THE DAVID Paradise EXPERIENCE

Welcome to the experience of the DAVID Paradise XL, a digital audio-visual entrainment (AVE) device, designed to support you in your questfor wellness by promoting various areas of the brain to work together ina harmonious fashion. Through the experience of AVE, you mayexperience yourself in a new and beneficial way.

Many users of the DAVID Paradise XL experience:

- deep relaxation while feeling more energized, - visual images, colors and patterns, - the sense of feeling "grounded"and calm,- the boost of mental clarity when resolving problems.

How and why do these sensations occur? Several changes take placeduring and following an AVE session:

The first aspect of AVE involves dissociation. Dissociating is the firststep towards effective meditation. This is the clearing of thoughts andloss of body awareness similar to what a Zen mediator would experience.

Secondly, cerebral blood flow increases. Most cognitive and emotionaldisorders involve areas of the brain that are low in blood flow. A studyby Fox and Reichle showed AVE increased cerebral blood flow up to28%.

Thirdly, EEG activity changes. The concept of entrainment is aboutaltering brainwave activity. Quantitative EEG (QEEG) studies haveconfirmed the normalization of brain activity during and following anAVE session. Brain activity similar to that of experienced Zen mediatorsmay be created. Aberrant brainwave activity in various conditions suchas depression, anxiety, ADD, seasonal affective disorder, chronic fatigue, etc., may be restructured into healthier patterns.

Long, graceful breathing cycles have long been used as part ofmeditation. Scientifically, this technique has been analysed and shownto settle down a stressed autonomic nervous system. Both sympathetic(flight-or-fight) activity and para-sympathetic (the brain’s efforts tocompensate) activity settle down dramatically using controlled, sloweddeep breathing techniques.

The heart speeds up with every breath in and slows down with everybreath out. This difference in heart rate is called Heart Rate Variability(HRV). For example, a relaxed person using controlled breathing mayhave a heart beat of 80 beats per minute while breathing in and as low as65 beats per minute while breathing out. The difference or "swing" isabout 15 beats per minute (bpm). When people get stressed, their hearttypically clamps as low as 5 bpm HRV and spikes sometimes as high as30 bpm HRV. This is abnormal activity and is rough on the heart.

The HRV technique used in the DAVID Paradise XL is based on a 10second breathing cycle (six breaths/minute, by inhaling slowly for 5seconds and exhaling slowly for 5 seconds in an easy, relaxed breath). When using HRV paced breathing, listen to the heartbeat generatedby the PAL through the headphones. Inhale for two heartbeats andexhale for two heartbeats (not your own heartbeats!). Most sessionsbegin at seven breathing cycles/minute (28 heartbeats/min) and slow tosix breaths /minute (24 heartbeats/min). This allows the user to breathea little faster at the onset of a session until he/she has had time to relax.

For more information about HRV, see our newsletter on our website atwww.mindalive.com/spring03/htm and scroll down to the "TechTalk"section.

TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY PACK (Travel Model Only)The DAVID Paradise XL has a built-in rechargeable battery packconsisting of six "AA" nickel-cadmium batteries. When fully charged, your Paradise XL can operate for four to five hours. When therechargeable batteries are low (after approximately four hours of useor four weeks of storage), they must be recharged using the adapterprovided (plug the adapter into the Paradise XL adapter jack locatedby the "AC/Power" indicator lights). The multi-voltage adapter can beplugged in at all times without running the risk of overcharging thebatteries. Negative polarity has been preset for your convenience. Shouldthe plug end come off, please re-plug with positive (+) on wire to negative(-) on end plug. The Paradise XL can be left plugged in at all times, provided the voltage is left at 7.5 volts. As the battery is charging, the a/clight on the Paradise XL will go out. This is normal. If the batteries havebeen completely drained, the adapter can be used on the 9 volt setting tofast charge the batteries. You will need 10 hours to re-charge. The a/clight will be on all the time. Remember to switch the multi-voltage adapterback to 7.5 volts after fast charging. Failure to do so may result in damageto your batteries.

When the batteries are low while the Paradise XL is in use, the session willend prematurely with Soft-OffTM. If the Paradise XL turns off right afteryou turn it on, the batteries are very low.

When the Paradise XL is turned off, the microprocessor in the Paradise XLcontinues to use a small amount of power to "remember" your preferences. Therefore, even if you are not using your Paradise XL, you will need torecharge the batteries every four weeks.

GLOSSARY

Beat Frequency - The difference between two audio/visual stimuli rates asthey “drift” in and out of synchronization with each other. Eg. one stimuliat 8 Hz and one at 12 Hz would produce a beat of 4 Hz.

Binaural Beats - Occur when two continuous tones of different pitches areplayed separately through each side of the headphones.

Color Overlays - Color filters to attach to the Omniscreen eyesets. Theoverlays may be used with any of the sessions.

Dissociation - A process in which feelings, memories, thoughts andphysical sensations drift from consciousness. Dissociation can occur whenwe meditate, exercise, read a good book, watch a movie or enjoy a sportingevent.

Entrainment - A process where the brain synchronizes to and resonateswith an external stimuli.

Expand - In expand, selected tones are heard in the left ear at the same timethe lights in the left visual field. The tones for the right ear and lights forthe right visual field are off. The stimulation continues by alternating rightear/right field stimulation on, then left ear/left field stimulation on.

Extended Tape - The length of some tapes being played through theParadise XL may be longer than the session selected. Therefore, theParadise XL stays on for fifteen minutes after the Soft OffTM, to allowprerecorded tapes to finish playing.

Focus - In focus, both left and right eyeset lights and the tones in the leftand right sides of the headphones are on at the same time. The stimulationcontinues by alternating all tones and lights on, all tones and lights off.

Fractionated Sessions - Fractionation is a well-known hypnotic technique. When attempting to enter altered states of consciousness, one often driftstoward the altered state, then returns slightly to the alert state only to driftdeeper into the altered state. Rather than try to push the user into an alteredstate of consciousness, fractionated sessions use this process to itsadvantage, to flow with the user to achieve entrainment.

Function - Any variable selection, ie. rate, right eye/left ear rate, intensity, volume, pitch, focus/expand and sometimes time/extend.

Page 32: Manual.v3 Sept 2003 - bio-medical.combio-medical.com/media/support/DAVIDXL.pdfThe Rediscovery of Audio-Visual Entrainment Technology - Dave Siever New Technology for Attention and

Page 32

Ganzfeld - A passive method of entering an alpha/theta state ofconsciousness as a result of constant and unchanging stimulation to thebrain. See Tranquilite.

HemistepTM Sessions - A process which involves distraction andconfusion, similar to dual induction hypnosis. The stimulus is so alive andchanging that the user is quickly distracted from internal thoughts.

Intensity - Varies the intensity of the lamps in the eyeset (00 - 15) eitherbrighter or dimmer.

Mode - The Paradise XL may be operated in five different “modes” ormethods of operation: (1) Manual Operation, (2) Preset Sessions (factoryprogram), (3) User Defined Session (you design your own sessions withthe Paradise XL Session Editor, (4) Special Application Sessions.

Module - Modules are the individual sections that make up a session. Ateach change in any function (rate, intensity, focus/expand, etc.) is a newmodule.

Pitch - Varies the pitch of the tone (pulsed or binaural).

Program - To define modules and functions to create your own session.

Ramp - A ramp provides a gentle “scaling” from a value set in one moduleto a new value set in the next module. All ramps are linear from onemodule to the next, even if an adjustment was made during a session. Rate, right rate, volume, intensity, pitch, and focus/expand may be ramped. When focus and expand are ramped, a gentle change from focus to expandor expand to focus occurs over a 12 second interval.

Rate (Range: 0.5 Hz to 25 Hz) - The rate is the number of flashes oflights and pulses of sound being produced by the Paradise XL in onesecond and is indicated in Hertz (Hz) or cycles per second. For example:If the lights flashing and/or tones are pulsing 16 times in one second, therate is 16 Hz. The rate key controls both the left and right rates unless theright rate has been adjusted to a different rate.

Right Eye/Right Ear Rate (Range: 0.5 Hz to 25 Hz) - Adjusts the rateof the right visual fields and right ear independent of the rate of the leftvisual fields and left ear. The right eye/right ear rate will default to thesame rate as the left eye/left ear if unadjusted during a session. This featureallows the user to experience two different brainwave states simultaneously. It is most effective when used in lucid dreaming, specific hemispheredevelopment and differential hemispheric experiences.

Page 33: Manual.v3 Sept 2003 - bio-medical.combio-medical.com/media/support/DAVIDXL.pdfThe Rediscovery of Audio-Visual Entrainment Technology - Dave Siever New Technology for Attention and

Page 33

Rubber Banding - A process which allows the user to adjust the rateduring a program without altering the remainder of the program or anyother function. All ramps are constantly being monitored. Any change ina ramped function during a session will be re-scaled automatically so thatthe desired value of that function will occur when the next module arrives.

Schumann Resonance - Schumann Resonance (a rate of 7.83 Hz) is thenumber of times per second that electromagnetic radiation travels aroundthe earth. This calculation is based on the speed of light travelling throughfree air or a vacuum at roughly 186,273 miles (299,775,730 metres) persecond. Scientists have measured an electromagnetic radiation whichpropagates around the earth's diameter of 23,789 miles (38,285,533 metres)as 7.83 revolutions per second. It has been observed that many peoplepractising paranormal activities produce a brainwave pattern at the samefrequency (rate) as Schumann Resonance.

Sensory Motor Rhythm (SMR) - The brainwave rhythm that occurs in thesensory motor cortex of the brain. Its frequency typically ranges from 12to 15 Hz. It is truly only SMR when this frequency is detected over thesensory motor strip however, many clinicians use the term SMR to describethe frequency range no matter where it occurs in the brain.

Session - A combination of modules.

Soft OffTM - The intensity of the goggle lamps and the volume of the tonesare simultaneously and slowly lowered which provides a gentle way to enda session. When the light and sound stimulation abruptly stops, the usermay experience mild nausea and/or dizziness, known as somnatic shock.

Target Rate - The target rate is the desired brainwave state the user wantsto achieve during a session. The target rate must remain constant for atleast five minutes, which is the time needed to allow brainwave entrainmentto occur. When selecting a preset session, the length of time of the sessionis displayed in minutes and then the target rate flashes. All preset sessionsfrom 1 through 19 have a start rate, end rate and a target rate. Some of thesessions have a variety of different rates and therefore no target rate exists.

Tranquilite - The Tranquilite function utilizes the “ganzfeld effect” byproviding constant and unchanging stimulation to the brain. An alpharhythm is attained through this fixed, yet passive concentration. Also maybe used with any of the color overlays.
