welcome

Jim WilliamsPresident and CEOHabitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County

Dear Volunteers,

We are thrilled and humbled that you have chosen to join us in building 6 homes and a neighborhood park this week. Our hope is that you will have fun, experience the satisfaction of seeing the tangible results of your hard work and feel a personal connection to each of the families.

You have likely read in the news about skyrocketing construction costs and extraordinary increases in home appraisals across the country. All that means is that families need the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program more than ever!

This week you will hear the phrase "Cost of Home" which is a reference to Habitat's efforts to bring awareness to the issue of housing affordability. We hope to make you more aware of local, state and federal housing affordability issues so , together, we can make a momentous impact on our community.

Thank you again for building with us. It's going to be a great week!

welcome

Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County

Inspired by the mission of Habitat for Humanity International, a group of local leaders formed the St. Joseph County affiliate in 1987. Since those humble beginnings, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County has grown to become one of the leading affiliates in the country and has provided over 637 housing solutions for residents in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

In recognition of the significant work they have done over the past 34 years, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County has received Habitat Indiana’s Affiliate of the Year Award, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s Leighton Award for Nonprofit Excellence, and Habitat for Humanity International’s Affiliate of Distinction Award. And in 2018 they hosted the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries.

Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.

Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

about us

ne in 4 Americans spend more than 50 percent of their pre-tax income on housing, which leaves precious little for necessities like food, transportation and medical care.

Since 2001, the number of families living in poverty in Indiana has nearly doubled. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 17 percent of people living in St. Joseph County and 27 percent of people in South Bend live in poverty. For these low-income families, purchasing a home with a traditional mortgage is nearly impossible. Most are relegated to renting substandard apartments or houses and spending more than a third of their income just on housing.

There are over 100,000 households in St. Joseph County, and over 31,000 are renters. Forty percent of these renters pay more than a third of their income toward housing and are considered “rent-overburdened.” These households are the families who need the Habitat program if they are ever going to realize their dream of homeownership.

Most Habitat families have no other way to become homeowners. These families work hard for their homes — putting in hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” — and pay an affordable mortgage.

This is Erika and her children. You will be helping us build their home this week.

South Bendand Mishawaka

South BendSouth Bend is a growing city located on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from which it derives its name. It is the largest city in the county, with just over 100,000 residents. The highly regarded University of Notre Dame is located just to the north and is an integral contributor to the region’s economy.

The city offers a wealth of dining, culture and entertainment options. Four Winds Field is the host to the regional Chicago Cubs affiliate the South Bend Cubs.

We encourage all volunteers to explore what South Bend has to offer.

MishawakaMishawaka is a growing commercial city in Northern Indiana, located next to South Bend. Mishawaka, the Princess City, lies nestled along the meandering path of the St. Joseph River. Population growth, business expansion and record-breaking new construction tell us that people want to live, work, raise their families and retire in Mishawaka. Community pride is an essential part of life in the Princess City.

Mishawaka has consistently grown in population, capital investment and assessed value for several years. Mishawaka is also home to Bethel College, a beautiful system of parks, and myriad cultural opportunities.

Mishawaka is led by Mayor Dave Wood, a longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer. He has led the city since 2010 and was thrilled to host the 2018 Carter Work Project. Mayor Wood has worked on multiple Carter Work Projects in the past.
