Mano Annual Walkathon is on next week This annual event will take place on Wednesday 1st November and provides an opportunity for all students to participate in a whole school community event. We thank all sponsors who will be supporting this event and the parent helpers who will contribute to making it possible. In previous years the Walkathon has raised quite a profit for the school, making additional resources available to our students to use both in and out of the classroom environment. Students are encouraged to wear bright coloured clothing (maybe fluro) on the day.

VCOP and the ‘Big Write’ Students across all year levels are developing capacities to incorporate aspects of VCOP into their writing tasks – Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation. Ask your children about VCOP and how it helps them to think about their writing! Each fortnight we will be embracing a VCOP writing strategy referred to as the ‘Big Write’. These sessions will create an environment for students to create thoughtful pieces of their best writing – by thinking about the topic the day and night before, using VCOP components and having a classroom environment which supports creative and thoughtful writing.

Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers Many thanks again to all Mano community members who collected these recently – they translated into almost 22,000 points for us to convert into classroom resources and sporting equipment. An order has been placed and we hope to receive these resources by the end of Term 1 2018.

Halloween Picnic – Tuesday 31st October On Tuesday 31st October an enthusiastic group of parents are arranging a special event for our students from 5 - 7 p.m. Students attending will need to be supervised by their parents at all times during this event. Thank you to the organisers and those who have been donating ‘treats’ in preparation of this Halloween event.

Melbourne Cup day – Tuesday 7th November This is NOT a Pupil Free Day. On this day (referred to as Mano Cup day) we will be asking students to dress in a related way – in their ‘finest glam’, as a jockey, a horse or something else similar. There will be a ‘fashion parade’ at 9.15 am and weather permitting a picnic lunch to be enjoyed by all on the oval. Karina (Canteen Manageress) is planning some special lunch order menu items for this day – see attached menu. This day has been planned by our enthusiastic student leaders from the senior team.

Music Count Us In – Thursday 2nd November at 12.30 p.m. On this day at this time right across Australia, over half a million students will be singing a song together. This celebrates music education in schools and will be live streamed from Federation Square, Melbourne. The song this year is ‘Shine Together’, as the joy of making music together is celebrated right across our nation. For more details refer to: http://musicaustralia.org.au/program/countusin/

Building project update Our builders are currently working on the 3 Junior rooms in the southern end of the Junior / Admin building. Painters and carpenters are currently addressing refurbishment plans and on Wednesday 25th October (Pupil Free Day for Geelong Cup) a small quantity of asbestos was removed by qualified staff. Plumbers will soon be replacing guttering and downpipes. New furniture throughout this building should be able to be purchased via this project. The classes which have been temporarily relocated to the multi will need support as the hot weather approaches – any assistance with fans or portable air conditioners would be appreciated as we plan for this need in the coming weeks. See photos below of their progress to date.

Swimming program for Preps and Juniors next month

From Monday 20th November to Friday 1st December, our Preps

and Juniors will be participating in an intensive swimming program

at the Geelong College pool. Parents are welcome to attend

swimming sessions but will be unable to travel on the bus due to

limited seating capacity.

We will be encouraging our students to develop both their water

skills and independence, as it relates to changing after sessions

and looking after their possessions.

Walkathon - Wednesday 1st November Hoping all of us are doing our best to get sponsors to raise money for our school. All you need is to ask family members, friends, neighbours and familiar faces to sponsor you. Prizes will be awarded to those who raise the most! Just remember the more sponsors and money raised for our 5km walk, the better upgrades we will have at school for our classrooms and/or playgrounds! If you need another sponsorship form, please see Jacquie in the office. All sponsorship forms with money need to be given to your classroom teacher or the General Office directly by Wednesday 8th November. This year our aim is to raise $1 for each 1km walked for every student. If everyone meets this aim we will raise close to $2,000 of funds that can be spent on the continual upgrade of our play-grounds. Thanks to those parents who have put their name down to be parent helpers on the day. I’ll be in touch soon to assign duties for the day. Please remember full school uniform is to be worn on the day with some added fluro flair. Thanks. Mr Hambrook

Halloween Picnic Dinner Tuesday 31st October, 5 - 7 pm, Middle Terrace Mano families are invited to BYO picnic/take away dinner for Halloween. There will be trick or treating stations and a Halloween disco. If you are thinking of coming along a donation of individually wrapped treats for the trick or treating would be appreciated. There is a collection box at the General Office. This is a School Council Wellbeing Subcommittee event, families are responsible for their own children as NO teacher supervision will be provided. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.

Chaplain's Corner Welcome to Term 4 and the wonderful weather!

I hope you have had a positive start to the term. One initiative at Mano to help students have a

positive and calm start to the school week is the M&M (Milo & Mindfulness) Club.

The M&M Club provides companionship, a relaxing and safe environment as well as non-stressful

school start. M&M Club starts around 8:30am, in the circle area between Prep and Library, with a

Milo and then moves to a Mindfulness circle about 8:40am.

Students are then offered to get some fresh air at 8:50am, or they can remain for a further 5

minutes of mindfulness until first bell.

Milo is a great start to any day! Also, Mindfulness helps us look after our mind, and build mental health and wellbeing, through

positive interactions, activities, exercises and environment. Thus M&M Club is a great spot for drop off and helps everyone

prepare themselves mentally & emotionally for their big week at school.

Thanks and remember M&M club, Mondays & Tuesdays at 8:30am onwards in the Prep/Library Building.

If you don’t have a valid Working with Children Check please apply by following the instructions attached to this newsletter. There is no cost for a Volunteer Working with Children Check (a passport photo is required). Please ask at the General Office if you need a hand – we look forward to seeing our students continue to benefit from the amazing work that parents do as volunteers at our school. Please check with your local post office if they process Working with Children checks.

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Win a family adventure holiday at Tokyo Disneyland! This year, School Banking is running a Future Savers Grand Prize competition that will take one lucky School Banker all the way to Tokyo, Japan. The winner gets an unforgettable family trip, for up to two adults and three children, where they ’ll explore Tokyo Disneyland with its amazing attractions, including the futuristic Tomorrowland, plus enjoy the fun rides at Tokyo DisneySea. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

Manifold Heights PS Week beginning 23rd October 2017

Coordinator: Kamaljit Kaur

Hi Everyone

It has been a great third week of the term at OSHC. We are enjoying the sun outside by playing football and other group games.

Jacob and Max played with Lego. Luka and Cooper enjoyed the board game Monopoly. Kate and Emily made bracelets out of wool.

Children are painting Halloween monsters. Astrid, Vivian, Zara, Maliha, Emily and Matilda made the scary monster masks using

paper plates. Hayden and Jack played with building blocks. Raiden and Lucas played with toy cars. Bradley and Alex enjoyed

playing with hamabeads. Juliet, Max, Sai, Jacob, Koji and Vivian enjoyed Bobs and Statues. There was a lot of fun.

I would like to thank all the children and families attending OSHC club. I would like to wish you all the best for term 4.

Reminder: Camp Australia Cancellation Process
