MANHATTAN SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SPRING 2017 1 MANHATTAN SCHOOL DISTRICT Spring 2017 SUPERINTENDENT SCOTT SPEAKS: Spring Updates 1. Current student population- High School enrollment consists of 237 students; Grades 7 and 8 is made up of 140 stu- dents; and grades K-6 includes 306 students for a total of 683 students. Projected numbers for next year at this current time are about 265 students in the High School; 120 in the Middle School; 310 in the elementary for an estimated count of 695 students. 2. No General Fund Levy Election Requested- We have decided to keep the budgets for the 17-18 school year the same as this year. The board of trustees decided to accept my recommendation and not run school levy election. This is the second year in a row that we have chosen to not ask for any additional taxpayer dollars. In addition, the district was able to cancel our trustee election as two candidates filed for the two open positions. Voters in the Manhattan School district will not be receiving a ballot for the upcoming school elections in May. 3. Building Project- If you have driven by during the last few weeks, you have noticed a lot of dirt work being completed. Piles were created and piles were taken away!! Once the base was all filled and packed correctly, the constructing of the foundation will began. We will see concrete being poured sometime right after the Easter break. The first foundation work will begin in the middle school wing (MSW)and the gymnasium area will be next. To begin with, you will more than likely see the most progress with the MSW. Once the gymnasium foundation is complete, the de- livery and construction of the metal building material will take place. We will also see work on sewer and utilities begin, shortly. I have been asked by a few people what the construction was that happened on the North end of the property. It is sewer line construction Bill Rider had installed to join his trailer park to the city line. As we move closer to the summer break, I want people to know that the entire elementary building, including the gymnasi- um will be shut down over the entire summer. Due to the liability risks, we will have no staff or students in the building while construction goes on in that building. They will be working on kitchen changes and replacing windows and the out- side wall on the primary wing. A reminder also that nobody is allowed in the fenced off area unless they have checked in at the trailer. As production in- creases, we will be offering tours at times for people to witness the progress. 4. Softball and Wrestling- There have been some really strong momentum driving the idea of adding both Softball and Wrestling. With the strong numbers trying out for our sports teams, I do believe the addition of these two sports would pro- vide more opportunities for our students. While we are still trying to put the details of this proposal together, the energy from a large number of parents has been appreciated. We should know in May or June if this will be a go or not for the next school year. 5. Retirements- I would like to thank Teresa Oldenburger (5th grade teacher), Jane McCarthur (special education paraprofessional), and Vickie Westervelt (custodian) for their service to the district. All three ladies are choosing to retire at the end of the school year. I greatly appreciate their commitment over the years to the district and wish them all the best. A lot is happening in the district. It is a great time to be a Manhattan Tiger! Please don t hesitate to contact me by email or stop in for a visit if you have questions or concerns. You can email me at [email protected]. As we finish the school year, I look forward to seeing you at the concerts and events. Roll On Tigers, Scott Chauvet

MANHATTAN SCHOOL DISTRICT Spring 2017

SUPERINTENDENT SCOTT SPEAKS: Spring Updates

1. Current student population- High School enrollment consists of 237 students; Grades 7 and 8 is made up of 140 stu-

dents; and grades K-6 includes 306 students for a total of 683 students. Projected numbers for next year at this current time

are about 265 students in the High School; 120 in the Middle School; 310 in the elementary for an estimated count of 695

students.

2. No General Fund Levy Election Requested- We have decided to keep the budgets for the 17-18 school year the

same as this year. The board of trustees decided to accept my recommendation and not run school levy election. This is the

second year in a row that we have chosen to not ask for any additional taxpayer dollars. In addition, the district was able to

cancel our trustee election as two candidates filed for the two open positions. Voters in the Manhattan School district will

not be receiving a ballot for the upcoming school elections in May.

3. Building Project- If you have driven by during the last few weeks, you have noticed a lot of dirt work being completed.

Piles were created and piles were taken away!! Once the base was all filled and packed correctly, the constructing of the

foundation will began. We will see concrete being poured sometime right after the Easter break.

The first foundation work will begin in the middle school wing (MSW)and the gymnasium area will be next. To begin

with, you will more than likely see the most progress with the MSW. Once the gymnasium foundation is complete, the de-

livery and construction of the metal building material will take place.

We will also see work on sewer and utilities begin, shortly. I have been asked by a few people what the construction was

that happened on the North end of the property. It is sewer line construction Bill Rider had installed to join his trailer park

to the city line.

As we move closer to the summer break, I want people to know that the entire elementary building, including the gymnasi-

um will be shut down over the entire summer. Due to the liability risks, we will have no staff or students in the building

while construction goes on in that building. They will be working on kitchen changes and replacing windows and the out-

side wall on the primary wing.

A reminder also that nobody is allowed in the fenced off area unless they have checked in at the trailer. As production in-

creases, we will be offering tours at times for people to witness the progress.

4. Softball and Wrestling- There have been some really strong momentum driving the idea of adding both Softball and

Wrestling. With the strong numbers trying out for our sports teams, I do believe the addition of these two sports would pro-

vide more opportunities for our students. While we are still trying to put the details of this proposal together, the energy

from a large number of parents has been appreciated. We should know in May or June if this will be a go or not for the next

school year.

5. Retirements- I would like to thank Teresa Oldenburger (5th grade teacher), Jane McCarthur (special education

paraprofessional), and Vickie Westervelt (custodian) for their service to the district. All three ladies are choosing to retire at

the end of the school year. I greatly appreciate their commitment over the years to the district and wish them all the best.

A lot is happening in the district. It is a great time to be a Manhattan Tiger! Please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or stop in

for a visit if you have questions or concerns. You can email me at [email protected]. As we finish the school year, I look

forward to seeing you at the concerts and events.

The Manhattan High School’s Tiger Beat is sched-uled for April 28. All classes attend the rehearsal performances. This is a fun day for the K – 8 stu-dents as they have the opportunity to watch the high school students perform and some of them, begin to aspire to be up on that stage when they are in high school!

Missoula Children’s Theater week is May 1 through May 5. The performances are scheduled for May 5. More information regarding the performances will be coming home at a later date.

Our Smarter Balance testing should be completed or near completion by May 12. We will be doing make up tests during the week of May 15 - 19 and hopefully we can get all students in grades 3 – 8 tested by May 19.

Kindergarten promotion exercises and the elemen-tary awards program are tentatively planned for

Tuesday, June 6. The ceremony will begin at 9:00 A.M. and should conclude by 9:30. We will have a break from 9:30 to 10:00 and then begin the Elemen-tary Awards Assembly at 10:00. The elementary track meet is tentatively scheduled for June 7. Par-ents are cordially invited to attend the track meet and to have lunch with their children on June 7. Please be aware that we may change the format and/or the date of the track meet as our numbers have in-creased and we are seeking ways of running it more efficiently. If we come up with a “better plan,” parents will be notified as soon as possible.

Times and dates are still being worked out for the Junior High Awards Assembly. This information will be coming out at a later date.

If you have a child. who is eligible for kindergarten in August of 2017 and you plan to send that child to kin-dergarten, please contact the school as soon as pos-sible so we can place them in a class.

As the year draws to a close, please be extra cau-tious when driving in the vicinity of the school. With the increased volume of traffic in and around the school, the possibility of having an accident greatly increases. Your vigilance is greatly appreciated!

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at the year-end activities!
