANTI ICE L WINDSHIELD(ATA 30-42)". If this ECAM warning is not found in the aircraftmaintenance records, you can consider no sensor faultoccurred.

<1> If fault message "561000 L WINDSHIELD SENSOR" has beenrecorded or if unknown maintenance history:<a> Do the inspection of the LH side front windshield for Group

2, refer to Ref. Task set A320-A-56-XX-1023-03ZZZ-93BZ-A at the compliance time defined in accordance withPLANNING INFORMATION paragraph 1.E.(2).

<2> If fault message "561000 L WINDSHIELD SENSOR" has not beenrecorded:<a> Do a check of the age of the windshield to know if it is

more or less than 4 years or 10000 FC or 15000 FH sincefirst installation on an aircraft.

NOTE: Regarding the definition of windshield ageutilization:- For original windshield installed since the

aircraft delivery: take into account the ageof 4 years from aircraft delivery date

<1> Close the connector in accordance with Ref. SAINT-GOBAIN(F0360) VSB STA320-56-001 and refer to Ref. Task A320-A-56-XX-1023-11ZZZ-311Z-A.

<2> Connect the windshield connector to the aircraft wiring.<3> Fly under MMEL before next flight:
