  • Why do we call it Football in America? There is some confusion about the name football because the rest of the world calls what we know as soccer Football. A popular theory why the name football is used in America is because most sports that didnt involve riding horses (like polo) were referred to as football games in early America. Football became a local favorite sport and the name stuck and became widely used.

In 1876 the first rules of football were written in Massachusetts by Yale University player and coach, Walter Camp. He was known as the father of American Football. In 1923 the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was renamed the National Football League(NFL) In the 1930s the football design became what it is today.
