The risks of pollution and sustained environmental damage in ports all overthe world is becoming more and morean issue. During the last 15 yearsincreasing attention has been paid onhow to reduce pollution coming fromthe auxiliary diesel engines of shipswhich traffic, in ever increasing numbers,the ports and terminals around theworld. These ships keep their auxiliaryengines running when moored to ensurea continued power supply for essentialservices.

To provide a solution the Cavotec Grouphas designed two different alternatives.The first alternative is to mount the cablemanagement system on the ship orshore. The connection to shore is madevia special high voltage cables to anintegrated technical pit fitted into thequay. Thanks to its design, this technicalpit occupies a minimum of space. Theship based cable management systemconsists of the following components:electrical connectors (up to 12 kV),flexible cables, slipring, optical fibreaccumulator, motor reducer, cable drum,electrical control panel and a retractablehydraulic cable guide.

The second alternative is to have asimilar system fitted inside a standard-size container. This container can then beplaced on the ship either in front orbehind the ships’ accomodation area. Asthe whole system is placed inside acontainer, and therefore completelymodular, it can either remain in a fixedposition for longer periods or it can bemoved according to shipping routes.

Shore-based power supply

A unique feature of this AMP unit is itsrelative small size, making it aninteresting option for installations wherethere is restricted space. Of course thefixed installation does not provide theflexibility of the mobile AMP system as itbecomes an integrated part of the quayand cannot be moved after installation.

The mobile AMP system’s mainadvantage is the flexibility it provides.When a ship comes into port it can bedeployed and activated immediately.Once it is no longer needed it can eitherbe stored or used at another berth.

The fixed AMP system consists of:- heavy-duty drums- special flexible cables- electrical control panel- Cavotec Connectors (up to 12kV)- special slipring assembly- motor-reducer- telescopic lifting arm (optional)

The mobile AMP system consists of:- self-propelled Cavotec Power Caddy- special flexible rubber cables- Cavotec Connectors (up to 12kV)- motor-reducer- electrical control panel- special slipring assembly- twin heavy-duty drums- telescopic lifting arm (optional)

BARGE-MOUNTED AMP SYSTEM 6,6KV (SHORE) – 440V (SHIP)

A third alternative in the shore-basedAMP systems range is to install the cablemanagement system and other electricalequipment on a barge. This solution hasbeen specifically designed toaccommodate AMP supply to ships thatcannot approach the quay in close.Traditional power supply systems do notallow for this but by using the barge-mounted solution, the AMP system canapproach the ship and provide acontinuous 440V power supply. This typeof system is operating succesfully at thePort of Los Angeles, USA.

The barge-mounted AMP system consistsof:- specially designed cable drums- Cavotec electrical connectors (< 12kV) - slipring assemblies- motor-reducer- optical fibre accumulator- step-down transformer- electrical control panel

Ship based power supply

Due to restricted space availability onboard ships it is not always possible tomount a fixed installation on the ships.To work around these restrictions,Cavotec has developed an innovativeway of supplying power to the ship.With this solution the power supplysystem is mounted into either one 40ftcontainer or two 20ft containers. The40ft container solution is the so calledAll-in-One Concept.

With the two 20ft container option thecustomer retains the possibility tochange the position of the containers orto move the system easily from one shipto the other. The cable managementsystem is placed in the lower containerand the electrical components in theupper one.

The All in One Concept consists of one40ft container which can be placed onthe port or starboard side of the ship.Cable management system andelectrical components are fitted intothe container. As with the other systemthe customer has the possibility tochange the position of the container orto move the system from one ship to theother depending on the shipping routes.

A completely different approach to AMPis offered by the “On- Ship” solutions.These systems are ideal when the quay iscompletely occupied by craneinstallations and auxiliary loading andunloading vehicles. In these situations itis not possible to install a shore-basedAMP and a ship-based option becomesthe obvious choice.

All equipment necessary for the shoreconnection, including the cablemanagement system, is installed onboardthe ship. This solution is only advised for“New building” projects and allows forquick and efficient connection of allpower supply equipment. Normally thecable management system is installednear the crew quarters in the generalvicinity of the electrical room.

Integrated Technical AMP Pit

To be able to supply power to eachindividual cable management system anintegrated technical pit must be installon the quay. This technical pit serves asthe main connection point for all thecables leading from the main quaypower supply up to the cablemanagement system. Thanks to itscompact design it occupies a minimumof space so it does not form anobstruction to any of the ports’operations.

The Integrated Technical Pit consists of:- Stainless steel housing (IP66).- Electrical sockets up to 12kV, fitted

with safety features such as pilots andinterlocks.

The Cavotec AMP high voltage powerconnectors are fitted with either thePush & Pull or Screw Ring system whichmakes them uniquely suited toapplications where the connector has tofrequently be connected anddisconnected, either by hand orautomatically. Thanks to their robustdesign these connectors are used allaround the world in the most extremeworking environments. The cams aremade from marine grade bronze whilethe mating ears in the plugs are fromstainless steel. The connector is rated IP66when connected.

Cavotec Power Connectors comply tothe following standards:NFC 20 040, VDE 0110, NFC 63300IEC 309-1, CEE 17, BS 4343IEC 529, DIN 40050, NFC 20010

All our connectors are electricallyinterlocked by the pilot contacts. To theright is a typical circuit for the pilotcontacts where the pins are loopconnected and the female pilot contactsare connected to the operating coilterminals of the switching device. Forsafety reasons, the pilots are last toconnect and first to disconnect. Thisensures that no disconnection underload can take place. Mechanicalinterlocking and fibre optic connectionscan be provided on request for all twoplug types. All materials are made ofmarine grade aluminium and bronze.
