FILIPINO JINS WIN FILIPINO JINS WIN FILIPINO JINS WIN WORLD POOMSAE TITLEWORLD POOMSAE TITLEWORLD POOMSAE TITLE

The mood was light when brothers Jean Pierre and Brian Sabido and their teammate Anthony Matias prepared for their photo shoot. Clad in their white poomsae uniforms, the young athletes playfully made fun at each other as

they practiced different taekwondo forms before demonstrating it in front of the camera.

It was an entirely different atmosphere on that same gym a few months ago. Back in September, the three athletes were spending almost the entire day from Mondays to Fridays perfecting their routines for the then upcoming 5th World Poomsae Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

It was like boot camp, recalled the older Sabido, Jean Pierre, a native of General Santos City.We spent two months training seven to eight hours

  • >NAKAKAPAGOD, BUT IT TESTED OUR DETERMINATION. HOW FAR ARE WE WILLING TO ENDURE PAIN IN ORDER TO WIN FOR THE COUNTRY? WE WERE PRESSURED TO DELIVER, -- Anthony Matias

reaped the fruits of their labors last October when they bested powerhouse teams from Germany, Iran and China for the first team event gold medal in the world championships.

Participated in by 446 athletes from 59 countries around the globe, the victory was sweet for the Jean Pierre, Brian and Anthony who could only finish sixth place last year.

The trio also surpassed their bronze-medal feat in 2008.It is definitely the highlight of our career so far, Jean Pierre

says. Last year was an eye-opener. After winning bronze in the world championships in 2008, we got cocky. Hindi kami halos nagti-training together. Kaya yung performance level namin, bumaba.

Indeed, the squad suffered misfortunes in 2009, slipping to sixth place at the world championships and stumbling into third at the Laos Southeast Asian Games.

It was frustrating, Brian admits. We sacrificed a lot of things, but we didnt get the results we wanted.

Aside from being away from their families, the three also gave up something to hone their craft.

Jean Pierre quit as an exercise consultant, Brian took a leave of absence from work as a landscape architect, and Anthony missed classes as a graduating high school student.

Hindi rin naging madali sa akin, says Anthony, 17, now a college freshman at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.Kahit na approved ng parents ko yung pagiging member ko

ng national team, hindi ko rin kailangang pabayaan yung school work ko.

The three athletes vowed to train harder after those painful losses last year. Aside from training under a Korean coach, the trio also joined the Philippine taekwondo team to Korea for a few weeks.

Nakakapagod, but it tested our determination. How far are we willing to endure pain in order to win for the country? We were pressured to deliver, Brian said.

Gusto kong manalo kami pagkatapos nung nangyari sa amin last year, Anthony added.

The journey, indeed, was long and bumpy for Jean Pierre, Brian and Anthony, but

With poomsae not included in the November Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, the trio currently enjoys light training for now in preparation for their title-retention bid in the world championships in Russia on

a date yet to be announced, as well as the Southeast Asian Games in

    Indonesia late next year.Defending

our title at the world championships is very hard. Kaya

kung nahirapan kami sa training this year, doble or triple pa siguro ng hirap ang dadanasin namin next year.Plus, kailangan naming bumawi sa SEA Games, Brian

But for now, relaxed muna kami ng

kaunti compared sa dati.Tuluy-tuloy pa rin naman ang

training namin, pero at least ngayon, nakakapag-Facebook

    na kami, Jean Pierre laughed.

kami. As in walang social life, puro training lang umaga, tanghali, hapon, gabi.

The Sabido brothers and Matias finally

    DELIVER, Matias
