MANGERE EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Monday 29th April 2019 A message from our Tumuaki/Principal – Mrs Stephanie Anich Kia ora t ātou te wh ānau We hope that you all got to spend some enjoyable time with your children over the Easter break and that your children are excited about the upcoming term. P ŌWHIRI This morning we welcomed our new students, their families, a new teacher, Mrs.G.R. Geetha Prakasam (middle) and a new Learning Assistant, Ms Regina Hyland-Webster (far right). We also welcomed back Mrs Faasopo Masoe-Ulberg who will be supporting in Room 7. We look forward to learning together with them. GOAL SETTING MEETINGS - Thursday, 9 May, 7:30-8:30 am, 2-5pm and 5:30-7pm . This is a valuable opportunity to meet with your child's teacher to find out how your child is going with their current goals and how you can support them at home. It is also an opportunity to get to know your child's teacher a bit more and to ask any questions you have. Each meeting slot is 15 minutes long and will be held in your child's classroom. Please keep your appointment as this is a long day for our teachers, and make sure you have enough time to get your next meeting so that we can keep to the meeting timetable. If you cannot make it on the 9th, please talk to your child's teacher to make a different time. At the end of last term our 15 strong Year 5 & 6 swimming team had a fantastic day at the MOSA Cluster event and came 4th overall out of 9 teams. We were very proud of our swimmers - their support and enthusiasm for each other was phenomenal. Our boys’ teams did particularly well! Thanks again Mrs Jailabdeen for training our teams, and to whanau for your support on the day. TERM 2 CURRICULUM - This term our curriculum focuses on exploring the question, ‘Is there life out there?’ Children can explore this in many different ways, for example life in their garden, life in the sea to what might exist beyond planet Earth.

  • SCIENCE IN A VAN - tomorrow, Emily & Alan, aka ‘Science in a Van’ are coming to present two Science shows, on for our juniors and one for our seniors. Please send a gold coin as a donation to covering the cost of these shows - the school will cover the rest. So exciting!! Free of charge for families to come and watch at 9:15am.

    PASSION PROJECTS & CULTURAL ELECTIVES This term we are starting with 5 weeks of Passion Projects on a Friday afternoon. We will then go back to Cultural Electives for the last 5 weeks of the term. Most children have already chosen what they want to do. The options are: Band, Basic Māori Weaving, Bikes, BP Technology Challenge, Cartoon Drawing, Chess Club, Coding, Collage, Craft/Art, Embroidery, Environment Team, Folk Dancing, Game Boards/Readers Theatre, Hip Hop, Knitting, Lego, Mahi Poi, Origami, Origami Flowers, Painting, Printmaking, Sing-a-long-Samoan, Toi Ataata & Weaving/Beading.

    NEW EATING TIMES - to help us help the environment by recycling our rubbish, we are changing when and where children eat. Children will now only eat in their classroom supervised by their teacher. The new times are: 9:55am - Brain Food Snack - fruit provided by KidsCan and milk provided by Fonterra. 11:25am - Morning Tea (after play) 1:35am - Lunch (after play)

    DEEJAYS SCHOOL TUCKSHOP - We want to reduce the queues at our tuckshop and the amount of rubbish around our school so we are promoting the Online Ordering System Deejays has for ordering food. Here is our Deejays Tuckshop Menu. Register to order online at www.schoollunches.co.nz. Best to order the night before, but you have up to 9am each morning too.
