C aroline ryba met joseph serpe in november 2010. she was in toronto for the weekend when her best friend invited her to attend a party with some of her new friends from school, which coincidentally
was hosted by Joseph at his best friend’s house. Caroline jokingly admits she wasn’t initially impressed by Joseph’s “loud demeanour and the number of ladies surrounding him,” but he was intent on pursuing her and his persistence paid off when she accepted his invitation to go on a date. Their first date lasted for twelve hours and from that moment forward they were inseparable. Over the course of their four year dating history, Caroline had always wanted to go on a picnic together, and it was always a hot topic of discussion every time the weather warmed up. Their picnic plans were always postponed, which eventually became a long-standing joke between the pair. When Joseph suggested they finally go on a picnic, Caroline was convinced the date would never transpire! However, after a ‘staycation’ weekend that included a spa day at the Miraj Hammam Spa in Toronto, their picnic date finally arrived. With the weather cooperating, Joseph took Caroline to a secluded area of High Park near the water and there, with a basket perfectly composed of Caroline’s favourite things, he asked her to marry him.
When the time came to begin wedding planning, Caroline started the process on her own, but three months into it she realized the task was more than she could handle alone. She connected with Roxy Zapala of art of celebrations event planning and design firm and the two clicked immediately. Roxy provided full-service planning and design services.
A friend of the couple designed a custom family crest that included a fish and snake, which represented the couple’s surnames and was integrated into all of the couple’s wedding stationery, created by Becky Kavanagh of paper & poste.

The couple’s wedding invitation suite
was designed by paper & poste and
drew inspiration from their industrial
reception venue, the fermenting
cellar (part of distillery events).
STYLENOTES The bride wore a Mark Zunino gown purchased from kleinfeld new york. The designer, Mark himself, customized the dress by lifting the waistline, adding pockets, lowering the back, and adding layers of airy silk organza. Her cathedral length veil with a blusher was also custom-made by Mark Zunino.
Looking to add a little extra sparkle, Caroline accessorized her look with a bracelet composed of pear-shaped Swarovski crystals to match her engagement ring, and Dannijo earrings purchased from holt renfrew. She wore ballet flats purchased from chanel in New York.
Her lush bouquet was composed of white roses and calla lilies, which were peeled back to look like leaves. The bridesmaids carried petite white rose bouquets wrapped in gold ribbon.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds and
their guests went outside the church and
released balloons provided by art of
celebrations event planning and design
firm into the sky. This moment held
special meaning for Caroline and Joseph
as they both love balloons and were
eager to share this experience with their
family and friends.
Caroline and Joseph were married on September 12, 2015, at our lady of sorrows catholic church. The altar was flanked by large arrangements of fluffy white blooms and massive natural branches with orchids. The gta strings quartet performed during the ceremony along with the church organist.
In addition to the event planning, Roxy Zapala of art of celebrations event planning and design firm produced all of the floral designs, which were a sentimental priority for Caroline. Her cherished aunt who lived in Sweden adored
flowers and although Caroline shared that love, the wedding flowers became even more important when she learned that her aunt was suffering from cancer and couldn’t make it to the wedding. “This absolutely broke everyone’s hearts; living miles away there was never an occasion that she would miss,” recalls Caroline. With her aunt in mind, Caroline wanted the flowers to be absolutely perfect, and Roxy and her team delivered on that goal. Sadly and poignantly, Caroline’s aunt passed away the morning of the wedding. The beautiful floral wonderland that Roxy and her team created that day was a true homage to her and her life.

ENDNOTES A true family affair, Caroline’s grandmother created the wedding cake, just as she had done for her other grandchildren who have been married. To align with the industrial, raw theme, she kept the buttercream icing to a minimum to create a semi-naked cake filled with sweet berries and a rich vanilla custard, finishing it with white floral and gold leaves for a touch of glam.
A digital photo booth was provided by mango studios as a bonus treat for guests. outside in studios captured the day with cinematography services. In lieu of favours, donations were made in each guest’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society, CAMH, and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
The couple began their dream honeymoon in Hong Kong before flying to Bali and then back to Hong Kong. They bathed with elephants and played with monkeys, and above all else experienced two new cultures—together.
