To help men and women grow spiritually through prayer, reflection, guidance, and teaching according to the Ignatian tradition
Manresa Welcomes New Director
Fr. Gregory Hyde, SJ, a native of Detroit, entered the Society of Jesus in 1990. He has degrees in German, Communications and Theology from Wayne State, Indi-ana University Bloomington, Michigan State Lansing, and Jesuit School of Theol-ogy in Berkeley, California. Between 1975 and 1994 he taught extensively in Tai-wan, Beijing, Malaysia and Nepal. He had been doing Retreat and Pastoral Minis-try in Detroit from 2003 and worked with us at Manresa from the summer of 2004 to the beginning of 2005. Since then he has worked at our retreat house in Hong Kong. After finishing a three year commitment to the Chinese Province, he has been made available for mission here by the Detroit Provincial and was elected by our Board of Directors in June 2008 as our new Director of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House.
Dear friends and members of the Manresa Jesuit R
etreat House family!
I write to you from the Wah Yan Jesuit College in Kowloon, Hong Kong, where I ha
ve been living and working
for the past two and a half yea
rs looking after the formation of some of our Jesuit s
cholastics, offering retreats and
spiri-
tual direction, and helping wit
h extra-curricular activities in the
school. As is being announced, I have b
een asked to
return home by the Detroit Province Provincial and
missioned by him to serve as the
new director of Manresa, to whi
ch
office Manresa’s Board of Directors had elected me. I’m very happy to b
e returning to Manresa where I
had the pleas-
ure of working a few years ago
for a short time.
I look forward to joining you a
gain and to contributing my energy to sup
port the mission of Manresa. Of course, I
am also saddened to be leaving th
e Jesuit community here in Hong Kong— the mission to China has been
included
among the top priorities of the So
ciety of Jesus, and the need for
Jesuits to serve the Church in China is very gre
at.
Nevertheless, I also realize the im
portance of the work being don
e at Manresa, and recognize that wh
at we do in
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan serves not only to suppo
rt the Church of the Archdiocese of Detroit, but the
world-wide
Church, including the Churches of Asia. In any ev
ent, I bring with me my experience of w
orking in the Far East,
and hope that I can share with
you some of the graces I have received
from my contact with the peoples of t
he Philip-
pines, China, Nepal, and the rest of Asia. I look for
ward to meeting you again this fall, and t
o learning more about
the work now being done at M
anresa and how I might help in sup
porting all the good things that
are happening there.
Please remember me in your prayers as I begin th
is new ministry.
Yours in Christ,
Greg Hyde, SJ

A NOTE From the Interim Director
Friends of Manresa,
Greetings! And my hope that you have been having a refreshing summer so far.
There are a number of things that I'd like to write about, so let me get to them promptly. We had two unusual visits in the spring. The As-sociate General Treasurer of the Society of Jesus, Father Robert Grimm, S.J., came to do the Soci-ety's equivalent of an audit of the books of both the Retreat House and of the Jesuit Community. Father found our books in reasonably good order, but he seemed to me more somber about our prospects than is needful. Despite that, his was a pleasant visit, since we have known one another for some years. Then, about the same time, a dozen or more religious and government people from Kyrgyzstan paid us a visit. After years under the Soviets, and as religion is only recently surfacing in their area, they wanted to talk with people en-gaged in religious work and to hear how our Church-State relations worked. Despite the language handicap, we managed a good exchange and, since the visit, we heard from their guide that their visit with us was a highlight on their three-week tour in the Detroit area.
A couple of important changes have also taken place since my last writing. Across the spring Hugh Buchanan held three sessions for the cap-tains and lieutenants of our retreat groups. These were sessions that provided some training as well as some time for the men to help one another with re-cruitment ideas. At the same time we have combined some of the smaller weekend groups and thus opened up a couple of weekends for new groups. The thinking behind all this is that we need to increase our operation revenue and so depend less on “return on investment.” For, undoubtedly, in the pre-sent volatile market climate our investment returns will be less.
It is my pleasure, finally, to tell you that at its June 16 meeting the Manresa Board of Directors elected Father Gregory J. Hyde, S. J. as the new Director of Manresa starting sometime in mid-August. Father spent about a half year here doing retreats before he headed to Hong Kong for a three-year stint. Now he is coming back to us. There is an article about him elsewhere in this issue of Manresa Matters, so I say no more about Father, except to wel-come him and ask you join me in prayer: that the Holy Trinity bless Father Hyde's leadership role here; that it be a service to the Church and the Society of Jesus, as we all share in God's work of building the Kingdom.
Peace!
P.S. And what about your correspondent? According to Fr. Provincial Scullin, he “will remain a vital part of Manresa's mission to hand on the Spiri-tual Exercises.”
Fr. Walter L. Farrell, S.J.

It is always good to have a good rhythm going when you’re trying to accomplish a task. Unfortu-nately, for a while during this spring, we were treated to regular rhythm of banging from our water pipes, much to the distraction and annoyance of many retreatants! That kind of rhythm isn’t so welcome, if your primary purpose is to slow down and listen to God.
A significant part of our water system is a pressure reducing valve which lowers the high water pressure in a 4-inch supply main to a level our pipes and joints can withstand. In time, though, the valve builds up corro-sion and sediment compromising the ability of the re-ducer to do its job.
Rebuilding the valve requires technical knowledge of the system and a fair degree of plumbing skills. Our maintenance team allowed that they could manage the repair themselves and save the House considerably off the outside quotes we had received.
Bottom line, Dave Morgan and Peter Luyckx pur-chased the materials and completed the job within five hours. The total savings to the House was $927 off the best quotes we received from qualified contractors.
In acknowledgement of their efforts and skill, Pete and Dave were given Recognition Awards by Fr. Farrell and Tom Hurley including gift certificates to Home Depot.
Nice job and congratulations to Pete and Dave!
Storms over ManresaStorms over ManresaStorms over ManresaStorms over Manresa Like many of our neighbors, Manresa experienced
the winds and rains of the spring when the storms of June rolled through Bloomfield Hills. While many of our older trees suffered major damage, the buildings and main facilities were unharmed through the ordeal.
Lost was the Green Walk-Over Bridge to the is-land. A 25-foot branch from the top of a willow snapped off and made a direct landing on the top of the bridge. Repairs will be made by the time you read this and much of the bridge was salvageable. We also suffered minor damage to the roof of the St. Joe’s Ga-zebo. The old willows near the banks of the Rouge were hardest hit, many snapping in the turmoil or fal-ling to the insistence of the high winds.
Still, God is good. No injuries to persons, no real disruptions to operations except perhaps a little incon-venience during temporary black-outs that gave us the opportunity to exercise patience. Thank you for your prayers.
Chapel RefurbishingChapel RefurbishingChapel RefurbishingChapel Refurbishing We are looking for a few donors who may be able to sponsor a renovation of the Main Chapel. The walls yearn for
patching and new paint and the curtains around the altar need replacement. The last renovation has served us well for over 15 years, but it is time to update. A plan is ready for execution, but we would like to minimize the hit to the Capital Budget. If you can help, please contact Hugh Buchanan (248) 644-4933.

Madonna della Strada Madonna della Strada Madonna della Strada Madonna della Strada When Fr. Robert Scullin, S.J., the Superior of the Detroit
Jesuit Province returned from the Jesuits’ recent 35th General Congregation in Rome, he brought back for Manresa a print of the Madonna della Strada, Our Lady of the Way.
This image has always been important to Jesuits. It came from a little church of the same name that Ignatius adopted as the center of his activity in Rome. When the small structure was razed to build the Mother Church of the Society around the world, the Church of the Gesù, the fresco was removed to one of the chapels of the new church.
Recently, the layers of “restorative” paint accumulated over the centuries were removed to reveal beneath a 13th century fresco of unsuspected delicacy and beauty. The next time you are at Manresa look for it in our library.

Sunshine and good cheer pervaded Manresa on June 1 as over 100 people visited the sculp-tured grounds and historic buildings during our annual Open House. We were blessed with many volunteers who prepared the House, greeted and registered guests, and helped to give tours of the facility and grounds. It was a won-derful day. We were even blessed with live mu-sic, compliments of Ben Lance and John Li, stu-dents at De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren. Classical and popular music and even a little Irish jig completed the entertainment in the Library and Dining areas to the delight of all.
The dedication of so many people made the day very special. Without their inspired and gen-erous contributions, it would have been impossi-ble. We received many compliments on the House and the wonderful gardens and we pass them on to the many who helped. A special “Thank You” goes to this year’s chairs, Dave Brockman, Bob Kendell and Terri Weber.
Garden Day and Adopt a GardenGarden Day and Adopt a GardenGarden Day and Adopt a GardenGarden Day and Adopt a Garden Many hands make light work, the saying
goes, and that was evident in our two Garden Days at Manresa. We were blessed with good weather, not too hot, not too wet. Organized by Ann Wiacek, Ann Marie Monette and Terri We-ber, the volunteer cadre of green thumbs includ-ing a group of Brother Rice students weeded, hoed, planted and mulched the many wonderful gardens around the House and grounds. There are still a few orphaned gardens that need adop-tion! Stop in and find one that your tender lov-ing care can nurture. Contact Ann or Ann Marie through the Manresa Office.
An Ignatian Pilgrimage Fr. Bernie Owens, SJ is planning to lead a trip to
Lourdes and Spain May 18 - 31, 2009. He is considering such sites as: Loyola where St. Ignatius was born, Pam-plona where he was wounded, Javier the home of St. Fran-cis, Montserrat the site of Ignatius’ vigil, Manresa after which we are named, Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Avila, and Segovia. Let us know if you are interested (no obliga-tions) and we will send you a brochure as soon as the de-tails are finalized.
