Julia received a BA in advertising with a minor in fashion merchandising
from Howard University where she assisted in everything from
managing wardrobes for homecoming fashion shows to assisting
wardrobes at a Saks Fifth Avenue breast cancer benefit. After
graduation, Julia took her fashion talents across the pond to London,
England, where she studied fashion & styling at the London College of
fashion. There, Julia combined the latest American trends with
European flair, & developed herself as an emerging and flourishing
stylist.
Having held retail, visual merchandising and personal shopping
positions at Nordstrom & Neiman Marcus, Julia has gained experience
dressing elite clientele in cutting edge creations from top designers.
Experience includes: assisting in styling photo shoots for national retail
campaigns for Sean John clothing company as a visual merchandiser &
assisting styling for baby-g watches national ad campaign.
In 2007, Julia started her own company, Simone Vivian, LLC with a client
base of celebrities, socialites and every day glam girls. Julia travels the
U.S. to provide her clients with image and styling services for red carpet
events, parties, photo shoots, etc. her extensive fashion knowledge &
sparkling personality made her perfect to present fashion tips on San
Diego living morning show and good morning Arizona as a guest fashion
expert.
In 2010, Julia added author to her resume when she published, Mani
Pedi success is defined by you, a guide for college students and recent
graduates who are facing uncertainty upon graduation; prepping them
for real life experiences.
Now wife & super fab mom to a ball of energy toddler, Julia takes on
multiple projects understanding the need of perfect style solutions for
the fashion obsessed or the merely curious. Julia is a member of delta
sigma theta sorority, Inc. & resides in Washington, DC with her husband
and son.
Question & Answer…
1. What inspired you to write the book?
My inspiration came from my experiences.
After I graduated from college, I wasn’t
receiving job offers right away & began
comparing myself to other peers who
graduated at the same time as me, but were
having better luck in the job search. It was
then I decided to focus on what I love, which is fashion; Friends of
mine who were in the same boat as I was felt completely
unprepared for life after graduation. I wrote this book for recent
graduates & college students to let them know that a college
education doesn’t necessarily mean your dream job is right there
waiting for you. Instant success doesn’t come right away after
graduation for all,
2. How do you feel this book can be inspiring to others?
The rule book that society has set up for us in terms of education &
career goals don’t necessarily apply to or work for everyone. You can
write & follow your own rule book for how you want to live your life,
and you can also achieve & define your own type of success. You define
your own success, not society. This book is meant to uplift people in
their spirits & let them know they should not feel down on themselves
if everything isn’t going exactly as planned. Real success stories take
time.
3. Where did the title Mani Pedi come from?
A manicure, pedicure was something that I liked to have done when I
was under a lot of stress. Even though I wasn’t able to afford the more
expensive salon services like facials or massages, I could always go out
& get a mani pedi! Or even do one on my own. I titled it after my stress
reliever. The second part of the title Success Is Defined by You is my
way of telling young people, you define your own success. If you’re
happy living one way there is no need to go out & try to live like
someone else or compare your life to theirs.
4. What advice would you offer to others who have found
themselves in a similar situation to the one you found yourself
in?
Get a mentor in the field you want to work in, and try to take alternate
paths; it’s ok to do things differently than others around you even if
you’re working towards the same goal. Take the path less traveled.
After having a mentor, make sure to seek out internships, & when the
time comes for you to finally seek out your first job don’t feel
discouraged if it isn’t what you want to do for the rest of your life.
There is a difference between a job & a career. Even though this is true,
still do your job 100% because you never know how that can affect your
career later. Give every step in your life 110% because all of the smaller
parts of your life such as, what you have done or may be doing now are
pieces of the larger picture of your life.
5. With all the other self-help books out there, what sets yours
apart from others & makes it special?
Mani Pedi: Success Is Defined by You was written when I was 25, & a lot
of the other self-help books that I’ve read & seen are produced by
much older individuals. What happens is you hear a lot of “it will
happen” & “don’t worry” in these books, & it is so much harder to
relate to what they are saying because they are in a completely
different place in their lives. They have already obtained or established
their success. I felt that writing my book at my age would allow the
reader to connect with me more because I understand their views &
their situation more, & I know what they are feeling & have to say
matters.
So I know you’re thinking this book is wonderful, amazing, interesting,
