Areas of application

The European standard EN 877 is valid for prefabri-cated parts of cast iron pipes for construction - nor-mally as non-pressure pipelines - of building draina-ge systems as well as connecting drains. The nominaldiameter range covers DN 40 to DN 600 inclusive. This standard contains requirements for material, dimensions and tolerances, mechanical features, composition, standard coatings for cast iron pipes, fittings and accessories. Further it contains functio-nal requirements for all prefabricated parts includingcouplings. It is valid for pipes, fittings and accesso-ries which are manufactured by casting process, nomatter which type, or from cast parts, and for thecorresponding couplings.Düker SML drainage pipe systems are in accor-dance with this standard and exceed its requi-rements by far in many respects. Also thedemands of DIN 19522 and ISO 6594 are sur-passed.

The material features

Düker drainage pipe systems are manufactured ofgrey cast iron GG according to EN 1561 - type atleast EN-GJL-150 (formerly GG 15 according to DIN1691) which means an iron and carbon alloy withhigh graphite content which is integrated in lamellaform and finely distributed within the metallic basecompound. This Düker-typical crystalline structuregives the material high strength, wear and tempera-ture resistance, excellent corrosion resistance (ascompared with steel), and a very high dampingcapacity. Düker SML drainage pipes distinguishthemselves by robustness, durability, fire-resistanceand silent operation - even without special insula-tion or soundproofing.

Planning and installation

Düker SML drainage pipe systems are - withoutexception - permitted for all ranges of application ofdrainage systems in buildings. Planning and installa-tion of the SML pipes have to follow EN 12056, thelocal rules and regulations as well as the Dükerinstallation and fixing instructions (parts 3 and 4 ofthis brochure).

SML coating

The SML drainage pipes are coated with a reddishbrown 40 µm thick base coat on the outside accor-ding to the current standard. On the inside, the pipesare provided with a permanent cross-linked epoxycoating which distinguishes itself by high resistanceagainst chemical and mechanical influences. The fea-tures of this high-quality coating go beyond therequirements of EN 877. This particularly protectsDüker SML drainage pipe systems against domesticeffluents which are becoming increasingly aggressivebecause of the new regulation that rain water andwaste water must be disposed of separately, whichmeans that pipe coatings are facing new challenges. The Düker hot permanent mould centrifugal castingprocess used in the production of our pipes guaran-tees a uniform, non-porous interior coating with fullycross-linked, elastic and 120 µm thick epoxy materi-al. It also makes for an extremely smooth interiorsurface. The expansion differences of epoxy / cast iron due tochanges of temperature are absorbed better. Thisprevents chipping of the coating when the pipes arecut.

Fittings

SML fittings are given an interior and exterior dipcoating with high proof cross-linked epoxy (layerthickness approx. 60 µm).

IZEG Information centre / GEG qualityassociation

Some non-European manufacturers destroy the quali-ty reputation of cast iron sewage pipe systems. Inorder to withstand this trend and to fulfil the increas-ing safety requirements of our partners in plumbing, trade, planning and authorities, the European castiron pipe industry as well as suppliers of accessoriesfounded the IZEG. IZEG and the integrated qualityassociation GEG award a RAL quality label to castiron drainage pipes and fittings that have passed, among others, the following tests surpassing therequirements of EN 877:

Düker Quality System

Düker was one of the first companies of the trade toachieve the ISO 9001 certification and was evenawarded the "Bavarian Quality Award" in 1999. Thisquality award encourages us to continue doing whatwe started decades ago: keeping the quality stan-dard of cast iron drainage pipes at a high level withcontinual new ideas, dependable system solutionsand first-class finish of our products.

SML drainage pipe systems and envi-ronmental protection

Grey cast iron - the material from which Düker SMLpipes are manufactured - is 100 % recyclable. Pipecuttings can be included in the recycling circlewithout any trouble of waste disposal, also becausethe coating is free of benzo(e)pyrene and otherenvironmentally dangerous chemicals.

Cost considerations

Cost comparisons between SML pipeline systems andalternative materials must not only compare the costof pipe per meter. An evaluation must also considerthe following advantages of SML:- Easy and fast installation with no specialists required;

normal plumber’s skills are sufficient.- No special equipment required.- No costly fire protection collars.- Lower fire insurance premiums.- Fewer brackets due to superior stability.- No thermal expansion sockets.- No calculation of deflection legs with anchored and

sliding fixings.- Excellent sound absorption, no overall noise insula-

tion or additional noise protection walls necessary.- High resistance to positive and negative pressure,

axial restraint up to 10 bar possible, therefore no need to change material in sensitive areas.

- Lower maintenance costs for damages by use or vandalism.

- Full recyclability means lower removal costs at the end of the lifetime of the building.

Page 9: Manual SML

9

Pipelines may not cross firewalls, staircase walls orother ceilings and walls that must be fireproof, unless a transmission of fire, water and heat is notto be expected.

European Fire Resistance Regulations

Fire resistance indicates how well and how long abuilding component can hold back the fire and pre-vent it from penetrating from one room to another.

The basic criteria are:

R load-bearing capacity (capacity to provide stabi-lity to the building)

E integrity (capacity to remain intact)

I insulation (capacity to maintain a low temperatureon the unexposed side of the building element)

A product fulfilling these basic criteria for 30 minuteswill be classified REI 30.

Pursuant to the relevant Italian regulations, the fireresistances of the various pipelines submitted toinspection by Düker Germany correspond to the fol-lowing fire resistance classifications:

pipeline 1 REI 63 RE 180pipeline 2 REI 180 RE 180pipeline 3 REI 180 RE 180pipeline 4 REI 180 RE 180pipeline 5 REI 139 RE 180

In a fire test carried out on 04 December 2003 in Italy by CSI S.p.A. Bollate (Milan), Düker SML pipeswith Rockwool mineral wool insulation reached the following results, certified by test report CSI1094RF of 27/02/2004:

FIRE PROTECTION

Page 10: Manual SML

FIRE PROTECTION

10

Smoke generation (criterion S)

If installed with couplings whose rubber gaskets arecompletely covered by stainless steel collars (e.g.Dükorapid®), the pipe system remains closed in caseof fire. Any smoke generated by heat effects on theinner coating remains in the pipeline and is thenevacuated through the ventilation openings over theroof.

For comparison: 10 kg of polyethylene (PE) or poly-propylene (PP) generate approx. 23.000 m3 of poiso-nous smoke consisting of carbon monoxide, carbondioxide and soot. With that quantity 100 large apart-ments with 100 m3 each can be filled with enoughsmoke to leave the inhabitants no chance of survi-val.*

* taken from Bernd Prümer "Brandschutz in derHaustechnik", Gentner Verlag

Length expansion (criterion R)

The length expansion coefficient of cast iron is only0.0105 mm/(m·K). In case of a temperature changeof 50 K and a pipeline length of 10 m the lengthexpansion is only 5.25 mm. This expansion is com-pensated by the normal couplings.

For comparison: A 10 m polyethylene pipe in thesame circumstances has a length expansion of 45 mm. Therefore special expansion compensatorsare required.

In addition to the basic criteria R, E and I, a numberof other safety properties can be evaluated, of whichwe will only consider S for smoke leakage.

Non-combustibility (criterion E)

Düker sewage pipes consist of grey cast iron withlamellar graphite and are certified to correspond toEN 877. Annex F of EN 877 says that "Cast iron pro-ducts in accordance with this European Standard arenon-flammable and non-combustible. When exposedto fire they will maintain their functional charac-teristics and integrity for several hours, i.e. theirwalls will remain impervious to flames and gasesand there will be no fracture, collapse or significantdeformation. The integrity of connections throughwalls and ceilings is maintained." Düker sewagepipe are also classified in building material class A1"non-combustible" as per German DIN 4102.

In order that the pipeline can be installed openly, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

- thickness of outer coating no more than 0.5 mm - minor combustible materials for joints and clamps

are admissible (rubber gaskets)- pipes must be fixed with metal plugs- possible insulations must be made of non-combu-

stible material

Combustion loads

With Düker sewage pipes it is not necessary to con-sider combustion loads – defined as the energyquantity emitted by a material by combustion. Innecessary gangways a maximum of 7 kWh/m used tobe allowed, but the latest German regulations forbidany combustion load in gangways and escape routes.

For comparison: polyethylene (PE) emits 12 kWh perkg, fuel oil 11.7 kWh per kg.

Page 11: Manual SML

FIRE PROTECTION

11

Fire resistance of wall or ceiling pass-throughs

In general, any openings must be kept as small aspossible. The opening remaining after pipe installa-tion must be closed with a non-flammable buildingmaterial.

In most cases it is not recommendable to simply usecement mortar or concrete as this causes noisetransmission to the wall.

We recommend to use mineral wool with a densityof 90 kg/m3 and a fusion temperature ≥ 1000 °C.Do not use combustible material.

The distance from the outer pipe edge to the wallopening should be:

- no more than 50 mm in case of closing with mineral wool

- no more than 15 mm in case of intumescent material

If a branch is required directly above the ceiling, werecommend to use branches with long spigot, whichfacilitate the application of the mineral wool. However, it is not forbidden to place a coupling inthe ceiling.

Heat transmission (criterion I)

When passing cast iron pipes through walls or cei-lings where a certain fire resistance duration is pre-scribed, the heat transmission through cast iron pipesmust be considered. This is particularly importantwhen combustible pipes are passed through the samewall or ceiling next to the cast iron pipe.

The German MLAR prescribes the following distan-ces, which we recommend to observe:

1. DÜKER pipes next to other non-combustible pipes. The minimum distance c between the pipes is theouter diameter of the larger pipe.

2. DÜKER pipes next to combustible pipes up to 32 mm outer diameter without continued insulation. The minimum distance c between the pipes is fivetimes the outer diameter of the combustible pipeand may not pass below the outer diameter of thecast iron pipe.

3. DÜKER pipes next to other pipes with continuedinsulation (prerogative for combustible pipes ofmore than 32 mm diameter). If the insulation iscombustible, the minimum distance a between thepipe insulations is 160 mm, if it is non-combustible,50 mm.

This also means that mixed installations are not tobe recommended. A Düker EK Fix or any other coup-ling for connection of plastic pipes is not admissiblenear the break-through.

Page 12: Manual SML

12

4. Only if the cast iron pipe is insulated as well inorder to reduce its heat transmission, the minimumdistance can be avoided. Certain solutions have beenapproved in Germany for this (with Dükorapid® /Rapid couplings only):

5. Düker has presented a new and faster solution forapproval: The Düker fire protection coupling BSV 90(see page 46). This coupling will also pass fire testsbased on the future EN 1366-3, which calls for testswith only short open pipe spigots – a scenario thatis not to be found in practice.

Inside the BSV coupling, the cast iron pipeline isinterrupted by a piece of plastic pipe. Around thepipe piece, there are several layers of intumescentmaterial, which increases its volume enormouslywhen heated.

In case of a fire, the heat coming from the cast ironpipelines or from outside melts away the plastic pipepiece and makes the intumescent material swell sothe pipe diameter is closed. The intumescent materi-al gives thermal insulation – therefore preventsexcessive heat transmission – and prevents anychimney effects.

13

Annex F of EN 877 says: "Cast iron pipe systems dueto their high mass per unit area of their pipe wallsas well as the joint design characteristics provideconsiderable noise reduction benefits when evacu-ating waste water within buildings. As a rule additio-nal protection is therefore not required."

The noise reduction is also caused by the specialstructure of the material grey cast iron with lamellargraphite: Sound is refracted at the graphite lamellaeand practically runs itself out of energy in the mate-rial.

In order to prevent sound transmission throughsolids, contact to the masonry should be avoided:

- the pipe system should not touch walls or ceilingsat any point. Break-throughs should be closed withnon-combustible mineral wool.

- fixing material should be equipped with rubberinserts, which must not be pressed too firmly to thepipe when closing the clamp.

- in very sensitive areas it may be advisable to usespecial noise-damping fixing clamps

- in vertical pipes, down pipe supports should not bespaced too far from each other in order to avoid toohigh pressure on the rubber ring.

The water flow in the pipes must be eased toreduce flow noises:

- transition from a down pipe of a height of 10 m ormore to a horizontal pipe should be carried outusing a bend with steadying distance

- connection of a down pipe to a horizontal linemust be carried out with 45° branch and 45° bend

- connection of a horizontal pipe to a down pipeshould be carried out with 88° branch with 45°access angle

The actual noise level depends largely on correctinstallation, but also on the quantity of water andon the weight per m2 of walls and ceilings.

Tests and certificates

As certified by certificate No. P-BA 443/1995 ofFraunhofer Institute, Düker cast iron pipes reached anoise level of 19.9 dB(A) in the room diagonallyacross from the pipeline. This was measured withwalls of 220 kg/m2 and a water volume of 4.0 l/s.

Fraunhofer test assembly

Standard noise protection (30 db(A) in rooms inneed of noise protection, as per German regulations)should be no problem for correctly installed SMLpipes. In order to observe elevated sound dampingrequirements (27 or even 24 db(A) as per Germanregulations) the whole building structure should bechecked. However, cast iron sewage pipes are at pre-sent the sewage pipes best-suited for noise-damping.

As per German DIN 1986, turns ofbase and collecting pipes may only becarried out with pre-manufacturedbends. Each single bend may onlyhave 45°.

Normally, two bends 45° must beinstalled for this case. With the doublebend, one coupling is no longer neces-sary and installation is simplified.Furthermore, this fitting offers thepossibility of fixing a bracket in themiddle.

The bend is also suitable for transitionfrom a down pipe to a horizontal pipeand vice versa.

Bends with 250 mm spigots can bereduced by the K-dimension at themost. This allows optimum adaptationof the pipes to the solidium. A redu-cing quotient of 1:1.5 can be used insite practice for 45° bends. Thismeans: for a decrease of the distancedimensions A and L by 1 cm, the dia-gonally running longer spigot is to be

shortened by 1.5 cm. In the abovechart, 5 mm were added for thedistance of the coupling. Because ofthe simple calculation method wedispense with the illustration of thethree further combination possibilitiesof these bends (long spigots withlong, short with short or one long spi-got above).

Due to cut-back possibilities, even thedeviation made of 2 SML bends 45°with 250 mm spigots shown hereallows good adaptation of the pipesto the solidium. Reducing quotient asin the previous example 1:1.5. Thisalso is only one example out of 4 dif-ferent combination possibilities. Thesecombinations equal a hydraulicallyfavourable and installation-friendly

pipe direction with all deviations: ver-tical-horizontal, horizontal-verticaland horizontal-horizontal. The overalllengths ”L” can also be lessened bycutting back the long supplying ordraining spigots.

The reducing quotient 1:1.5 in sitepraxis is also permitted here. Whendecreasing the distances A and B by

1 cm (both change at the same time),the bend must be cut back by 1.5 cm.

In this case, the reducing quotient is1:1. The distance A changes identicallyto the reduction of the bend.

Dimensional tolerances for distance Bwhich theoretically result from thedescent are unimportant for installa-tion practice.

Combination examplesbranch 88° - bend 88°

As per German DIN 1986, special lay-ing arrangements are necessary forwaste water down pipes which runthrough more than 4 storeys if change

of direction takes place due to the thusdeveloping pressure ratio. This makes itnecessary to use a bypass with 135°.

Important note on 70° branches:As per German DIN 1986, for connection ofhorizontal pipes up to DN 70 to down pipes, branches of 88° are to be used. This is toprevent underpressure in the connectingpipes. SML branches 88° with an accessangle of 45° also allow to connect largerdiameters from DN 100 up to the down

pipe. This is space-saving and guaranteesconnecting pipes without negative pressure. Therefore 70° branches are no longer requi-red and are no longer contained in GermanDIN 19522. As 70° branches are howeverstill on demand, we sell a reduced range of70° branches until further notice.

The adapter with seal flange can be used forwall crossings of cast iron sewage pipeswhich depend upon water and gas imperme-ability, e.g. in- outer walls- floor plate- basement waterproofing and- reverse flat roof or similar. These SML pipes with wall flange are classi-fied as obsolete models, as SML pipes are notsuitable for soil installation as per EN 877.These items are available as TML fittings. The installation example shows a wallpassthrough with two SVE couplings on theouter wall side so that the floor movementscan be absorbed without any disadvantagesto the pipelines.

Installation notes for WC connectors

In general: When connecting WC connec-tors to down pipes we recommend SMLbranches 88° with 45° access anglewhich offer the best draining conditions.

WC connectors should be insertedinto the down pipes so that the diffe-rence in height between the waterlevel of the WC siphon and the baseof the connecting pipe at the junctioninto the down pipe is at least the DN(100 mm for DN 100). Please alwaysnote this rule when connecting lava-tories with horizontal outlets to thewall.

As per current state of the art, standingWCs are only supplied with vertical orhorizontal outlet. Plastic WC connectingpieces Ø 110 mm with sealing lips orcompression connections are used for joi-ning the WC outlet to the cast iron (bend22°, 45° and 90° as well as straight con-necting pieces).

Connection examples standing WC

1. Standing WC with hidden vertical out-let. Connection to a cast iron WC connec-tion bend with a plastic WC connectionpiece.

2. Standing WC with horizontal outlet.Connection to a cast iron WC connectionbend with a plastic WC connection bend90°.

3. Standing WC with horizontal outlet.Wall connection to a cast iron WC branch88° in a down pipe. The difference inheight of 100 mm between the waterlevel of the WC odour trap and the baseof the connecting pipe necessary in thiscase is achieved by putting two plasticconnecting pipes 45° into one another. The normal SML branch DN 100 88° withDüker-Fix connection can be used for wallconnection instead of the WC branch.

4. Standing WC with horizontal exit. Wallconnection on the side with the downpipe. The necessary difference in height inthe connecting pipe is achieved by a castiron WC bend which shows an offset of110 mm. The WC with a straight plasticWC connection piece is connected to thisbend.

5. Connection detail: Plastic WC connec-tion piece, cast iron WC connection bendwith special socket and rubber seal.

6. Wall WC connection with cast iron WCconnection bend and plastic WC connec-tion pieces.

7. Wall WC connection with cast iron WCconnection bend, a SML bend 88° withspigot and a plastic WC connection piece.

8. Standing WC with 4.5 or 6 l flush tankwith plastic bend DN 90, EK-Düker-Fixcoupling DN 80 and branch 45° DN 80.Both horizontal and down pipe are also inDN 80. Attention: this solution is notapproved in all countries. If DN 80 castiron pipes are not admissible for toiletdrainage in your country, we recommendto connect the DN 90 plastic bend to aDN 100 cast iron branch via a transitioncoupling by Mücher (www.muecher.com).

Wall WC connections are carried out byjoining straight plastic WC connectionpieces Ø 110 mm and sealing lips to castiron WC connection pieces with specialsocket and sealing ring.

The connection may not be carried outdirectly to the down pipe, but only viabends or bend combinations which consi-der the difference in height of at least100 mm.

The cast iron WC connection bends whichshow an offset of 110 mm and can beconnected (almost) horizontally to a SMLbranch 88° guarantee an optimum ofdraining conditions. The simple WC con-nection bends should only be used whenthe given difference in height is reacheddue to the arrangement of the connectingpipe (refer to installation example no. 7).The simple WC double socket connectorfor the double-sided connection of wallWC is only intended for vertical arrange-ment since otherwise washing-ins fromboth sides would occur.

03 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

54

Page 55: Manual SML

Requirements as per EN 12056Waste water and ventilation pipelinesare on principle sloping pipelineswithout interior pressure. However it isnot impossible for pressure to developin the pipelines under certain circum-stances. Regarding pressure tightness,EN 12056 says generally:

EN 12056-1, Jan. 01, pt. 5.4.2 waterand gas tightness:Drainage systems shall be water and gastight against the operational pressures.Pipework systems installed inside build-ings shall not release vapours and foulair into the building.

Furthermore EN 12056-5, pt. 6.3fixing and supporting: Pipelines withjoints, which allow longitudinal move-ment, shall be fixed and/or supportedin such a way as to ensure that duringservice the joint cannot become uninten-tionally disconnected. Reaction forcesshall be considered.

EN 877 – requirements on the pro-ductToday requirements as to the tightnessof a system are fixed in the productstandards. For Düker cast iron drainagepipe systems the relevant standard isEN 877. For pipelines up to DN 200inside of buildings, the test require-ment is water tightness up to 5 bar. However, this does not mean that allcouplings can be used for pressures upto 5 bar. The reason is that the testsare carried out in a fixed test arrange-ment, without axial forces acting onthe coupling.

Waste water above 0.5 bar in theback water area- all Düker couplings are to be secured

with corresponding grip collars- waste water pipelines connected to a

mixed water sewer must also besecured with grip collars

55

Mounting and Installation instructions for Düker couplings

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 03

For the application it is important toknow up to what pressure the couplingis thrust-resistant (resistant to axialforces) or what measures can be takento compensate for axial forces, e.g.fixings, grip collars, abutments etc.

The table on page 53 gives you thenecessary data.

Installation instructions and admis-sible pressure loads on Düker SMLcouplings Safe fixing or thrust-resistant couplingsare particularly important for wastewa-ter pipelines that can be subject to ahigher interior pressure than 0.5 bar,e.g.

1. pipes in back water areas,2. rain water pipes within buildings,3. waste water pipes which runthrough more than one basementwithout further outlet,4. pressure pipelines at waste waterpumps.

Particularly on pipelines below theback water level there can be pressuresduring use, e.g. a backflow from thecanal, which can make the pipe couplingsslip. Therefore pipelines below the backwater level must be treated as follows:

Waste water up to 0.5 bar in theback water area- no additional measures on Düker

Page 56: Manual SML

bar pressure load is that when thepump is switched off, there are oftenpressure peaks that can be much higherthan the normal pump pressure. In order to reduce these pressure peaks,it is recommendable to have floatingbackflow preventers with a counterweight available from suppliers of wastewater pumps. On principle it is necessary to havecompensators in order to prevent thewaste water pump's vibrations from

being transmitted onto the pressurepipe. The fixings must be carried out inaccordance with the Düker instructions.Pipe clamps should be mounted eitherdirect to the wall or ceiling or in caseof larger distances onto correspondingrails or supports. The clamps must befixed with M16 rods.

The installation of pipelines must be inaccordance with the Düker fixing andinstallation guidelines.

03 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

56

Gravity drainage rain water pipelinesEN 12056-3, pt. 7.6.4 says: Internalrainwater pipes shall be able to with-stand the head of water likely to occurin the event of a blockage.Resistance to a possible obstruction ofa rain water, collective or down pipeand therefore pressure loads corre-sponding to the height of the buildingis a new requirement. A backflow up tothe upper building edge is still anexception. According to our experienceit is sufficient to secure pipelines belowthe back water level with grip collars.Down pipes above the back water areanormally do not need securing withgrip collars. In vertical rain water pipesthat are open above, the water columncannot exert axial forces as long as thepipes are secured against a possiblesideways movement. However, changesof direction must be secured with gripcollars.Collection and connection pipelinesbelow the roof need not be securedwith grip collars. If special information for high-risersshould be required, please ask for ourTechnical Specifications waste water orrain water in highrisers.

Pressure pipelines at waste waterpumpsPressure pipelines can be made ofDüker cast iron drainage pipes and fittings with Rapid couplings and Kombigrip collars up to DN 100. As an alter-native Connect-G couplings DN 50 –400 can be used. The admissible pres-sure load is max. 10 bar in both cases. The reason for the assumption of 10

Installation instructions

1. The claw segments must evenly wraparound the pipe couplings. Thereforescrew the segments together loosely atfirst and watch out that the claw insertsdo not touch the metal collar of the coupling.

2. Then alternately crosswise tighten thescrews or nuts, so that the fastening partsare drawn together parallel and with thesame distances. Adhere to the torquesstated in the table for each screw, even ifthe fastening parts already touch at infe-rior torques.

* important: do not forget to insert the washers under the screw heads and nuts!

The axial force resistance necessary forSML pipes and fittings is obtained by theadded protection of the coupling with agrip collar. These security collars with axial restrainttake up the reaction forces which mayoccur at an internal pressure load of up to10 bar (see table) = 100 m water column. This means: the SML pipes and fittingswhich are connected with a coupling andadditionally with a grip collar are protec-ted against separation due to internalpressure without need of a special fasten-ing to the solidium at the connections. If pressures up to 0.5 bar are to be expec-ted, it is sufficient to protect the couplingat changes of direction, e.g. with a gripcollar, or to use Rapid couplings.

If pressures of more than 0.5 bar are tobe expected, all Rapid, CV and CE cou-plings in the pressure-stressed areas areto be secured with grip collars unless thepipe components are otherwise securedaxially force-locked.

Push-in coupling for undergroundpipes. Double socket in brown-coloured polypropylene-CO withtwo sealing lips in NR-SBR.

Installation instruction

1.Make sure that the sealing ringscompletely lie in the bead evenly

2.Clean pipes and fittings at the con-nection areas

3.Paint the ends of the pipes with alubricant for elastomere seals (soap

solution and dishwashing detergents butno oil or grease)

Multiquick coupling

Connection possibilitiesDüker SML pipes and fittings DN 100 to inherently stableother materials with an exteriordiameter of 72 up to 110 mm.

Düker SML pipes and fittings DN 100 to cast iron socket pipesDN 100 with an exterior diame-ter up to 115 mm. The couplingis delivered with two identicalworm thread clamps, which areboth adequate for the large dia-meter tolerance.

Push the open end of the Multiquickcoupling over the cast iron pipe end andposition the worm thread clamp in thegroove intended for it.Then tighten the worm thread clamp with-out displacing it. Use a knife to cut openthe closed side or to cut the couplingback according to the outer diameter ofthe connecting pipe. Cut the coupling infront of the step to the required diameter.

Watch out for a flawless and clean seal-ing zone on the pipes or fittings. Paintlumps or mortar must be removed com-pletely with sand paper. The worm threadclamps must be tightened exclusively byhand with a screw driver in order to avoiddamages to the Multiquick coupling.

Attention! The connecting pipe must be fixed inorder to avoid slipping due to internalpressure.

Now slide the second worm thread clampover the connecting pipe, push the pipeinto the Multiquick coupling and tightenthe worm thread clamp in the intendedposition.

FIXINGS 04

On principle, cast iron drainagepipes can be imbedded in concrete. The cast iron expansion coefficientpractically corresponds to that ofconcrete. As concrete passivatesiron, no special protection againstcorrosion is necessary for SMLpipelines as well as couplings. Thestandard single screw or twinscrew couplings can be used. Thepipes must be surrounded by 5 cmconcrete all around. When imbed-ding the pipeline in concrete andduring prior pressure testing of thepipeline, considerable forces mayoccur. In addition, when imbeddingin base plates usually only littledeclivity is available and thereforethe pipeline must be perfectlyadjusted. The arising forces (whichwould be the weight including thewater filling) should be taken inwith brackets and transferred tothe lower concrete, soil or theintended reinforcement. Use ofthreaded rods simplifies the arran-gement of the usually short des-cent. The pipeline will tend to floatto the surface when pouring inconcrete. Therefore it must besecured with brackets. We recom-mend to fill the pipeline withwater before imbedding it in con-crete. If SML pipelines are imbed-ded in waterproof concrete bot-toms, it is usually expected thatthe concrete must surround thepipe all around with 20 cm. Ifmany fittings are strung togetherand therefore bracket fastening isnot possible, then grip collars willhave to be used.

Imbedding cast iron pipes in concrete

Haunch in a concrete slab

Expansion gap

Imbedding SML main pipelinesin the concrete bottom isrecommended for:

1. high groundwater level.Advantage:

– leading pipes through waterproof floor plates is reduced.

– the pipeline itself is protected against any possibly aggressive groundwater.

2. non-bearing ground.Advantage:

– not having to carry out the necessary floor exchange or floor improvement and saving costly constructions for fastening of the pipelines below the floor plate.

If the thickness of the concreteslab is insufficient for installingthe pipeline, the concrete slabmust be reinforced at this pointwith a concrete haunch.

Expansion gapIn order to avoid any differences insettling, joints made up of pipecuttings (0.5 - 1.0 m) are arrangedat the expansion gaps. These pipecuttings are placed movable withhelp of a pipe lining or a polystyre-ne casing.According to EN 877, the permittedangling of SML couplings for thenominal widths is approximately:up to DN 200 3 cm/m DN 250 - 500 1.5 cm/m overalllength.

A predetermined breaking point(notched or cut through) is to beadded to the pipe lining where theexpansion gap is. Trickling of con-crete into the cut-through pipelining should be avoided by sealingwith adhesive tape. It should alsobe sufficiently fastened in order toavoid slipping.

FIXINGS 04

General rules:The distances of the fixings shouldbe even and should not exceed alength of 2 m. 2 to 3 m long pipesshould be fixed twice - short pipes, according to the nominal width (orpipe weight) should be fixed onceor twice. Fixing is to be carried outin regular distances between thecouplings whereas the distancebefore and after each couplingshould not be larger than 0.75 m.

Horizontal pipes must be secure-ly fastened at all changes ofdirection and branches. Pipeswhich are pendant-fixed are to besecured against any type of move-ment in distances of 10 to 15 m with special fixed-point hol-ding devices. This guarantees anexcellent directional stability andavoids pushing out of the planneddirection by other subassemblies.

Down pipes are also to be fas-tened at a maximum distance of 2 m. If a storey is 2.50 m high, then fastening is needed twice perstorey, among that once directly atall branches eventually installed.

Brackets Use the customary pipebrackets with the correspondingfastening elements and supports. We recommend brackets withthreaded connections M12 for SMLpipes DN 50 to 150 - possibly M 8for SML pipes up to DN 100. Rainwater pipes and SML pipes underpressure should be fastened withbrackets with threaded rods M 16.It might be useful to consult themanufacturer of pipe fixings.

Fixing SML pipes

SML down pipe supports shouldbe fastened as close to the wall aspossible in order to avoid largebending moment to the brackets.Adequate supports with bracketsshould be used for larger wall dis-tances.

Down pipe supports must carry theweight of the down pipe andshould be fastened at the lowestpossible point. They can carry asmuch vertical length as the wallcan carry and the plugs can trans-mit to the wall. After this height, afurther down pipe support is to bearranged.

In general we recommend to installa down pipe support in down pipesof DN 100 or larger above thebasement ceiling, and furtherdown pipe supports in intervals of5 storeys.

SML pipes under pressure Wastewater pipes without thrust-resis-tant couplings must be securedagainst separation or slipping fromthe axis if internal pressure loadsare to be expected. The demandedaxial restraint can be obtained bythrust-resistant grip collars (seetable on page 53).

Aquaperfect® Siphonic flat roof drainage

Differences to gravity drainageIn a normal gravity roof drainage, the rain water is drained to thepublic sewage through partly filledpipelines. The filling level of thesepipelines is generally at a maximumof 70% in order to ensure air circu-lation and pressure-free drainage.

In the Aquaperfect® siphonic system, starting at a certain rain waterquantity (calculation rainfall quan-tity), the pipeline works without airand with negative pressure. Theintake of air is avoided by an airsieve in the roof drain, which pre-vents the forming of a vortex(Coriolis force).

Advantages and applicationThe collection lines in the Aqua-perfect® siphonic system are instal-led without slope and thereforesave space below the roof construc-tion. Nevertheless, the elevatedflow velocities ensure a good self-cleaning effect. Smaller nominalwidths, inferior material require-ments and the avoidance of pipetrenches and base pipelines savecost and installation time.

Cast iron distinguishes itself by alow thermal expansion coefficientand does not add combustion loadsto the building. Very important isthe resistance to high negativepressure in the pipe, so it is notnecessary to over-dimension thepipelines.

71

AQUAPERFECT 04

The Aquaperfect® siphonic systemought to be considered in the follo-wing cases: large roof areas, min. 150 m2 per

drain a difference in height of at least

4.2 m between the roof and theback water level

 limited installation space belowthe ceiling

 long collection pipelines

StandardsThe planning and execution ofsiphonic systems is based on: EN 12056-3 (Layout and calcula-

tionn of roof drainage) DIN 1986-100 (German supple-

ment to EN 12056) VDI 3806 (German regulation for

siphonic roof drainage) EN 1253 (roof drains)

FunctioningThe pressure height corresponds tothe difference in height betweenthe roof surface and the back waterlevel (street level). Contrary to thisforce acts the pressure loss causedby pipe friction and the individualpressure resistance of the pipelinecomponents. At the zero point, bothforces cancel each other out, herethe negative pressure converts to apositive pressure. After a relaxationlength, the drainage has to trans-form into a gravity drainage at theback water level or in some casesabove that level. The strongest negative pressure isnormally to be found at the so-calledcritical point, the turning of the ho-rizontal collection pipe into the downpipe. The negative pressure mayamount to a maximum of -900 mbar. The flow velocity in the negative

pressure area should be at least 0.7 m/s, whereas it may not surpass2.5 m/s in the relaxation area. The drainage volume of the singleroof drains ought to be practicallyidentical within tight tolerances inorder to avoid flow breaks, whichwould lead to delays in reachingthe full flow. The calculation rainfall quantity isto be defined based on local statis-tical values. For economical reasonsand in order to ensure the self-cleansing effect, the full flow calcula-tion is based on the highest rainfallquantity during five minutes whichfalls statistically within a period oftwo years (e.g. 300 l /(s·ha)).The highest five-minutes rainfallquantity which is to be expectedstatistically within a period of 100years – the so-called century rain(e.g. 600 l/(s·ha)) – cannot be drainedthrough the siphonic pipeline sys-tem and might endanger the flatroof construction due to its weight. In case of flat roofs in light-weightconstruction, emergency drains mustbe installed for this contingency inany case. For other roof construc-tions this must be examined ineach case. The drainage is done either by side drains over the facade,or with roof drains with height ex-tensions which allow for the cor-responding water level on the roofand dispose of a separate pipelinesystem. The water will be drainedto surfaces near the building thatcan be flooded without danger.

CalculationThe pressure ratio, flow velocitiesand drainage volumes must be cal-culated for each pipeline sectionand for each drain separately and

then adjusted to the requirements.A calculation by hand is possibleusing among other things theBernoulli equation. However, thiscalculating work is time-consuming,error-prone and troublesome: if therequired values are not reached, the pipeline must be changed andthe calculation must be repeated, ifnecessary several times.Larger building projects practicallyhave to be planned with an appro-priate computer software. TheAquaperfect® partners – Düker andAco Passavant – offer you the ser-vice of planning and calculatingsiphonic systems for specific buil-ding projects. The specifier receives: pipeline section table and

complete hydraulic calculation list of materials pipeline drawing specifying text

Data required for the calculation horizontal sections sections detail of roof construction and

insulation roof view with notation of the

low-level points for drainage position of the back water level position of the connection points

to the gravity system (base orcollection pipes) and connectiondiameters

Calculation rainfall quantity androof material calculation value

position of emergency drains effective drainage height, con-

sidering the admissible loads onthe roof surface

In case of constructional modifica-tions, the siphonic system must bere-calculated!

General rules for planningThe following hints make planningeasier: The pipeline nets ought to be

symmetrical where possible The acceleration line ought to be

at least 0.4 m The connection pipeline must be

sufficiently long and be connectedhorizontally to the collection pipe

The overall length of the longestflow distance (from the roofdrain to the base pipeline) shouldbe no more than ten times theheight of the down pipe, but inany case no more than 100 m.

The roof surface per down pipeshould be no more than 5000 m2.

The distance between two drainsshould not surpass 20 m.

Roof surfaces with a height dif-ference of more than 1 m or withdifferent roof material valuesshould not be connected to thesame down pipe.

Rules for fixing and installingThe installation must follow EN 12056part 1, paragraph 5.4.2, part 3,paragraph 7.6.2 as well as GermanDIN 1986 part 100, section 9.2.On principle, the pipeline directions, diameters and lengths stated in thespecifications must be observed, asotherwise the calculated pressuresand volumes will not be reached. The material type must be observedas other materials differ regardingpressure loss and reaction to nega-tive pressure. A minimum of 6 m ofthe gravity drainage must also beinstalled in cast iron material.

The pipelines in the negative pres-sure area can be installed withoutslope.

FittingsAt branchings, branches with 45°angles must be used, for turns bendswith 45°, or double bends or bendswith steadying distance. Only atthe end of the acceleration line(below the roof drain), 88° bendsare used.

CouplingsOn principle Rapid couplings shouldbe used at all connections. In the area of negative pressure, allturns, branchings, reductions andthe complete acceleration line mustbe secured with grip collars. In the area of positive pressure, allcouplings must be secured withgrip collars.Where the gravity drainage starts,on a length of 6 m all changes ofdirection are to be secured withgrip collars. In case of down pipesof more than 30 m height, thebends must be secured in any case.

FixingsThe basic rules of page 68/69 areto be observed. Fixed-point devicesare to be installed with an inbetweendistance of no more than 12 m (dis-tance to the ceiling < 0.5 m) or 6 m(distance to the ceiling 0.5 – 1 m).The fixed points can be executedwith threaded rods at an angle ofat least 30° to the vertical fixing,or with consoles.

Pipelines with risk of watercondensationPipelines that can be subject tocondensation or frost must be in-sulated accordingly. We recommendusing the preinsulated compoundpipe system VML.

Start-off and maintenanceAfter installation the roof surface isto be cleaned thoroughly. If considerable dirt accumulationon the roof surface is to beexpected later on, it is recommend-able to use gravel as a filter layer.Unless the gravel is used on thewhole roof, a gravel edge with awidth of 0.5 m should be appliedaround the roof drain.A maintenance contract coveringthe removal of dirt, plant growthand dead leaves and the check ofthe drain components is recommend-able.
