1 About The name Maningrida comes from the local Kunbidji clan name Manayingkarirra. Manayingkarirra is derived from mane djang karirra, meaning the place where the dreaming changed shape.

Maningrida is located on the Central Arnhem coast at the mouth of the Liverpool River. It is 250 km west of Nhulunbuy and 352 km east of Darwin.

Thirty two outstations within a 10,000 square kilometre area are serviced from Maningrida by the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, (email [email protected], website www.bawinanga.com).

1.1 Population In the 2016 Census, there were 2,308 people in Maningrida (State Suburbs) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 89.2% of the population. The median age of people in Maningrida (State Suburbs) was 27 years.

1.2 Power and WaterElectricity is supplied by a diesel generator supplemented by a solar panel array. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied via a bore field south of town, and waste water is treated in sewerage ponds on the outskirts of town.

1.4 Access

1.4.1 Road

Access to Maningrida is via a sealed road to Cahill’s Crossing, and a dirt road for a further 250km (4WD vehicle is recommended but not essential). During the wet season access is limited, with the road often closed for extended periods. The drive takes approximately seven hours from Darwin.

1.4.2 Air

AirNorth operates daily passenger services to Maningrida and lands at the sealed airstrip. Flights take an hour from Darwin and connect through to Milingimbi and Galiwinku.

1.4.3 Sea

One Darwin-based company provides a barge (sea freight) service twice a week to Maningrida throughout the year.

1.5 Local GovernmentThe West Arnhem Regional Council provides local government services in Maningrida. Its headquarters is located in Jabiru, with a Service Delivery Centre located in Maningrida.

1.6 Land TenureManingrida is part of Arnhem Land which is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976. Permits to enter onto Aboriginal Land are required and are available from the Northern Land Council.

3.4 Dhukurrdji LodgeThe Dhukurrdji Lodge offers secure, air conditioned, en-suite accommodation, with a restaurant, boardroom and conference facilities, covered concrete walkways, recreation area, tropical gardens and the lodge is nestled just outside the Maningrida township which is in walking distance or a 5 minute drive and the Lodge is situated some 150 metres from the airport. There is an onsite dining room offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. For guests unable to attend the dining room for lunch, a takeaway lunch bag can be arranged.

4.1 Babbarra Women’s Centre (BAC)Babbarra Women’s Centre supports meaningful livelihoods for women in Maningrida and outstations through the establishment and operation of small business enterprises. Our social enterprises include textile design, printing, sewing, op shop and laundromat operation.

4.2 Maningrida Arts and Culture (BAC)Renowned internationally for its Indigenous art sales, Maningrida Arts and Culture was established in 1973. It is one of the oldest Aboriginal arts centres in Australia. Maningrida Arts and Culture currently services more than 700 artists from Maningrida and its surrounding 32 outstations, covering an area of more than 10,000 square kilometres. 4.3 Djomi Museum and Cultural research OfficeThe Djómi collection has works by generations of artists such as Crusoe Kuningbal and his son Timothy Wulanjbirr, works by Yirawala, England Banggala, Wally Mandarrk, Jack Wunuwun and Les Mirrikuriya (all deceased), as well as artists who are active today.

Visitors are welcome to view the museum’s displays and learn about the cultural practices and history of the Maningrida region.

Proposals for research of the Djómi collection will be considered by the Bawinanga Arts & Cultural Subcommittee, which takes into account existing and strategic priorities, and benefits to Aboriginal artists, landowners, and djungkay (land managers). Proposals must be submitted in writing.

6.4 Night Patrol (BAC)Night Patrol helps to make the community of Maningrida a safer place. We identify risks and improve cultural, physical and cyber safety in the township by working closely with the staff of other service providers, such as the police, Remote School Attendance Strategy staff and youth and health services. Night Patrol also assists with crowd control and safety at community events and celebrations, including footy finals and Territory Day.

6.5 Remote School Attendance (BAC)Bawinanga is contracted to deliver the Australian Government’s community partnership approach to increasing the attendance rates of children at remote schools: the Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS). 6.6 Community Development Program (BAC)The Community Development Program (CDP) provides a number of Work for the Dole activities in Maningrida and on outstations for over 600 clients. Activities include; a garden nursery, aluminium welding, small motor repairs, fabric printing and sewing, soap and jewellery making, music, art and craft production furniture making, fishing and lawn mowing (both of these activities generate additional income for participants).

7.3 The BAC Road Crew (BAC)Bawinanga is contracted to maintain the road between Maningrida and Ramingining, Maningrida to Cahills Crossing road and the main roads on the Coburg Peninsular.
