The Greater New Orleans Region is a metropolitan area designated by the United States Census encompassing eight parishes in the state of Louisiana, centering on the city of New Orleans.

New Orleans was founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company and served as a port for smuggling aid to the rebels in the Revolutionary War. It was then sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It is still a major US port and the largest city in the state of Louisiana. The city is known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture as well as its cross-cultural heritage. It is famous for its cuisine, music (credited as the birthplace of jazz) and annual Mardi Gras festival.

Located in southeastern Louisiana, the city occupies both sides of the Mississippi River. The heart of the city and its French Quarter is on the river’s north side. Because of its placement on the Gulf of Mexico, the city is at risk of hurricanes and tropical storms. New Orleans was catastrophically affected by what Raymond B. Seed called “the worst engineering

disaster in the world since Chernobyl”, when the Federal levee system failed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but has since undergone a massive reconstruction. Now several major tourist events and other forms of revenue have returned, and the Mardi Gras festival was never displaced or canceled.

One of the world’s largest and busiest ports is operated in New Orleans, and this region accounts for a significant portion of the nation’s oil and petroleum production. The port began as a major trading post for the import of slaves, and remains a crucial transportation hub and distribution center for waterborne commerce.

Tourism is another staple of the city’s economy. New Orleans is known for it’s festival calendar, filled with celebrations of food, music and the city’s unique culture. The tourism industry is a $5.5 billion industry that accounts for 40% of the city’s tax revenues. It is home to the annual Mardi Gras festival, the French Quarter, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival commonly known as Jazz Fest.
