1. SUMMARY
MNS University of Agriculture Multan organized a three day Mango Festival at the
Centaurus Mall Islamabad in collaboration with Sardar Group of Companies, wherein
stalls of different varieties of mangoes were displayed. The event was a joint venture of
the The Centaurus Islamabad, MNSUAM Inter University Consortium and 7 Ocean
Association, Islamabad.
The Ambassador of Turkmenistan, Mr. Atadjan Movlamov, the Secretary Narcotics Mr.
Asif Nawaz Khan, the Senior Vice President PGCL Mr. Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, the
Executive Director Higher Education Dr. Arshad Ali and the Vice Chancellor MNSUAM,
Prof. Dr. Asif Ali jointly inaugurated this mango festival on 3rd August along with several
dignitaries. The event was attended by agricultural experts, mango growers and
representatives of export organizations from all over the country. The basic aim of
organizing this exhibition was introducing the diversity of mangoes being grown in
Pakistan and evaluating the marketing potential in high end domestic markets. Such
exhibitions will play an important role in enhancing the productivity, quality and value of
mangoes. The festival was open to general public with special arrangements for families
and kids.
This event provided a valuable opportunity for awareness, branding and networking in
mango production and showcasing the domestic high value marketing opportunity to the
industry. The stakeholders including political leadership, Government Officials,
Ambassadors and Commercial Attaché’s of various countries, academia, researchers,
together with mango growers, traders, exporters, input suppliers and service providers
participated in this event. An overwhelming response of public participation was observed
and witnessed in this first ever unique event of premium quality mango promotion in local
markets. Approximately, more than 60,000 people participated in this festival..
The closing ceremony of the mango festival was held on 5th August. Caretaker Punjab
Minister for Agriculture Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan, Ex-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Iqrar
Ahmed and Senator Rana Mehmood Ul Hassan were the chief guests of the closing
ceremony. Various other political, researchers, social and farmer leads were also
present in the closing ceremony.
Based upon such an overwhelming response and the involvement from the mango
stakeholders, and community, it was decided that the mango festival will be continued
next year and similar promotion of other potential crops e.g. citrus, olives, grapes and
dates etc will also be organized.

2. INTRODUCTION
Pakistan is an agricultural country and production of fruits is an important part of this
sector. Mango is the king of the fruits and one of the most important fruit crop in the
world as well as in the Pakistan. The mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and
Philippines. Mango is a popular, highly nutritive and commercial fruit. It has won the
global title ‘King of Fruits’ due to its excellent flavor, delicious taste and significant
market demand. Its pulp is a rich source of vitamins A and C along with proteins,
sugars, organic acids, ascorbic acid, carbohydrates and minerals.
Pakistan ranks as the 6thlargest of mango producing country in the world. Mango
industry is the second major fruit industry of Pakistan, covering an area of 171.7
thousand hectares with annual production of 1.72 million tones. Over 300 mango
cultivars are grown in Pakistan with Sindhri, S.B. Chaunsa, Dusehri, Anwar Ratole,
Langra, Malda, Fajri, Sufaid Chaunsa, Kala Chaunsa and Rotole-12 being the major
cultivars.
At present, mango industry of Pakistan is passing through a transformation phase
where a shift is being observed from traditional practices to improved practice especially
in export sector both at production and postharvest level. Various interventions have
occurred in the mango industry of Pakistan as a result of awareness, R&D and technical
support rendered to the industry by various national and international projects.
In Pakistan, the fruit is mainly grown in Southern Punjab and Sindh with Multan, Rahim
Yar Khan, Muzafargarh, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Mirpur Khas Hyderabad, Umer Kot,
Sanghar, Tando Allah Yar, Mitiari being key mango growing areas in the country.
Although, several cultivars of mangoes are being grown in Pakistan; but, only a few
have got commercial recognition. Some of the principal varieties of Pakistan include
Sindhri, Samar Bahisht Chaunsa, Sufaid Chaunsa, Langra, Fajri, Malda, Dusehri, Kala
Chaunsa, Anwar Ratole, Late Ratole etc. During the last decade, significant
achievements have been made in developing and exploring several potential mango
varieties. Moreover, an array of commercial mango cultivars from different countries
have also be introduced and multiplied in the country. There is need to showcase the
pool of this potential mango germplasm to the industry stakeholders and the community.

3. THEME AND OBJECTIVES
The theme of the festival was to showcase the diversity, potential and value in mango
sector” with following major objectives:
1. Introducing the diversity of mangoes being grown in Pakistan
2. Evaluating the marketing potential in high end domestic markets
3. Demonstrating the opportunity of high value domestic marketing potential to the
mango farming and trade community
4. INAUGURATION The Ambassador of Turkmenistan, Mr. Atadjan Movlamov, Ambassador of Nepal Miss Sewa Lamsal Adhikari,the Secretary Narcotics Mr. Asif Nawaz Khan, the Senior Vice President PGCL, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, the Executive Director Higher Education Dr. Arshad Ali and the Vice Chacellor MNSUAM, Pro. Dr. Asif Ali jointly inaugurated this mango festival on 3rd August. After the inauguration ceremony, the participants visited the stalls in the festival and acknowledged the efforts.

The mango eating competition was a part of the festivities at the Mango Festival. In
order to conduct this competition, kids were divided into following two age groups;
i) 6-9 years
ii) 10-12 years
Approximately more than 50 kids of various ages have participated in that competition.
Participants attempted to feast upon one mango within the allotted time of one minute.
The winners were awarded with mango box.
6. CLOSING CEREMONY
The closing ceremony of the mango festival held on 5th August. Caretaker Punjab
Minister for Agriculture Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan, Ex-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Iqrar
Ahmed and Senator Rana Mehmood Ul Hassan were the honourable guests of the
closing ceremony.
Prof. Dr. Asif Ali, Vice Chancellor, MNS-UAM, highlighted the importance of organizing
such events and said that the festival has not only introduced local community about the
importance of mango cultivation but has also provided entertainment and fun for
children and families. He said that mango is an identity of this region therefore it is
essential to establish a mango museum in Multan. Information related to mango
varieties and cultivation would be a part of this festival.
On this occasion, Senator Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan, ex-Vice chancellor Prof. Dr. Iqrar
Ahmed and various mango growers, farmers and citizens belonging to all classes were
present.

7. CONCLUSION
Mango Festival at Centaurus Mall 2018 brought the academia, research, Govt. officials
and the mango stakeholders under one roof for the well-being of mango industry of the
country that determines the success of the event. This event should be continued every
year and should be extended to other specialty agro-products being grown in Pakistan.
