The Mannes Extension Division Diploma Program offers students an opportunity to study music at the conservatory level in an intensive and systematic fashion.

A “conservatory-within-a-conservatory”, the Extension Division is as old as the Mannes College itself. Our unique Diploma Program offers one of the most respected and comprehensive programs in music education in New York City. It is a three-year course of study, closely paralleling the studies in the Mannes College Degree Program. All the musical activities found in the College will be found in the Extension Division, taught by the finest New York professional musicians and music educators, often the same faculty as in the College division.

The Diploma Program provides maximum flexibility in both scheduling and arranging the curriculum to mesh with the applicant’s musical background and level of ability. Also, admission to the Program is less competitive than admission to the Mannes College Division. Many of our diploma graduates who desire to earn a full college degree go on to pursue their education in some of the most distinguished schools, successfully transferring many of the credits they earned in our excellent program....and quite a few Extension Division students have successfully transferred into the Mannes College Division after a year or two spent sharpening their skills.

The Diploma Program is designed to be completed in three years of full-time study. While both accelerated and part-time study are permitted, the prospective student should be aware there is a 2-year residency requirement, and a minimum requirement of 6 credits each semester must be maintained.

WHAT ABOUT COSTS?The base tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year is only $9,625 per

semester, surely one of the greatest bargains in quality higher music education. And Extension Diploma students qualify for student housing, financial aid, and an international student visa.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COLLEGE DIVISION AND THE EXTENSION DIVISION?

The Extension Division is designed to be flexible, and to serve the needs of a diverse community of students. We offer full-time study, part-time study, and even general credit study. The Extension is a three-year, 72-credit program, while the College Division is four years, requiring at least 120 credits. Most Extension Division students successfully transfer to a full College Division, in some of the most distinguished schools, in as little as a year. Admission to the Extension is much more open; our philosophy is to to help you move forward as a musician, whatever your current level.

IS THE EXTENSION DIPLOMA PROGRAM RIGHT FOR ME?

Students choose to study in the Extension Diploma program for many reasons.

•“I just don’t have the money for a full-college tuition, but I want the kind of challenges found at the college conservatory level.”

•I really want to study at the Mannes College Division, and the Extension Division allows me to be in New York and study with a top teacher, to better prepare for next year.”

•“I want to be a musician, but I think I have some work to do.”

•“I prefer a smaller school where I won’t get lost in the shuffle.”

•“I’m still figuring out if a music career is right for me.”

•“I didn’t get into the school of my first choice, and I really want to study in New York.”

The New SchoolSince its founding in 1919, The

New School has been committed to supporting lifelong learning, examining society, and promoting artistic and academic freedom. It was here that the first university-level courses on race and black culture, urban housing, film history and women’s studies were taught. The New School is an intellectually rich and dynamic university with undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs.

Mannes College The New School for Music is the only music conservatory in Manhattan that is a division of a university. As an integral part of The New School,

Mannes offers its students access to the extensive resources, programs, activities, and courses available in the other divisions: The New School for General Studies, The New School for Social Research, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy, Parsons The New School for Design, Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, The New School for Drama, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Belonging to the New School community enriches the college experience for Mannes students by opening doors to the New School for General Studies, where they can choose for wide array of elective courses. It provides instant access to

the 3 million books and 25,000 journals in the university’s Fogelman Library, NYU’s Bobst Library collection, the resources of the Research Library Association of South Manhattan, and Mannes’ Harry Scherman Music Library. Undergraduate and graduate students at Mannes are also entitled to live in the university’s residence halls.

Like students in the New School’s other divisions, Mannes students enjoy the benefits of attending a vibrant, progressive university that embraces innovation while maintaining its academic integrity and commitment to its original mission.
