Within just a few months, French words were being spoken across the school. Within a another couple of months, children were blending words to make sentences and singing songs in French. Already our Grade 2 classes are creang phrases in French. Its inspiraonal learning that Holly has achieved in her first year of teaching. Principal’s Report Hello Families, It is so nice to at least feel the sun on our backs. Let’s hope it hangs around for a while and doesn’t go from being cool to very hot overnight. For those of us on tank water, a little bit of rain on a weekly basis would be welcome (rain dances are welcome). It could become an expensive summer if this pattern of low rainfall continues. PREP TRANSITION As always, it’s been a couple of very busy weeks at MPS. This week we welcomed our new super cute preps. The transition was incredibly smooth. fees if you have not already paid. This money goes towards paying for resources which directly improves the learning experience for your child. In the past this money has paid for computers, ipads, cameras, PE equipment, science equipment, reading resources, and improvements within the school physical environment. Without your fees, we would be limited in what we are able to supply. Thank you to the parents who have paid the contributions or continue to, through a payment plan. We are very grateful and appreciative. YOUNG MEN OLD MOUNTAINS Each year the “Young Men Old Mountain” program is offered to our Grade 6 boys. This year 11 students participated; Charlie Hall, Charlie Stephens, Judah Kelleher, Zac Empey, Jackson Van der Hoeven, Benson Clarke, Cayd Tumai Totorewa, Oscar Clelland, Ned Hall, Daniel Biram and Sam Guppy. What a fantastic group of boys to send off on a challenging 5 days of hiking and bush camping. According to the boys, the best part was Gardeners Hut (poo with a view). There were views of the Howqua River and Mt Buller, which Zac believes was the best view you would ever see. Thank you to the Outdoor Education Group who organised this very valuable experience for our students. During the camp, leadership skills were developed and built based on overcoming challenges and supporting one another. Please read the report from the boys. Photos will be included in the next newsletter. UNIFORM Many of our students are not in full uniform. Our overflowing lost property possibly contains your child’s missing jumper. If it doesn’t have a name on it, chances are that the jumper remains in lost property as students are unable to identify their clothing. Our school policy states that students will be in school uniform. Please ensure that your child has their name on their clothing. Secondly, if you can ensure your child is in full school uniform, you are respecting the policy established by our parent school council. There is also a blue scooter that has been next to the lost property bin for the last few weeks. Please collect it if it is yours otherwise it will be going to Vinnies next week. CURRICULUM DAY On Monday the 5th November, the children will have a long weekend due to a curriculum day. Teachers will be at school focussing on the 2018 data. This data includes; parent opinion survey, student attitudes to school survey, staff survey, Naplan results and the schools panorama report, which documents 2018 improvements. Teachers will then move on to reassessing our MPS assessment schedule, evaluating Misty Adoniou mentor text in writing, and exploring High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS). It will be a full but exciting day of professional learning. COMMUNICATION If you have any concerns regarding your child’s educational journey, please do not hesitate to ring and make an appointment with either myself; Tom MacMunn (AP); Nicole Comerford (Welfare coordinator), or your child’s classroom teacher. Working as a team ensures success.

WORKING BEE Last Sunday the school had its final working bee for the 2018 year. I apologise for the short notice. A few parents have suggested areas of improvement in notifying parents so thank you for your advice and I will discuss it with our school council members at the next meeting. Thank you to everyone who came. Although we were down on numbers in comparison to recent working bees, we were certainly not down on manpower! We had several people build two new sandpits. Our previous sand pit was falling down and proving to be an OHS issue. Maro Brega turned up with his machine and ripped apart the original framework. Add in some strong looking parents to create the new pits. Add the new sand and some toys and once again, we have a fabulous sand pit area. A group of parents worked hard weeding and mulching the area facing Apollo Street. Our pizza oven had a new layer of paint applied; the deck outside Grade 1-2 was primed and painted and the garden pruned. It is incredible the work that can take place when you have a group of keen and enthusiastic workers. I hope that in 2019 all families can contribute by attending one working bee in the year. That way we can continue to work hard as a school community to sustain and improve our school environment. NB. If you accidentally took home a round headed shovel please return to the school office ASAP. Julie McInnes

EXCURSION PAYMENTS – CSEF

There are many excursions planned for this term. Please ensure that you check the balance on your family account before paying so that any credit you may have can be allocated towards these costs. Please contact the school office if you are unsure.

ABSENCES

It is essential that parents/carers contact the school to explain why children are not at school. You can call the office, email, or submit an absence note via the Sentral App. If your child is recorded as absent without an explanation you will be contacted by SMS. Please call the office when you receive a message. Letters will also be sent home regularly during term if your child has 2 or more unexplained absences. You need to provide reasons why your child wasn’t at school against each date in the letter and return to school. Thanks for your cooperation.

AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS Please make sure your child/children know if they are

catching the bus; being picked up & by whom; walking/

riding or any other arrangement. It solves a lot of distress

and confusion at the end of the school day if children know

what they are doing. If they tend to forget write it down for

them or use pictures.

SPORTS NEWS — REGIONAL ATHLETICS

On Friday 19th October 27 MPS students participated in the Regional Athletics Championships in Albury! We had 47 students overall representing our Mansfield District, which is a great result. The sun was out and it was a hot day for children! They all competed extremely well under tough circumstances. Some were at a Regional level for the first time, others for their fourth time. Our students cheered on each other and supported each other, no matter the result. It was a great day out and the school is very proud of not just our children’s results, but their behaviour and positive attitude throughout the day.

Well done to all the following who competed at Regional: BOYS: Tristan Fox (800m, 1500m), Liam SMITH (100m), Ethan VISSER (Hurdles), Sam GUPPY (1500m), Jett KIPPING (200m), Judah KELLEHER (1500m), Oscar CLELLAND (Relay), Zach EMPEY (Relay), Charlie STEPHENS (Triple Jump & Long Jump), Ashton DEAN (Relay), Lockie PECK (100m, Relay) GIRLS: Tasia CIARMA (Relay), Jacoba TANNER ( Long Jump & Relay), Elsie LEATHAM (Discus), Eva CLYDESDALE (1500m), Ellie KONIG (Relay), Eve CHANDLER (Relay), Amelia CLYDESDALE (200m & Relay), Molly DUNN (Relay), Pearl KONIG (100m & Relay), Brianna WEIGHT (Relay), Emerson KEATCH (Shot Put), Hannah ALLEN (100m, 200m), Indi NICHOLLS (1500m), Erin BROND (Discus), Isabel PETERSEN (High Jump & 100m) & Jamie DAVIS (200m)

Special congratulations to Indi Nicholls who placed 2nd in the 1500m & Jacoba Tanner who placed 2nd in the Long Jump. They have both now made it through to the State Championships on Monday 29th Oct in Melbourne! Also congratulations to Emerson Keatch who received a 3rd medal in shot put, and just missing out on a place at State. And special thanks to Billie Leatham who came as a parent but ended up being our personal photographer - Thanks Billie.

GRADE 6 HIKE Our Grade 6s set off on their practice hike two weeks ago, to help prepare them for their upcoming School 2 Summit camp. They walked to Rifflebutts and back, wearing the clothes and carrying the items they will be using on the actual camp. It was a great day to chat about all different parts of the camp and explore not just the physical challenges, but the mental and emotional ones also. They finished the day with a Bike Ed session and explored controlling the bike, gaining skills and learning about gears. S2S is not far away and the Grade 6s are getting excited! Well done to all the 6s that came prepared for the day. Lets hope that is a sign of what’s to come.

PREP HIKE

Our Preps had their very first hike on Friday 26th October. It was a first for the school also, sending preps out on a hike to start their School 2 Summit adventures. WHAT A GREAT DAY……Our Preps were amazing!!! We had perfect weather and luckily avoided any slithering friends! They started their walk from Carters Rd picnic area and followed the river all the way to Mirrimbah. There were stops along the way and plenty of nature to see. Special thanks to our parent helpers who came along on the day to help support our Preps and thanks to the Prep Staff for being great supporters of getting our kids out into our beautiful country side and getting them excited to be apart of MPS and the School 2 Summit program.

YOUNG MEN OLD MOUNTAINS 23RD—26TH OCTOBER

Charlie Hall, Charlie Stephens, Judah Kelleher, Zac Empey, Jackson Van der Hoeven, Benson Clarke, Cayd Tumai Totorewa, Oscar Clelland, Ned Hall, Daniel Biram and Sam Guppy

On the first day we met up at 8:30am at school. We left school and went to the Botanical Gardens to put all our stuff in the hiking packs. It was 20kg pack on our shoulders! We drove up to Timbertop saddle and had a 30min lunch before we began walking. We hiked to Sheepyard Flat where we set up camp and cooked dinner. After dinner we sat around a camp fire one of our two leaders lit a fire with a flint & steel. That night we went to bed & slept well! In the morning we had a noisy lift off until we got on the track. We walked to Tunnel bend flat where we had lunch. We continued hiking to Gardeners hut. All up we walked 9kms. At Gardeners hut there was a toilet on a platform called ‘Poo with a view’. That night the leaders lit another fire with the flint & steel and then it was off to bed. On day 3 we got up quickly and hit the trail. The view from the high track was great! Early afternoon we arrived at 8mile flat having travelled 8km. We did some teamwork activities before dinner and bed. On day 4 we did not hike but instead did service for National Parks Vic. We also did some solo time and made metal character trait necklaces. The next day we were at 7mile flat at 8:30am for pick up to be driven back to the Botanical park where we met up with our parents before a presentation and returning home.

The best things about camp: The environment; Goal setting; Fraser & Mark; Camping; Hiking; Hanging out with

each other; Riddles; Difficulties; Team Challenges.
