1. GENERAL

1.1 Using this Manual

This manual contains specifications and instructions to properly install and maintain the Delta MCS-1400 power shelf. Component specifications and drawings and contained in this manual.

Included in this manual is the operation and maintenance of the New Smart Control & Supervisory Unit (NSCSU), ES-48V Switch Mode Rectifier (SMR), system status and alarms, troubleshooting and system maintenance.

Step by step procedures required for installation and turn-up are detailed. All equipment parameter settings, adjustments and confirmation as well as system monitoring, operations and maintenance procedures are included.

Warnings are printed in bold lettering and alert the installation or maintenance craftsperson of a potential hazard to either or the craftsperson if the warning advisement is not followed.

1.2 Safety Notice

Delta products are not liable for any hazards incurred by not following proper safety procedures, Installation, Operation and maintenance personnel should always follow these safety rules:

Do not install or remove any SMR with the AC breaker ON. The AC breaker must be switched to the OFF (0) position prior to inserting a module into a shelf to avoid any damage to the rectifier.

Before switching ON the system, the AC input frequency and voltage must be verified. AC breaker rating and type should be adequate and other environmental conditions as noted in the specifications should meet.

The system has passed stringent system testing prior to shipment. To avoid electrical shock, the MCS system requires a single ground point permanently connected to earth ground.

An AC breaker must be provided for adequate isolation between the system input and commercial AC main.

The environment should be dust free and controlled by an HV AC system. The area must be free of any flammable vapors or fluids.

To avoid electrical hazard, the covers must not be removed on any component including the NSCSU, MCS rectifier etc.

Circuit breakers must be replaced with approved circuit breakers, meeting the original design specification.

All AC connections must be made per the latest issue of the National Electrical Code and must also confirm to all local codes.

2. INTRODUCTION AND FEATURES

2.1 Introduction

Delta MCS 1400 power shelf is designed to meet the demands of today’s and tomorrow’s wireless and wire-line network applications. It combines a compact, modular design and intelligent power features.

A typical Delta MCS 1400 power shelf, consisting of compact rack enclosures, 1400W rectifier modules and related power distribution units, is under the control of New Smart Control and Supervisory Unit (NSCSU). All system functions and management can be operated via the user friendly LCD interface. Meanwhile, with the Delta power system management software, the remote power system management function is also available via internet, intranet or telephone line,

Delta's MCS 1400 power shelf employ state-of-the-art design to ensure high reliability and performance. All components pass stringent reliability testing. The MCS-1400 series power module is UL and cUL approved and manufactured in our modern ISO 9001 and TL 9000 certified facility.

Maintenance Bypass Switch

2.5 For Maintenance purpose system is having maintenance bypass switch inside the Class-B surge arrestor box. Upward position indicates that system is in OFF position & downward is to turn on the Switch.

4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Warning - Please read the following instructions carefully. Ignoring these instructions may result in a loss of life or a health hazard for users working with the equipment and/or in damage to the equipment itself. These safety instructions are an extension of any national laws governing health and safety at work and the applicable EN, DIN, SEV, VDE and CEI standards and any regulations of the statutory authorities. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any danger or damage resulting from incorrect operation or usage of the equipment, failure to observe the instructions in the user’s documentation and/or failure to observe the safety instructions.

4.1 General Instructions

No user replaceable or serviceable parts inside- In case of any service aspect please contact service provider. Operation of and work on the equipment or parts thereof may only be performed by professional persons (qualified technicians) with appropriate experience who have been successfully trained by the manufacturer/ distributor (= authorized person)

The weight of the components (specified on the front of the unit) requires that physically able-bodied persons be employed for installing / assembling the equipment or parts thereof.

If work on the equipment or parts thereof is necessary with the equipment under present voltage, another qualified technicians or a supervisor must be present in addition to the electrician performing the work. The supervisor should be capable of providing first aid in case of electrical hazard. Providing the electrician with an emergency switch or disconnection strap, so-called "dead man’s switch", is not sufficient protection.

Work on the equipment may only be carried out using insulated safety tools and appropriate protective clothing (shoes, gloves, safety spectacles, etc).

There is an increased risk of an accident and electrical hazard when working on compact equipment (different components mounted in a single cabinet, e.g. rectifier/inverter modules, DC distribution and battery connection), due to the close proximity of the various different components. Work should therefore be carried out with an extra attention to safety, and appropriate insulating covers over the live electrical parts must be provided for protection against accidental contact.

If the power supply equipment is not fitted with a disconnecting switch or equivalent device unit, for isolating it from the AC mains or any other hazardous voltage source, the operator of the power supply equipment is responsible for fitting the mains distribution board, battery system or other supplying equipment with appropriate disconnection switch conforming to the relevant regulations.

Removing or inserting components from or into the equipment may result in changes to the performance of the equipment. The operator is therefore responsible for the consequences of any change in the hardware configuration that are made without an agreement with the manufacturer or his local representative.

The operator of the equipment is responsible for ensuring that personnel concerned with the equipment (authorised persons) are provided with safety training when the equipment is installed or when starting their employment and at regular 6-monthly intervals thereafter.

The operator of the equipment is responsible for ensuring that the rooms in which the equipment is set up and in which the batteries are used are treated as electrical equipment rooms, which are only accessible to qualified personnel (authorised persons).

The operator of the equipment is responsible for ensuring that the equipment is installed in suitable rooms, if necessary with air-conditioning. If forced cooling (fan ventilation) is used, there must be adequate airflow in the room, as well as heating/cooling.

The units or individual parts of the equipment may only be opened by qualified employees (authorised persons) of the equipment operator, who have attended a special repair training course held by the manufacturer or his local representative.

The operator of the equipment is responsible for ensuring that the rectifier/ inverter/distributor rack is securely locked and not accessible to unauthorised persons.

Installation and dismantling of the equipment or parts thereof, as well as the laying of the connection cables may only be carried out by persons trained by the manufacturer/distributor (authorised persons).

The installation instructions and specifications in this user manual are a part of these safety instructions. The order of installation and the specified limit values must be adhered to in order to guarantee that the equipment is correctly installed and operated.

The environment should be dust free and controlled by an HV AC system. The area must be free of any flammable vapours or fluids.

4.2 Special Instructions

Before switching `ON` the system, the AC input frequency and voltage must be verified, AC break rating and type should be adequate, and other environmental conditions as noted in the specifications should meet.

Localised areas of high temperature (> 70 C) may occur within the rectifier/ inverter/distributor rack. Adequate precautions against accidental burns must be taken.

Fuses should only be gripped using the tools provided for this purpose (Load-break switch handles, etc.).

Ensure adequate insulation from ground potential (earth) when working on the rack or changing fuses.

The power system may have dual energy supply by means of primary and secondary energy sources, and operator is responsible to secure the proper precautions by separating or disconnecting the sources for maintenance or service purposes.

Some of the potentiometers for adjusting equipment components are mounted under the unit covers and can only be accessed through the ventilation slots of these components. Take care when making adjustments, and use appropriate tools (e.g. an insulated screwdriver for trimming), otherwise sensitive components may be damaged.

Only suitable measuring devices (e.g. high-impedance multimeter) may be connected to the voltage and current measurement sockets.

Incorrect operation of the equipment or parts thereof may alter the operating state of the system, trigger false alarms or discharge the batteries connected to the system. Ensure that the settings conform to the specifications, the system configuration and the limit values that you require.

Make sure that the voltage values for all components are set correctly. Incorrect voltage settings may lead to an increase in the battery voltage and the consequent danger of explosion.

Ensure that the alarm limit values (trigger thresholds) are set correctly. Incorrect settings may trigger false alarms and cause the rectifier/inverter modules to switch off.

All temporary manipulations of the equipment or parts thereof that are carried out (e.g. for test purposes) must be reset manually. Automatic reset facilities are not provided.

6. Local and Remote Monitoring & Control

6.1 Description

The Remote Site Monitoring software allows maintenance personnel to access the MCS 1400 single phase systems NSCSU without having to be in front of the power system. Using a window based PC and the RS232 interface port on the power systems NSCSU the personnel can gain access to the system.

6.2 System Requirements

RS 232/485 Cross Cable. (Configuration as per attached Drawing).

CD with the application Software (GUI).

Personnel computer.

6.3 Configuration and Monitoring

In order to provide user friendly RMS GUI configuration, a CD containing the software is provided along with the system.

1) Copy the GUI software from the attached CD.

2) Open the GUI file Remote site.

3) Now a screen (Remote Site) appears on the desktop. Select COMM Port 1 on the upper right corner of this screen and then the user is able to access the parameters as shown in the Fig Below.

The Remote Monitor System Screen displays a visual real time condition of how the system is functioning. This screen contains all of the information, which can be seen on the main page display.The indications listed on the screen include:

7.1 Description

The Switch Mode Rectifiers (SMR) modules are rated at 25 Amps at -48 VDC. The modular design provides the flexibility to configure and expand the system as the load demand increases. Each MCS-1400 module is hot swappable with front access for ease of maintenance without system shutdown providing uninterrupted service.

The MCS-1400 series module is active power factor corrected to great than 0.99 PF (THD5%) for maximum AC utilization. Each module is equipped with AC breakers located at the front of the module to allow for easy identification when maintenance is required.

8. SYSTEMS ALARM AND TROUBLE SHOOTING

8.1 AC Fail/AC High Voltage / AC Low Voltage Alarm Description.

There are three (3) AC alarm conditions that are monitored by the system: AC Fail, AC High Voltage and AC Low Voltage. AC fail occurs when AC current is not present at the AC Distribution box. AC high Voltage (ACH) is a factory set parameter and can be adjusted by setting parameter High Voltage Alarm (ACH) to the desired voltage. All three alarms result in the system shutting down rectifiers until either AC is restored, or the AC voltage returns to levels within the parameter threshold settings (AC High Voltage and AC Low Voltage).

8.1.1 AC Fail, AC Input High (ACH) and AC Input Low (ACL) Alarm Conditions.

8.1.1.1 AC Fail: Major Alarm

When the NSCSU senses the absence of AC current at the AC Distribution box located in the rear of the DC Distribution Cabinet, the NSCSU will initiate a major alarm and “AC DN” will be displayed on the main page. ACL and AC DN alarm is indicated on the NSCSU. Battery is in discharge status. The alarm will be re-set to normal condition when AC is restored. During an AC Fail condition, the NSCSU is powered by the reserve from batteries.

8.1.1.2 AC Input High (ACH): Minor Alarm -AC Input High Alarm

When the NSCSU senses the input AC Voltage exceeding parameter alarm, the NSCSU will initiate an AC High Alarm, displayed on the NSCSU. The system will shut down the rectifiers. The NSCSU will continue to monitor the AC input voltage. The ACH alarm will re-set to the normal operation when AC input voltage decreases within the threshold parameter setting. SMR restart after input voltage return to nominal line voltage range.

8.1.1.3 AC Voltage Low (ACL) Minor Alarm-AC Input Low Alarm

The AC Voltage Low Alarm occurs when the AC input voltage falls below the threshold set in parameter. When the ACL condition is sensed, an ACL alarm is displayed on the NSCSU. The NSCSU will shut down the rectifiers. The NSCSU will continue to monitor the AC input voltage. The ACL alarm will re-set to the normal operation when AC input voltage increases within the threshold parameter setting. SMR restart after input voltage return to nominal line voltage range.

8.1.2 AC Fail Trouble shooting

During an AC Fail condition, the CSU is powered by reserve batteries and the rectifiers are shut down. When AC is restored, observe the battery charge current. It may be necessary to decrease the current limit to the charge current range during equalize if a deep discharge situation has occurred.

8.1.3 AC High Voltage (ACH) Trouble shooting

Verify the AC input voltage at the AC service pane. If the AC input voltage is higher than the threshold setting, the NSCSU will take the rectifiers of line. The AC circuit breaker at the AC service panel should be tripped until the AC utility is repaired and the AC input is within input specifications.

Verify the AC distribution voltage is higher than the setting value. If not, the system will continue to operate and the NSCSU may be faulty. The NSCSU should be swapped with a spare; the High Voltage (HV1) parameter set to the desired high voltage threshold setting, and verified that the HV1 alarm is cleared. Follow established repair/return policy to have the faulty NSCSU repaired by Delta Products.Warning Do not increase the threshold setting past normal operating input

voltages. Operating rectifiers in a High Input Voltage condition can result in seriously damaging the rectifier modules.

8.2 DC Output Voltage High/Low (HV1/LV1)

8.2.1 DC Output Voltage High Alarm-HV-1 Minor Alarm.

This alarm condition exists when the DC output voltage is higher than the parameter alarm setting. The alarm will re-set to the normal condition when the voltage is decreased below the threshold parameter setting. The output voltage can be adjusted via the NSCSU.

8.2.2 DC Output Low Alarm-LV-1 Minor Alarm

This alarm condition exists when the DC output voltage is lower than the parameter alarm setting. The alarm will clear when the DC output voltage increases. The output voltage can be adjusted via the NSCSU.

8.2.3 DC Voltage High/Low Trouble Shooting

Verify the output of each rectifier. If the rectifier output is not within tolerance, swap the rectifier with a spare module, and return the faulty unit to Delta Products for repair. If the output of each rectifier is within tolerance, check the parameters to ensure the correct settings.

8.3 DC Circuit Breaker Trip Alarm

When a DC load circuit breaker is tripped, the NSCSU will go into alarm.

8.3.1 Circuit Breaker Fail Condition Trouble Shooting

If the circuit breaker continues to fail:

a. Check the DC branch load (fed by the DC circuit breaker) to ensure the circuit breaker is the correct size.

b. If the branch load exceeds the circuit breaker rating, the circuit breaker must be changed to a higher rating.

c. Swap with a spare circuit breaker with a higher rating.

8.4 Over-Temperature Alarm

8.4.1 Over-Temperature-Ambient

This alarm is generated when the threshold temperature set in parameter alarm setting TA is exceeded and also controls the Temperature Compensation Voltage Control. The NSCSU senses the temperature via sensor TA and generates an Ambient Over Temperature Alarm setting.

8.4.2 Over Temperature - Ambient Troubleshooting

1. Verify that the ambient temperature has exceeded the parameter setting by checking the thermostat reading in the hut or equipment room and comparing the reading to the NSCSU Reading.

2. The NSCSU will decrease the float/equalize voltage for each degree over the 25˚C or 77˚F threshold.

3. If the TA parameter setting has been exceeded, increase the air conditioning.

4. If the TA threshold is exceeded, it is recommended to turn off the AC Main feeding the Rectifiers until the ambient temperature has decreased below the threshold temperature.

5. If the sensor is defective, turn the Temperature Compensation off.

Warning Operating the system at excessive temperatures can damage the rectifiers.

8.4.3 Over Temperature - Battery Alarm

This alarm is generated when the threshold temperature set in parameter TB-1 or TB-2 (if equipped with 2 battery strings) is exceeded. The NSCSU senses the temperature via sensor TB-1 or TB-2 and generates a Battery Over Temperature Alarm-TB-1 or TB-2.

8.4.4 Over Temperature-Battery Troubleshooting

1. Check the ambient temperature and verify it is within the TA parameter threshold.

2. If the TA and TB-1 & 2 thresholds are not exceeded, check the thermostat reading in the room and comparing the reading to the NSCSU reading. If the TB-1 or TB-2 sensor is defective, replace the sensor.

Note! It is recommended that if the system is in the equalize mode, switch the status to float to reduce the battery temperature.

8.5 NSCSU Fail

8.5.1 Fail Status

During a NSCSU failure condition, the NSCSU fail LED will light, and the rectifiers status will change from equalize to float, or remain in the float condition.

8.5.2 Troubleshooting

1. Check the input fuse on the back of the NSCSU, replace if blown.

2. Check the DC input connectors for proper connections.

3. Replace with a spare and send the faulty unit to Delta Products for repair.

8.6 Rectifier Fail Alarm

When a rectifier fails, the alarm information is sent to the NSCSU and the rectifier is shut down. The rectifier should be swapped out with a spare unit and the faulty unit returned for repair. Refer to the section 10.2 for removing and replacing a rectifier.

Warning Do not open the rectifier module. There are no serviceable parts. Call for an RMA number for repair and return.

9. INSTALLATION

9.1 Tools RequiredThe following tools are recommended for the power shelf installation:

9.2 Preliminary Inspection

Prior to removing the system from the crate, note any damage to the crate. Remove the power shelf from the crate and inspect it for any dents or damage. If any damage is noted, contact the carrier immediately.

9.3 Shelf Mounting

Mount the rack of system with a distance no less than 12 inches from the rear of the rectifier shelf to a wall. This will provide adequate ventilation for the rectifiers. The front of the system should be clear of all obstruction and allow room for proper ventilation, installation and maintenance. The relay rack should be mounted to the superstructure and floor per customer provided equipment engineering drawings.

9.4 Module Installation

In order to minimize the weight of system, all rectifier modules can be removed from the rack and re-installed after the rack has been mounted.

Install rectifier modules into the shelf.

Warning Do not force the module into the slot. If it does not slide in and connect easily, remove and re-seat the unit.

Secure each rectifier module to the shelf by tightening the captive screw located at the right side front of the module.

9.5 Shelf Wiring

The system comes fully assembled and all the connections are made at the factory. There is no internal, shelf or module wiring required.

9.6 Frame Grounding

The frame ground must be connected to a permanent earth ground connection. Feed the frame ground lead through the knock out at the rear of the right hand side of the DC distribution cabinet and connect to the frame ground lug. Recommended Lead Wire: AWG#8

Warning Do not connect this terminal to AC power system neutral.

10. MAINTENANCE

10.1 Cleaning and Maintenance

10.1.1 General

Special maintenance is not necessary for this system, unless the system is being operated in a severely harsh environment (dusty environment). The front panels and the cover of the DC Distribution cabinet was treated with a special coating, do not use organic cleanser or volatile solvent or corrosion damage may occur. For daily cleaning, brush the dust from the cover and panel. If necessary, use a gentle cleanser or a lightly dampened lint free cloth to remove any dirt or smudges.

10.1.2 Periodic Maintenance

Periodic maintenance is not required for normal operation. If necessary, wipe remove dust from the front of the MCS 1400 using a lint free, soft cloth an gently wipe the front of the Distribution cabinet door, the NSCSU and rectifiers. If necessary, use a gentle detergent to clean.

Warning Do not use spray cleanser to clean the equipment. Using a spray cleanser directly on the equipment can result in serious equipment damage.

Check the DC Bus for heat discoloration. If the bus has any heat discoloration, notify to the Customer Service.

10.2 Removing and Replacing a Rectifier Module

10.2.1 Removing a Rectifier

Warning Do not touch the DC output Bus when pulling out the SMR module.

1. Loosen the captive retaining screws located on the right and bottom of the front panel.

2. Pull out the SMR module slowly from the shelf, using one hand to support the rear half of the SMR and remove the rectifier from the shelf.

Install the rectifier module, holding the handle with one hand and using the other to support the rear half of the rectifier module. Place the rectifier on the shelf making sure the rail is on the tack.

Warning Do not force the module into the slot. If it does not slide in and connect easily, remove and re-set the unit.

1. Lock the rectifier into position by screwing in the captive retaining screw located at the right and the bottom of the rectifier front panel.

2. On the front of the rectifier: Verify the Current Limit is set at the same value as the other rectifiers in the system.

3. Begin by accessing into the parameter menu. Turn off the mode of temperature compensation and Voltage compensation. Then the float and equalize voltage can start adjusting

10.3 Float Voltage Adjusting

Verify the required float voltage setting per the battery manufacturer specification. If the factory setting differs from the battery manufacturer recommended setting, all the rectifiers and the NSCSU Float Voltage parameter must be adjusted to the new setting. Use NSCSU to adjust the FLO voltage.

10.4 Equalize Voltage Adjusting

Verify the required equalize charge voltage setting per the battery manufacturer specification. If the factory setting differs from the battery manufacturer recommended setting, all the rectifiers and the NSCSU Equalize Voltage parameter must be adjusted to the new setting. Use NSCSU to adjust the EQU voltage.

10.5 Replacing a Rectifier Cooling Fan

Under a fan fail condition, the rectifier will automatically go into alarm and shut down. It is recommended that a maintenance craftsperson change the fans on-site.

1. Follow Rectifier Removal procedure,

2. Remove the front panel and screw.

3. Loosen and remove the four fan screws.

4. Remove the faulty fan from the rectifier.

5. Position the new fan on the rectifier.

Warning Ensure the fan is positioned correctly to avoid possible fan or rectifier damage.

6. Replace and tighten the fan mounting screws.

7. Plug the fan lead connector into the connector slot.
