GriPhyN & iVGDL

• GriPhyN = Grid Physics Network– Develop the Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) software and

other Grid tools to enable “Petascale” Data Grid Science.

• iVDGL = international Virtual Data Grid Laboratory– Global Laboratory (Worldgrid) to conduct Data Grid

tests “at international scale” (US, EU, Asia, …).

• Participants– Computer scientists – US-CMS (High Energy Physics)– US-ATLAS (High Energy Physics)– LIGO (Gravity wave experiment)– SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey)

GriPhyN/iVDGL Basics• Both NSF funded, overlapping periods

– GriPhyN: $11.9M (NSF) + $1.6M (match) (2000–2005)– iVDGL: $13.7M (NSF) + $2M (match) (2001–2006)

• Basic composition– GriPhyN: 12 universities, SDSC, 3 labs (~80 people)– iVDGL: 16 institutions, SDSC, 3 labs (~70 people)– Experiments: CMS, ATLAS, LIGO, SDSS– Large overlap of people, institutions, management

• Grid research vs Grid deployment– GriPhyN: 2/3 “CS” + 1/3 “physics” ( 0% HW)– iVDGL: 1 /3 “CS” + 2/3 “physics” (20% HW)– Tight integration of goals & deliverables

> Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) and Outreach in common

GriPhyN/iVDGL Outreach Program Goals

Communicate the ideas of the computational and data

grids to a diverse community of faculty and students, as well as the public at large.

Incorporate faculty, K-12, undergrad and beginning graduate students at other institutions (in particular MSI) into GriPhyN/iVDGL research.

Engage all senior personnel to lecture and mentor E/O activities, facilitated by an outreach coordinator anchored at The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB).

• Work with other E/O programs– Share ideas, activities, workshops, etc

> EOT-PACI, QuarkNet, AN-MSI etc

• Build external outreach component: – Web pages, Newsletter, etc– Contact with Press, CS and Physics communities

Summary• Progress on several fronts:

– Successful participation of minority students in research activities!

– E/O Web development– Annual Outreach Workshop/Tutorials– Annual Trillium Newsletter– Collaboration with other E/O programs– Many talks bring Grid message to new groups

• Next Challenges:– Use Grids for science applications.– Extend outreach to other MSI: more students

(at all levels) and talks.– Enhance collaborations with other E/O programs.
