letters to the editor •..

Sir: I am interested in VFO, Bigfoot, Monsters,

Oddities, Abnormalitis, Psychic Phenomna, P Prehistoric Survivals, etc, and think that some of thea •ay be interconnected in some way. For instance, Canadian researchers have produced 4-foot high chickens by ensonifying embryos for a brief pefiod. I lfould like to correspontl with anyone else interested in any aspect of any of .these subjects.

If enugh people like the idea, I could put out a miaeo letterzine so all could read the 1etters and coament. It would cost only letter and postage each issue.

Finally, I would like to boy a small piece of land, 10 acres would be enough, in the northern California monster country, as near to the center of occurances as pos sible, and build a s small cabin and stay there until I get pictures and proof. I have a few things, but not enough. Any friends would be welcome to come and camp there as long as they need while they look. If anyone knows of such a place, or can suggest where it should be, please write.

concerning the UFO phenomenon. The U.S. Air Force released t-he following data for UFOs sighted between 1960 and 1966:

Year 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965. 1966

Total .Sightins

Unidentified 14 13 15 14 19 16 13

Since 1947 there have been a total of 11 000 UFOs sighted in . the skies over the eath. Of these, 10,344·· ·bave explanations and 659 remain ·unidentified The 10,344 that have 1been ·explained were attribut.d to streh things as astronomical phenomena, aircraft, ·balloons, satellites, natural phenomena, etc. · · . . 1958 was-a very gOod year

Two years :Which stand out in UFO sight- · ings are 1952 and 1957. In 1952 a total of 1;501 uFOs were. sighted and of these · 1,198 were explained and 303 -were left unexplained. . In .. 1957 a total of 1,006 UFOs were reported and of - these 992 were identified and 14 were not . .

Historically UFOs became · a · national concern on ·June 24, 1947. It was on this day . that ail experienced pilot and representative ' of a .fire-eontrol equipment firin ip Boise, Idaho saw the first of the "modern" flying aucers.

Kenneth Arnold was flying his plane in the,,area around Mt. Ranier; Washington. . He· was at an altitude of about 14,-000 ·feet and visibility was unlimited. After awhile he ·noticed a bright flash_ and whef\ he looked to his left he sa-w a chain of peculiar looking objts flying in the direction of Mt. Ranier at an alti

·tu<Je of 9500 feet. Taking. note of . the peculiarity of t.hese obj.ects, he calculatd that ·they were travelhn_g at a speed m excess of 1500 miles per hour. Air Force Whitewash

The Air Force says that the · Arnold case was· one that they have not yet -been able to · explain, The officil theory is that the objects he saw were 4lothing but. mirages. Arnold, in an interview . after his sighting, said that the objects "flew Uke a saucer would if you skipped it

across the water:" Thus UFOs were given the misleading label of "flying saucers." ·

There are literally thousands of outstanding UFO reports that I could include in this article, but what is of equal interest is the UFO investigation activity in the loal area.

· James Sipprell, me.ntioiled before, is_ 'a

· local citizen who has become the Regional Coordinator for NIOAP. He has had a giea deal of experience and dealings With members of· the scientific -COOl· munity who are of the opinion that UFOs are real and do exist. Whether they are

. . from outer space .or not, he could not sy. It is still .. unknown. Hopes which had been raised at the fonnation of the ·Condon Commission (a group that ·was- given a large sum of money to investigate UFOs), that an answer. to this question might be found, ·seem to have dimmed ·as a result of the serious inter-group fighting among the scientists. ·

Are they holding back te facts?_ One of the .more recent events in the

field of UFO investigation was the First Annual . UFO Symposium held in c-hippewa, Ontario. It was here that Mr. Sipprell and, 40 highly respected members of the scientific community met and had informal diussions on the subj ect of UFOs. . . .

The mosi important thing to come ·out of this Sympoium was the fact that for

· the · first time the ·press and other medias were allowed to see 13 reports -from· Project Bluebook and __ Proj ect Grudge, a se-cret research group. ·. · - ·

In a closing statement Mr. Sipprell said · that it was his personal opini-on that there

is another secret. organization somewhat like the CIA, which, has a strong financial backing and is going -bout trying to suppress the proper investigation of UFO re-

. ports. This, ·he feels, is •being done by men disguised as NICAP officials and Air Force personel.

In conclusion, I say that with the increase in the .serious coverage of the mixed mediJs concerning. th UFO, it will come . to pass that within the next five or sfx years there is going to be a major breakthrough- in UFO raearch. We just might ·come up with some very concrete proof of their existence.

The elder-statesman of UFO inVestigative groups in the U.S. is an organization known as APRO (Aerial Phenomenon Besearch Organization). APRO was formed in 1952 and ·has its headquarters.' in Tuscon, Ariz. It is headed ·by Leslie J. Lorenzen and Coral E. Lorenzen, th authors of numerous publications concerning UFOs. APRO -takes a conservative look at the UFO and feels thafr all. facts indicate that this phenomenon ·.u of an interplanetary nature.

Another American organization is one which, although somewhat ·less conserva-tive than APRO, does prove that there u:e many more people concerned . about ts mystery than is commonly believed. This group is known ·as SAUCERS (Saucer and Unexplained Celestial Events Researeh Society). SAUCERS is located in Fort Lee, N.J., and New York City. It was established back in 1954 ·and claims to have a membership of close to 7000. SAUCERS' members believe that ·because of the overwhelming amount of evidence presented, the UFO is real and probably. comes from the planet Mars.

Some bad publicity Besides the groups mentioned above,

there are other groups who claim ··to have. had some special contact with aliens lrom other galaxies. and profit by their experiences in forming conventions and . societies that nourish on the sale of o"ter space memorabilia. It is these groups· and the people who run them that h-ave made the investigation and considera·tion of UFOs a frequent subject of ridicule, and its devotee.s candidates for scorn. · \l

The UFO mystery is· a preplexing one, full of arguments pro and con. But the very fact that it is argued shows that many people consider it a possi;bility that man is not alone in this vast universe; that he

'is being examined or surveyed by. some race of intelligent beings with enQUgh technological development to invent vtly superior modes of vehicular travel through the cosmic voids.

Even the prophets saw . them The actual beginnings of the UFo mys

tery go back to th Bi•ble. H one reads the Bible carefully, he will come upon several instances in which a UFO sighting is depicte<l in extraordinary detail. me people •believe that the sightings reported in the Bible should· not be considered because of their antiquity aP'i ambiguity of . defining terms. I believe . that the older the report, the more. reliable the information, for in ancient times they did not know· what such things as airplanes, S'Wamp gas, · or electricity were-these

·being the main explanations. of modern UFO sightings. This lack ·of techMlogical understanding tends to lend more cred: ence to tiiese reports.

Two such· sightings occur in the King James version of the Bible. According to

the Bible, sometime in 593 RC. the prophet Ezekiel described a machine which came down from the sky ana landed near the Chebar River in Chaldea (now a region of Iraq).

UF.Os according to Ezekiel Ezekiel described the strange incident

as follows: "And I Looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire unfolding itself, and a brig·htness ·was · about it, and out of the midst thereof as the color of amber, out of the midst of fire."

"Also out of the midst thereof came the likenes of four living creatures· ... And everyone had four faces, and· everyone had four wings. And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the color of burnished brass. And they had the- hands of man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings . . . As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the ·face of a

.lion, on the right side; and they four had -the fce of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of -an eagle."

Ezekiel then went on to describe the ship and its actions. He was then ·taken on board the ship and transported to the Tel Abid Mountains. There he remained mute for seven days . . .

French mathematician . a n d author Jacques Vallee said about this incident:

"The incident is so objecively . depicted that it could hardly be considered a tale to impress superstitious listeners."

A LOOK AT BOOKS --by Michael Lindner

OPERATION TROJAN HORSE, by Jor A. Keel; G.P. Putnam• Sons, 1970: 320 pages; index; bibliography; $6.95.

It has baen said that trying to keep up with John Keel's latest theories is like chasing your shadow with the sun at your back:you•re always one step behind. In spite of this,or,perhaps, because of it,Keel is one of today•s most widely discqssed and controversial UFO investigators. After many delays and false starts, his long-awaited book has finally been published.

After starting full-time UFO research and investigation in 1966,Keel gradually came to realize that the popular extraterrestrial theory could not account for all facets of the enigma. Many of the -patterns used by the ufonauts today can be seen to have been used in earlier flaps: 1897. 1909, 1913, 1934. and others. The previously overlooked mass of data known as "ground level activities" was particularly revealing. These manifestations include poltergeist activity in flap areas, MIB-psychic harassment of UFO researchers and witnesses, dead and mutilated animals near areas of intense UFO activity, and the contactee phenomenon.

After intensive field investigation and research, Keel came to these conclusions:

UFOs are not extraterrestrial spacecraft;they are merely a small part of a much larger phenomenom that has been with us for ages.

The seemingly metallic UFOs are only temporary transmogrifications of energy,

A large part of UFO experience is confabulatory.

The contactees are telling the "truth" as it is told to them by the ufonauts, who are the real ITars.- - --

The controlling force behind all of these machinations are the "ultraterrestrials",or "elementals", who are familiar with all facets of our lives and thinking processes, and who take advantage of this knowledge for their own purposes.

The old religious framewor-k of· these various manifestations has merely been replaced with a. new extraterrestrial one by the ultraterrestrials. The phenomenon itself has not changed.

"Heresy?" Granted. But a logical heresy, one worthy of serious consideration.

Naturally, there is much, mucn more in this 320 page book, which cannot be dealt with in this brief review.! strongly recommend OPERATION TROJAN HORSE

read, and it is an important book. I believe that while Keel's theories may not be 100% correct on every point, they are closer to the truth than any others so far advanced. Unfortunately, while a seven dollar price-tag is not at all excessive in our inflationary economy, it will discourage many who should read OTH from buying a copy. This reviewer hopes OPERATION TROJAN HORSE will be speedily reissued in a paperback edition. **************************************************

STRANGE CREATURES FROM TIME AND SPACE, by John A. Keel;Fawcett Gold Medal,1970;288 pages; index;75¢.

Anyone who has read a Frank Edwards v·olume knows that there are some mighty strange beasties skulking around on Earth, but I doubt that very many of those readers are aware of the bewildering variety of these creatures. In STRANGE CREATURES, John A. Keel has given us a guidebook to the hazy world of "monsterology. " Keel covers a wide range of subject matter (perhaps too much for one book) including Bigfoot,Mothman, human oddities, vampires, sea and lake creatures, angels and devils, ghostlike "bedroom invaders",UFO occupants, and the seemingly paraphysical apparitions of the Mount Misery ilk.

Some interesting points are brought out. The author notes that often when a UFO flap is underway in a rural locale, livestock are mysteriously disappearing a few miles away from the area of the most intense saucer activity. Could the UFOs be nothing more than decoys to draw attention from the vanishing animals? Keel feels this is the most reasonable explanation. Poltergeists are often active in a flap area, and continue their antics long after the UFO wave has subsided. Again, coincidence seems to be stretched a little too far, and Keel concludes, on the basis of this and much other data, that all of these phenomena--UFO, Fortean, religious, parapsychological--are interrelated and controlled by one central source. Much of the evidence does, indeed, seem to support the impressive, though controversial, theories spelled out in this book and in OPERATION TROJAN HORSE.

As in any work of large scope, CREATURES contains some errors. Most of these, however, are very minor, and do not detract from the book's general credibility. For example, the year of the "C.A.V." case, reported in UFOs OVER THE AMERICAS, is given as 194?,instead of the correct 1949. This reviewer was amused to see that the "About the Author" page seemed to contain more outright errors and dubious statements than the entire text of the book.

On the negative side, there are no photos, illustrations, or maps. The Patterson Bigfoot film and the Mount Misery creature photo, for example, are discussed fully in the text. Their inclusion

16

in a photo section would have been of considerable interest to most readers. There are a number of such "monster" photos, and the failure to include at least a few of them is puzzling. I feel this is a serious oversight.

To sum up, this is one of the most absorbing Fortean books I've seen this year. Keel's fluid style and sardonic humor make for extremely interesting reading. Carefully indexed, and well documented, this book will be invaluable to researchers. And it is just the type of book one might use to introduce a friend to the fascinating world of Forteana. But a word of advice: while reading this book, you might want to stop once in a while to murmer this medieval English prayer:

"From ghoulies and ghosties, And long-legged beasties, And things that go bump i' the night, Good Lord, deliver us. "

inherent truth in any conceptual model. Any conceptual model is subject to revision if it fails at any time to include all avilable evidence successfully and without equivocation. If, at any time-now or in the future, new evidence is'secured that fails to fit into any previous model, then that model must be revised or abandoned. Revision of a cherished model may be fraught with anguish, and because of this, be long in coming. However, neither anguish nor delay will stay revision."
