Historically, acrylics were an alternative to oil-based paints, and therefore were designed to mimic them in appearance, consistency and performance. Now that acrylic materials have secured a place for themselves in the modern art world, they are no longer limited to that format. Mantegna Artists’ Acrylic colours are heavy-bodied, paste-like colours that hold a great deal of texture and detail and are easy to manipulate with anything from a very soft brush to a rigid palette knife. Because of their mass, these thick colours will stay wet longer on the palette and can be used for several days if the palette is protected with an airtight seal.

man·te·gna (män te´nyä) n : Andrea Mantegna (1431 - 1506), a well known 15th century Italian painter and engraver is noted for his stun-ning ceiling frescoes. His work is characterized by classi-cal elements and shows a strong influence by Donatello.

Mantegna is credited with the introduction of spatial illusionism.

Mantegna offers a traditional and modern pigment selection that includes 6 iridescent colours, 6 interference colours and a very useful neutral gray.

Interference Colours - create an effect of shifting hue with motion and light , seen every day in nature and technology, from cars, fabrics, an oil slick, or butterfly wings. With Mantegna Interference colours, you can apply that same radiance to your paintings. Interference pigments are a combination of mica particles coated with titanium dioxide. The thinly laminated mica platelets refract 2 separate light wavelengths.

Iridescent Colours - Shiny, opulent, and very rich looking, the iridescent acrylic palette paints with the ease of warm butter and have the patina of metal. They can be used to simulate metal, or provide depth to a translucent glaze or reflective backdrop.

the difference between artist and studio grade acrylics There are many misconceptions about the limitations of student or bargain quality acrylics. Artist-grade acrylics are the top of the line paints, while student acrylics are designed to be an economical alternative. Artists’ acrylics have a much higher pigment load, finer quality raw materials and contain little or no fillers. The pigment is present in a very large quantity in artist-grade acrylics. This means you get more colour for your dollar. The more pigment there is, the further you can stretch your colours. Student and craft paints can offer the same handling characteristics as their high-end counterparts, without all the bells and whistles. They also have a tendency to appear more matte when dry.

what are fluid acrylics?The natural state of the acrylic polymer emulsion is a liquid one. Liquid acrylics therefore are the “purest” form of acrylic paints. Brimming with pigment, they can be splattered, swished, or dripped onto your painting. The flow of liquid acrylics allows for more control and longer brush strokes. Painting long, flat, uniform strokes of colour is one of the strengths of this format. The common conception that liquid acrylics are a diluted form of the high viscosity paints in wrong. At the artist-quality level, liquid acrylics have the same pigment load as their high-viscosity counterparts. Liquid colours are pourable and have enough body to achieve soft textures and show brush strokes.

Mantegna Fluid Acrylics are wonderfully versatile, professional quality liquid acrylic colors with the consistency of heavy cream.

Highly pigmented, their excellent tinting strength produces strong color even when mixed with acrylic medium or when thinned with water for staining effects. This allows the artist to create surfaces from heavy impasto to thin glazes without having to break down the thick binder that is in Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Paints.

Acrylic mediums form the backbone of acrylic painting technique, providing the artist with the vehicle needed to achieve an endless variety of effects and expanding the boundaries of acrylic painting. Mantegna acrylic mediums were developed specifically for use with Mantegna Acrylic colours and are suitable for artists whose painting style benefits from extended working time. They can be used for a wide range of techniques, including portraiture, plein air painting, monoprinting, and screenprinting.

matte soft gel mediumReduces the gloss of the acrylic paint, while maintaining viscosity and strength. It effectively binds the paint with the painting surface and increases durability. Great as the last layer of your painting and dries to a satin finish. This product can also be diluted with water. This product includes silica, which dries to a translucent fin-ish when applied in thick coats. To achieve high transparency with a Matte finish, apply Matte Gel Medium as a final layer to a surface that has had Gloss Gel Medium applied to it. Matte Gel Medium can also be used as collage adhesive.
