Earlier this year Big Beat Bronsonwas officially launched into thestratosphere. Members Baron VonAlias and MistaBreeze had beenworking together for over a yearalready, receiving a lot of attention in2011 when they were voted the bestact at the Evolution Festival, which ledto them being asked to play a slot onthe BBC Introducing stage at RadioOne’s Big Weekend. When ElizaLawson collaborated on the tracksOverload and Action Man, as well asbecoming a regular fixture in the liveshow, it made sense to formalize thetrio under a new name. BBB, who areoften likened to the Beastie Boys, released their debut E.P, May ContainNuts, on 6th August, which theyofficially launched at a sell out showat Newcastle’s O2 Academy on 18th.

According to the Baron, recordingMCN “was really easy because wehave all known each other for a longtime and have a really good rapport soit all just came together.” MistaBreezeadded “I think there is definitely asound that is recognizable as BBB.We are always evolving and tryingnew things out and our producer reallymanaged to take what we do best asindividuals and put it all together in away that splits genres and keeps usfrom being pigeon holed.”

Big Beat Bronson will join a host ofother North East acts at this year’sSplit Parade on September 15th. InEliza’s words; “it’s great to beincluded! I think it shows thatwhoever is picking the line up can seewhat it is we are trying toachieve...it's bloody marvellous!” AsMistaBreeze noted, “it’s good that weare the only Hip Hop act on as itmeans we will be remembered.”

“In the North East the 'hip hop' labelis something that other acts in thegenre are not keen to share with

BBB,” remarksEliza. “I actuallythink there arepeople in thescene here thatdon’t like us to beclassed in the same‘hip hop’ genre asthem due to the factthat what we do islargely comedic, uses abroad spectrum ofmusical influences andhas a more commerciallyappealing sound; we aren’t‘underground’ enough.” “We are taking it to the nextlevel with music videos, promotion, gigs, production, quality of the music and theamount of work that goes intoit,” adds MistaBreeze. “This isn’ta hobby, it’s our job.”

BBB weren’t giving much away withregards to we should expect at Split, but promised “much like all of ourshows, we like to keep it fresh. Therehave been some ideas but we can’t tellyou anything...It would just spoil it!”

Post-Split, the BBB gang have somebig plans; “We are embarking upon anintergalactic tour, hitting hotspotssuch as Uranus and givingOrion’s belt a goodwhipping and finishingoff with a good portionof the Milky Way,” saysBaron. “In between weshall be hitting largecities in the UK. Keep anear to the ground for thesounds of us pulsating ourway across the universerounding off by tearing thisgalaxy a new worm hole.”

Words ANDREW OPENSHAW

Following a sold-out EP launch at the O2 Academy, Baron Von Alias, MistaBreeze & ElizaLawson AKA Big Beat Bronson prepare to bring their unique brand of hip-hop dress-up to TheLittle Room into the wee hours of Split Parade.

THIS MONTH 10

What are you listening to atthe moment?

Presently, I am revisiting a couple ofold favourite albums; Beth Gibbonsand Rustin Man Out of Season, aquality crafted collection ofcompositions as a unique sideproject from the Portishead singer.Plus Stina Nordenstam's 1998 albumPeople are Strange, in my mind, oneof the best covers albums evercreated. I was inspired recently torevisit it due to the recent influx ofmodern bands/singers doing coverversions and being disappointed bysome of the rather uninspiringresults. I've always personallybelieved, if you are going to recordand release a cover version ofsomething then you must strive to putyour own unique stamp upon it or theparticular journey is rather pointless.

I'm also listening to the latestreleases by; Ane Brun - It All StartsWith One and, Emily Barker & TheRed Clay Halo - Almanac. Twoparticularly well-crafted albums ofrecent releases, Ane Brun is aparticularly fine singer andsongwriter from Scandinavia, with anaddictive track on the new albumcalled Do You Remember. EmilyBarker & The Red Clay Halo, I wasintroduced to them through a gig theyperformed recently at Old CinemaLaunderette in Durham, it was a veryfine gig with luscious vocalharmonies and strings in sweet well-crafted songs. Plus, only justrecently, the quality heartwarmingScottish singer/songwriter IvanDrever, released his new album Keepon Keeping On, I await with joy tohear that new album.

Parallel to my music revisits andrecent releases, I'm listening a lot

to new recordings and music oflocal bands; WATCHERS,Parastatic, Lilliput, Bridie Jacksonand the Arbour - Bitter Lullabies,Skylark Song and, more recently,Rob Heron and the Tea PadOrchestra, who release in Octobertheir first album called Money Isn'tEverything. I've enjoyed the greatpleasure of working a lot asphotographer for all these greatbands and in particular Rob Heronand the Tea Pad Orchestra at theirgigs and events. A great band Ihighly recommend checking out.

What are you reading? At the moment, I am reading twobooks; Franco by Paul Preston and,Charlotte Street by Danny Wallace. Itend to always have two books onthe go at one time because, myreading moments will alwaysdepend upon my free time aroundmy workload so, one book will be alight read and the other a more in-depth read in this case, the DannyWallace is a nice light read and theauthors first novel and, the historicalwork about Franco by Paul Prestonis a more intense read for those dayswhen I take a day off work and enjoya full day of reading and relaxation.

What are you watching? As I don't own a TV, haven't donefor years, I read the news websiteson a daily basis, watch gigs and ArtHouse films at the Tyneside Cinema, last one being the fantastic TheArtist, and, when I get chance andbeing someone who is passionateabout the outdoors and countryside, whenever I can, I watch beautifulsunrise and sunsets.

What gigs are you going to?Having been given the wonderfulopportunity this year to be thesummer event/gig photographer forthe fantastic Cumberland Arms inNewcastle, I've been enjoyingmany quality gigs there whilephotographing the performancesand atmosphere. Namely recently,I've enjoyed some great gigs andperformances by; Warm Digits, TheCornshed Sisters, Skylark Song, TheKentucky Cowtippers, Rob Heronand the Tea Pad Orchestra, TheBaghdaddies, Holy Moly and theCrackers. Plus, the most recentquality LONE WOLF gig I attendedhad; WATCHERS, Parastatic andWarning! It was a particularly goodevening of great performances anda line-up that really complimentedeach other. I recommend to anyoneall the bands I have seen performrecently and if you want to seeimages of the talent on stage, checkout my Facebook page SpuriousNonsense Art Photography.

Jonathan will be presentingperformances by Ivan Drever,at Cumberland Arms, Newcastleon October 4th, and WestgarthSocial Club, Middlesbrough onOctober 6th.

SPOTLIGHT ON 1212

FATHOMS“A mechanised maelstrom of guitar anddrum thunder."That's how the dark metal ooze of Newcastle'sFathoms has been recently described. Sound like yoursort of bag? Sandwiched between Nately's Whore'sKid Sister and Acrobatic Society on the Kittle PRPresents stage, Fathoms will be bringing theirmythology-steeped noise to the ears of Split Parade.

Formed in 2012, and lead by Swedish folk singerNathalie Stern, Fathoms have so far shared the stagewith heavy-hitters like That Fucking Tank, Humanfly,VOM, Grace, Nately’s Whore's Kid Sister, We AreKnuckledragger, Richard Dawson and Tide of Iron.

Taking their cues from the murkier end of the scope,Fathoms stir up an alchemic mix of classic rockharmonies, pulverising riffs and roaring rhythms.Inspired by space, fantasy art and magic, Parade-goers can expect old school thrash-outs, theatrics andpossibly a cape or two.

Tagged as one to watch by UK Metal Underground, who dubbed them “dark sludge metal sniffin' lines ofhardcore, black metal and galactic wind," Fathoms arecurrently warming back up to the live scene after theirdrummer broke his arm. Recent appearances atNARCFest and gigs around the country have paved theway for the band's upcoming EP, for which they'recurrently writing new material. “We're looking forwardto being part of Split Parade, and playing with ourfriends Nately's Whore's Kid Sister is always apleasure,” they say.

Catch Fathoms on the Kittle PR Presents stage atPlugged Inn.

THE SONSOF BIDO LITOLike a bit of swagger with your indie-rock?Fancy some dusty psychedelic tunes to twist to thisParade? Then get yourself down to the MMBE Presentsstage at The Little Room, Independent to catch The Sons ofBido Lito. If they can tear themselves away from YouTubethat is. “The Bidos have been quite busy recently,” theysay, “writing new stuff and recording two tracks for ourfirst EP, which we hope to have out later in the year. We'vealso been laughing at some old Oliver Reed interviews.”

“Our first EP is the main focus for the future, as wewant something physical for people to have asopposed to data streamed through cables. We aretechnologically simple men and prefer to put a recordon rather than log into a hard drive. There are somelocal gigs coming up; as well as Split Parade, we'resupporting a great band called The Wicked Whispersat The Cluny on the 18th of October.”

So what can punters expect from The Bidos this year?“We're not really the type of band who will havegimmicks like a glitter cannon or whatever, we'll beflying through the set as fast as possible. As gig-goersourselves we find it cringe-worthy when you comeacross a singer who starts talking about what he's hadfor his tea, or telling you that the next song is about himcrying in the dole queue or whatever. We just want tohear them play so we are going to do what we wouldlike if we were in the audience.”

Are you looking forward toreturning to Sunderland forSplit Parade?

Aye we had a class time at PluggedInn a few months back, we beatRoss from The Futureheads out ofthe traffic lights on the way home sohopefully there’ll be more of thesame this time round.

You’ve not played much inSunderland so far, what canParade-goers who’ve notexperienced NWKS expectfrom your set?

Fully grown men playing half arsedshit riffs whilst struggling withbalance, timing and hygiene. Eachhas their own identity, much like thespice women.

Will you be treating us tosome of your newDeath/Gomez-esque newmaterial?

We don’t actually like death orGomez any more, the new stuff ismore living and Shed 7 inspired.

You’ve become infamous foryour unique visual aestheticon stage; have you gotanything special lined up forthe gig?

Big projections of Niall Quinn goalsand Peter Reid masks.

Who else will you be lookingto catch at Split Parade, aside from your best buddiesFathoms?

REVIEWS: LIVE 19www.manifestosunderland.com

With so many festivals clawing forthe best and most well-knownbands, smaller festivals oftenplace emphasis on the overallexperience rather than relying ona wall-to-wall smattering of big-hitters. While boasting the likes ofWe Are Scientists, Maxïmo Park,Feeder, Dizzee Rascal, The View, and James, the bulk of the bill wasmade up of up-and-comers andrelative unknowns, offering theopportunity both for theunearthing of new treasures or arelaxing plan-free day in thefields.

Being just 90 minutes up the road,it’s an ideal event for musos of theNorth East; they even borrowed afair few of our top acts. Wecaught a handful of local artistsdoing us proud over the weekend.Little Comets bounded around thepacked-out Calling Out stage, rousing a sleepy early-eveningaudience into rampant shape-throwers.

Vinyl Jacket’s keyboardistscooped the award for mostenergetic performance of theweekend, leaping around like ademented wallaby (if he slept in atent the night before that, I’ll eatmy hat. Or preferably whatever hehad for breakfast).

B>E>A>K went walk-abouts onthe House Party Stage, winningover baffled punters with theirexuberant brass-beats. (Check outour Gotcha page to see the WhiteSwan giving Kendal’s health andsafety officers an aneurism.)Closing the Friday night, MaximoPark whizzed through a set ofclassics and well-placed newmaterial with boundlessenthusiasm and charisma, ensuring the first night closes witha bang, despite the damp weather.

You can’t move for small festivals in this country these days.Variety, as they say, is the spice of life, and with peoplebeginning to leak away from the larger festivals in dribs anddrabs, music lovers have a near endless choice of events topitch their tent at. The Lake District’s Kendal Calling is justone of these fledgling festies competing for punters, but it iscertainly well worth your time.
