Mangal Mandir Jagrati Class Lesson 10 May 1, 2011 Shakti, the feminine power of the Universe, was born as Parvati, the daughter of Himavan the Lord of the mountains. Parvata in Sanskrit means mountain, Parvati translates to “She of the mountains” and is believed to be the personification of the Himalayas. Lord Shiva took to mourning the death of his wife Sati in a cave. In His absence the Asuras gained power and started to threaten the heavens. Parvati would serve Lord Shiva every day in his cave but He never looked at her. Determined, she went to the mountains and performed tapas chanting “Om Nama Shivaya”. This attracted Lord Shiva’s attention and he accepted her as His consort. Their son Skanda (Kartikeya) became the war God and protects the heavens from the Asuras. Consort: Shiva Names: Uma, Kanya Kumari, Kaali, Durga, Mahasakti, Gauri As Durga, Parvati Maa destroyed Mahishasura. As Kaali, she destroyed Raktabeej. Apart from these fearful forms, she is the mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya. She portrays motherhood and love and devotion to her Ishwara.
