1 - General Information

Enerscope-3S Studio is a Windows software used for the processing of data recorded by Enerscope-3 power analyzer.

Enerscope-3S Studio can repeat and extend all analyses performed on a system by the abovementioned instruments.

It allows users to reconstruct waveforms, power data, events occurring during a Measurement Campaign, etc.

Measurement Campaigns are saved by Enerscope-3S on a microSD memory card. The data stored on it can later be

transferred to a PC for analysis, creating and printing reports, filing and other important operations.

The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To

transfer a Measurement Campaign, the memory card must first be removed from Enerscope-3S (make sure a campaign

is not being performed, otherwise all data will be lost). With an external SD or uSD memory card reader, data can be

copied onto the hard disk using the Copy & Paste function of Windows Explorer. Files can also be opened directly from

the memory card. The settings and types of Measurement Campaigns will be described in detail below.

Two or more campaigns can be analysed at the same time. The only limitation is the PC's processing capacity, available

memory and free disk space.

The default language can be selected in real time by changing the international settings for numbers, currency, date

and time, etc. Upon first run, the program will be configured automatically with local/international settings.

1.1 - Main Window

The application displays the home screen below:

This screen consists of a title, a main menu, and toolbars (for quick access to the most important functions of the

application). There is also a work area displaying the different windows with the instrument’s measurements, graphs,

etc., and a status bar with the system's clock.

Page 4: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

1.2 - Main Menu

• File: this menu allows users to open, print, and view the print preview of a Measurement Campaign file.

• Options: this menu allows users to set the default language.

• View: this menu allows users to view the different toolbars, as well as the status bar.

• Help: this menu allows users to view information about the software and the help file.

A set of icons - which are grouped by type in 5 different toolbars - are displayed below the main menu.

• Main,

• Campaign View,

• Trend Control,

• Record Position,

• Harmonic Spectrum Mode,

The user can choose to view/hide each toolbar from the View Menu under the Main Menu. The position of each

toolbar can also be changed as follows: place the cursor on the area next to the buttons of a toolbar and drag the

toolbar while clicking on and holding down the left mouse button. The selected toolbar is unlocked from its original

position and can be dragged by moving the cursor. When the left mouse button is released, the toolbar is drawn in

the new position. The toolbar can be positioned on anywhere on the screen or docked to any edge of the main window.

2 - Measurement Campaigns

2.1 - Preliminary Notes

As already mentioned, Enerscope-3S allow users to perform measurement campaigns and store different

information regarding power.

Measurement campaigns can be performed in two different modes:

• Manual: The user manually decides when to start and stop data recording;

• Scheduled: The user configures one or more campaigns in a campaign list. The automatic campaign

management system constantly monitors the status of the list, performing the campaigns on the list

automatically.

Three different types of files may be stored on the memory card:

• Measurement Campaign (manual or scheduled): In which the records with the information of the samples of

voltage and current input signals are saved at regular intervals;

• Fast Transients: In which the transient-type swell and overcurrent phenomena are captured in the single or

repetitive event mode;

• Inrush Current: In which the inrush current waveform is captured.

2.2 - Organisation of Campaigns on Memory Card

Each Measurement Campaign is stored according to the same structure: the root directory of the uSD memory card

will contain as many subdirectories as there are campaign files. These subdirectories will have the same name of the

.srv file contained in each of them. The file name is set by the user on the measurement instrument. For example, let

us suppose the uSD memory card has been recognised by the operating system as a new drive with the letter F; then

the file structure will be as follows:

Page 5: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

A minor clarification is now needed. So far we have said that a Measurement Campaign is a set of binary data organised

in records. Obviously, its contents will depend on the nature of each campaign. A record consists of the samples for

each input signal for a total of 2 signal periods.

It is now important to point out that the entire Enerscope-3S Studio application is structured according to the

measurement records: the positioning within the survey, graphs, calculations, etc. are based on these information

packets.

3 - Viewing and Processing a Measurement Campaign

To open and view a Measurement Campaign file, select File > Open and double-click on the desired file.

When opening, the program automatically recognises the type of the selected file (Campaign, Transients or Inrush

Current) and displays certain windows containing the measurements and graphs.

3.1 - Measurement Campaign

The Main Menu is structured as described below (the relevant icons in the toolbars are enabled):

• File: this menu allows users to open, close, print and view the print preview of a Measurement Campaign

file.

• Setup: this menu allows users to configure the trend of RMS real-time measurements (measurement trend).

• Options: this menu allows users to set the colours of the different graphs (waveform, harmonic spectrum,

trend, etc.).

Page 6: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

• View: this menu allows users to select the measurements and graphs to be shown, as well as to show/hide

the different toolbars and the status bar.

• Window: this menu allows users to change the window arrangement or to view a specific window on top.

• Help: this menu allows users to view information about the software and the help file.

All windows feature a main window - featuring tabs - showing the instrument’s setup parameters and Measurement

Campaign settings.

The first tab, i.e. Timings, displays the Begin & End date and time of a survey, and the relevant data recording rate

(Sample rate).

The second tab, i.e. Instrument setup, shows the parameters used by the instrument while performing the campaign.

In particular, it shows the transformation ratios of voltage, current and auxiliary channel inputs, type of amperometric

sensor (Clamp, Flexible or TA), any inversion in current sensors, type of insertion (two, three or four wires), and

nominal frequency for harmonic analysis, as well as two check boxes to enable the auxiliary input and extended voltage

input scale. It also shows the instrument firmware version.

The General tab shows other information such as the campaign name, any user's notes, and survey type, i.e. time-

based or RMS.

Page 7: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

The last two tabs finalise the configuration process of the instrument, showing the parameters for the EN50160

analysis and the thresholds for capturing swell and overcurrent phenomena. These tabs do not affect time-based

campaigns, and will be described below.

In addition to the main window, secondary windows can be displayed at the user's choice. When opening a campaign,

the following views are shown by default: RMS Measurements, Samples (records), Trends and Vector Meter.

All views which allow users to analyse a campaign can be accessed from the View Menu or from the toolbar icons.

When placing the cursor on the different icons, a label with a brief description of the related icon appears.

3.1.1 - RMS Measurements

This window displays the main RMS measurements, both three-phase and single-phase, such as:

voltage (V), current (I), cosø, frequency (f), active power (P), reactive power (Q), apparent power (S), power factor

(PF), the four counters of active/reactive, absorbed/generated and inductive/capacitive power (Wh abs, Wh gen, varh

ind and varh cap), the apparent power counter (VAh), and the average power factor (PF avg).

The values of the auxiliary channel are shown on the right.

Page 8: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

3.1.2 - Records: Excel-Style RMS Measurement Grid

When selecting Records from the View Menu, a window containing an Excel-style grid appears. The rows represent

the campaign records in chronological order, and each column contains the RMS value of the parameter shown under

the relevant heading.

Page 9: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 9 ~

3.1.2.1 - Plotting a Set of Measurements

Users can select from one to four measures (columns) for a maximum of 5000 records (press and hold down ctrl key

to select more columns). After selecting the desired measurements, right-click and select "Plot rms" from the context

menu. A new window will be displayed where the relevant graphs of the selected measurements will be drawn in

oscilloscope-type quadrants.

In this window, users can select the method used for drawing the measurements, i.e. histogram or trend. If the number

of selected records is greater than the quadrant’s graphic capability, use the buttons found in the lower left-hand

corner (< and >) to scroll through the measurements shown in either direction.

This window also shows the following fields:

• Date of the records shown in the oscillogram;

Page 10: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 10 ~

• Total number of selected records;

• Recording frequency (Sample Rate).

The recording time of the first and last record currently shown in the graph is displayed below each oscillogram along

the x-axis. Placing the cursor on any point of the graphs for more than 2 seconds will activate the Point and Measure

function, i.e. a small indicator showing the relevant measurement - expressed in the units indicated on the x- and y-

axes of the reference system - is automatically displayed.

3.1.2.2 - Exporting a Set of Measurements

To export data, select the desired records as described above, right-click and select Export from the context menu.

The selected records will automatically be exported, and a text file with an .M000 extension will be created in the

same directory as that of the campaign file, which can be imported into a spreadsheet (e.g. an Excel file).

3.1.3 - Time Trend of RMS Measurements

Enerscope-3S Studio allows users to plot the time trend of RMS values. The above figure shows the default window

showing the trend of 4 measurements, i.e. voltage (V), current (I), active power (P), and three-phase power factor (PF).

In this case, the scale factor for the y-axis is automatic and always keeps the signal at the maximum resolution (80%

on the full scale).

Placing the cursor on any point of the graphs for more than 2 seconds will activate the Point and Measure function,

i.e. a small indicator showing the relevant measurement - expressed in the units indicated on the x- and y-axes of the

reference system - is automatically displayed.

3.1.3.1 - Recorder Toolbar

When the measurement trend window is displayed during a campaign, the recorder function is enabled.

This allows users to scroll through the Measurement Campaign, creating an animation as if it were a real-time

measurement.

The recorder toolbar allows users to move to the beginning or end of a survey, as well as forward or rewind at normal

or fast speed. Press the pause button to pause the survey.

Page 11: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 11 ~

If other secondary views are displayed together with the measurement trend, these will be associated with the

recorder function, i.e. they will be paused when the pause function of the trend is activated. When the pause function

is activated, the secondary views display the first record in the interval of the measurement trend displayed.

Use the buttons to the right of the recorder toolbar to expand or reduce the time interval for better viewing.

3.1.3.2 - Setting the Number of Traces and the Parameters associated with a Trace

Select Setup > Trend to change the number of traces (or channels) displayed in the trend window and the parameter

associated with each trace.

A minimum of 1 to a maximum of 4 traces can be displayed. Check the Enable box to enable/disable a channel. Select

the parameter to be associated with the channel

in the relevant drop-down menu. The following measures may be selected:

Note: If V, I or Cos phi value is selected, the relevant harmonic order must be specified in the relevant box.

The changes made are permanent, i.e. the program saves them in the setup log so that they can be restored for future

work sessions.

3.1.3.3 - Record Position Bar: Indicators of Current Record and Record Search

The "Record Position" bar indicates the number, date and time of the record currently displayed in the measurement

and graph windows. While playing, the indicators are constantly updated with the information regarding the current

record. If the campaign is paused, the window displays the last values.

When only the measurements are displayed, the indicators are empty, unless the pause function is activated and the

recorder function is being used.

Use the Find Record function to view any point of a Measurement Campaign.

When the button located to the left of the indicators is pressed, the following window is displayed:

Page 12: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

~ 12 ~

Select/deselect the "Find by measured value" check box to search for an event based on:

• Date and Time

• Threshold of a specific measurement, using the operators >, <, = to filter the events with a value higher or

lower than or the same as the set threshold.

3.1.4 - Vector Meter

This window shows the fundamental measurements of voltages (phase and neutral) and currents in vector mode, i.e.

in module and phase. The panel to the right of the graph shows the voltages and currents with the relevant phase

modules and angles, as well as the cosine of the phase displacement angle between V1-I1, V2-I2, and V3-I3, and an

indication of the relevant load type, i.e. inductive or capacitive.

The percentage of unbalance of the three-phase voltage system is also shown. Values which are close to 0% indicate

a balanced system.

Page 13: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 13 ~

3.1.5 - Harmonic Spectrums

When selecting View > Spectrum or using the special icons on the Campaign View toolbar, the windows of the following

harmonic histograms will be displayed:

• V1-I1

• V2-I2

• V3-I3

• I4

• AUX

These windows consist of two side-by-side sections:

• A section showing the numerical values of V and I measurements, as well as the Cos phi value from the 1st to

the 50th harmonic, expressed as an absolute value and percentage compared to the fundamental.

• A section showing the graphs of V and I harmonic spectrums, expressed as a percentage compared to the

fundamental.

Drag the vertical bar between the two sections to change their size.

Press a column heading in the left section to sort the relevant measurements by value, from the lowest to the highest.

Measurements are sorted by number of harmonic order by default (first column on the left).

Placing the cursor on any point of the graphs for more than 2 seconds will activate the Point and Measure function,

i.e. a small indicator showing the relevant measurement - expressed in the units indicated on the x- and y-axes of the

reference system - is automatically displayed. In this case, the percentage value of the harmonic item and the number

of harmonic order with the relevant frequency will be displayed.

Use the special toolbar icon to change the display scale, i.e. linear or logarithmic (only for the y-axis). If the logarithmic

scale is selected, a quick magnification of the lowest percentage values will appear.

The frequency for each harmonic order is a multiple of the fundamental frequency, e.g. for a frequency of 50Hz, the

1st order will be 50Hz, the 2nd order will be 100Hz, the 3rd order will be 150Hz, and so on. Similarly, for a frequency

of 60Hz, the 1st order will be 60Hz, the 2nd order will be 120Hz, the 3rd order will be 180Hz, etc.

3.1.6 - THD Measurements

Select View > THD to display a window containing three panes - one for each phase - showing the total harmonic

distortion factor (Total Harmonic Distortion Factor = THD%) of voltage and current signals compared to the

fundamental and the total RMS value.

3.1.7 - Voltage & Current Waveforms

Select View > Waveforms or use the special icons of the Campaign View toolbar to view the waveforms of the following

measurements:

• V1-V2-V3 (star)

• V1-V2-V3 (triangle)

• I1-I2-I3

• V1-I1

• V2-I2

• V3-I3

• I4

• AUX

Page 15: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

These windows allow users to observe the waveforms for all voltage and current inputs in detail, in a range of different

combinations. A description of the waveform windows is provided below, using a window as an example. However,

the same concepts can be applied to all other windows of this type. A waveform view is a small oscilloscope. The

control panel is shown on the left side, whereas the oscillograms are found on the right. The number and type of

signals displayed will depend on the type of view selected.

As shown in the figure on the left, the control panel consists of three selectors to

change the gain or amplitude for each channel, a common selector to change the

time base, a scroll bar to scroll through the area displayed within the relevant record

(Note: A record corresponds to 2 periods), and a check box to combine all channels

in a single grid.

Placing the cursor on any point of the graphs for more than 2 seconds will activate

the Point and Measure function, i.e. a small indicator showing the relevant

measurement - expressed in the units indicated on the x- and y-axes of the reference

system - is automatically displayed. In this case, the Volts or Amperes and the

number of milliseconds measured from the beginning of the buffer will be displayed.

Use the Time base selector to increase or decrease resolution by time units.

Use the CH1, CH2 or CH3 selectors to increase or decrease signal amplitudes.

Check the “Show Sample” box to display all the single records whose interpolation

has generated the waveforms.

Check the “Single grid” box to group all channels in a single grid. In this case, the

corresponding channel must be selected to use the Point and Measure function on

a trace.

Use the Window Position scroll bar to scroll through the area displayed. This function is useful to search for specific

events.

Page 16: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

3.1.8 - Fast Transients

If transient phenomena occur during a Measurement Campaign, Enerscope-3S can record and store them without

limitations (unlike what happens in real-time mode, where the instrument only stores the last 5 events in chronological

order), as described below.

3.1.8.1 - Event List

Select View > Transients or use the icon to display a window showing a list of the events that occurred during

the Measurement Campaign.

For each event, the following information will be shown:

• Type of event, i.e. Dip, Swell or Interruption;

• Start date and time;

• Duration;

• Maximum or residual value expressed in absolute value.

3.1.8.2 - Event Table

Select View > Transients or use the icon to display a window showing a table of all the events that occurred

during the Measurement Campaign.

This is another method to display SAGS. The table shows time intervals on the x-axis, and voltage intervals on the y-

axis. Voltage intervals are expressed in percentages compared to nominal voltage (Unom). Every cell is increased by a

unit when a specific event falls within the relevant time and voltage interval. SAGS events can therefore be mapped.

Page 17: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 17 ~

3.1.8.3 - Event Graph

Select View > Transients or use the icon to display a graph showing all the events that occurred during the

Measurement Campaign.

The x-axis shows the duration (on a logarithmic scale), whereas the y-axis shows the percentage value compared to

the nominal value.

The graph graphically displays the distribution of the events taken into consideration. Every coloured dot represents

a different event. The different areas populated by anomalous phenomena can thus be identified through a quick

visual inspection.

3.2 - Transient Campaign

The file name of a “Transient” campaign is always TRAN_XXX, where XXX is a progressive number.

These files can always be found in the root directory of the uSD card. When a transient campaign file is opened, the

same software interface used for Measurement Campaigns will appear.

Page 18: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 18 ~

Unlike a Measurement Campaign, when a transient campaign is opened, the main window will automatically display

the “Transients” tab, showing the instrument settings used during the campaign.

The peak value set as a trigger threshold, as well as the trigger sources for voltage and current are shown in the

“Transients” tab. These trigger sources can be enabled individually or together. An important feature of this type of

campaign is that events captured with different trigger thresholds and sources can coexist in the same survey.

The trigger mode to be used for the campaign can also be selected, i.e.:

• Single shot: The event consists of a single record, regardless of the duration of the phenomenon;

• Auto: The event consists of one or more records which contain the entire phenomenon.

The following 4 windows are displayed by default: Main Window, Transient List, Voltage Waveforms, Current

Waveforms. Other functions - and the relevant icons - will also be enabled, and the unavailable functions will be

disabled.

The View Menu and toolbar change and adapt to this type of campaign, i.e. the spectrum analysis, trend and vector

meter become unavailable. However, the button in the “Transient List” window is enabled.

Page 19: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 19 ~

The other available windows can be accessed using the relevant icons or from the View Menu. These windows are

the same as those described for Measurement Campaigns, except for the “Waveforms” windows, where the

following dotted lines will be displayed for each waveform:

• A vertical green line which represents the instant in which the event selected in the “Transient List” window

occurred (Trg = trigger).

• 2 horizontal lines which represent the minimum and maximum trigger thresholds, i.e. the peak value

symmetrical to zero.

When scrolling through the events in the transient list, the record interval containing the trigger instant is always

displayed in the waveforms. The duration of said interval will depend on the time base set in the control panel to the

left of the oscillograms. At least the 20ms preceding the trigger instant will be displayed.

3.2.1 - Transient List

All the events which have been recorded during a Measurement Campaign are shown in a list in chronological order.

Each line corresponds to a different transient. The columns show the progressive number of the event, date and time

Page 20: Manual Enerscope-3S Studio - ICAR · The program can only operate in offline mode, i.e. it does not interact by communicating with the instrument. To transfer a Measurement Campaign,

Enerscope-3S Studio Man. - Rel. 1.0 EN

~ 20 ~

of the event with indication of the milliseconds of the trigger instant, as well as a series of six values indicating the

maximum voltage and current peaks detected during the phenomenon.

These values must not be confused with the peak value that caused the trigger event.

Click on the first column, i.e. the one with the progressive numbers of the transients, to select the desired event (a

small red arrow will appear beside the selected event). All other windows will be immediately synchronised with the

relevant information, including the control window, where the setup parameters are shown. Scroll through the list

using the keyboard (up and down arrow keys) and the scrolling tool found in the toolbar.

The records with information about the samples are saved in sequence. The indication of the current record may not

match the progressive number of the transient, especially in the case of events captured in Auto trigger mode.

3.3 - Capturing Inrush Current

This type of survey displays the load absorption at start-up, in particular for electrical engines, as these may cause

absorption peaks at start-up, before reaching operating speed.

As for the other types of campaigns, a main window is displayed showing all the instrument’s setup parameters.

The View Menu and toolbars are updated for this type of campaign. Only the recorder toolbar is now enabled.

The graph of the inrush current of the 4 channels - i.e. I1 (or Iaux), I2, I3, and In - is then displayed.

4 - Customising Windows & Colours

4.1 - Window Settings

The type and number of windows displayed can be customised. Users can add other windows to the default windows,

as well as replace one window with another.

To add windows, open the window(s) to be added, then select Window Menu Tile.

4.2 - Customising Colours

To change the default colours used for the graphs, right-click on any point of a graph or select Colours from the Options

Menu.

A window allowing users to select the colours of the different areas of the oscillogram - such as panel, trace, pen, etc.

- will be displayed.

Note: The colour customisation window shows the traces of the graph being configured, i.e. 1 to 4 traces, depending

on the case.

5 - Printing Documents

The software allows users to print - both with black&white and colour printers - all the

measurements and graphs described herein for filing and for preparing system analysis

reports.

Documents can be printed both in portrait and landscape orientation. A print preview of all documents can be viewed

before printing.

Printers are managed as in the Windows platform.

The print preview and print functions refer to the active window, i.e. the one on top, which can be identified by its

active title bar. Before printing, click on the desired window or select it in the Window Menu of the main menu.

Some examples of printed documents are shown below.
