Outboard CatamaransSmall survey catamarans powered by outboard engines combine stability and low maintenance propulsion. These catamarans provide generous work space that scientists require for handling high tech equipment while keeping initial vessel cost low. The platform integrates hydraulic systems, A/C units, and generators with vessel operation to optimize the efficiency of the crew. In addition, the first two vessel sizes are designed to trailer on US roadways with minimal work.


Diesel Powered CatamaransDiesel propelled catamarans offer ample torque and horsepower, enabling scientists to accomplish crucial survey tasks efficiently and accurately. In addition, these vessels provide cabin heat and power take-off for hydraulics. The larger catamarans are available in two configurations - planing and displacement. The planing catamarans are best propelled with water jets and the displacement catamarans work best with standard shaft and wheel, recessed in tunnels for protection.

Data Gathering: Speed & AccuracyThe combination of our catamaran hull with exceptional methods of survey equipment deployment enables efficient clean data gathering for the marine survey industry. Armstrong’s research and design team has engineered our deployment systems and hull design to eliminate movement.

Scientists consistently report obtaining IHO standard data at speeds of 8 knots in catamarans as small as 26 feet and at speeds of 12+ knots in larger vessels. Even in 3 1/2 foot wave height conditions, the stability of the catamaran hull renders remarkable imaging at 5+ knots.

Catamaran hulls minimize roll which aids in slowing the motion sensor’s data transfer rate, providing cleaner data and reduced field clean up. Customers report that adding an Armstrong catamaran to their fleet has furnished 40% more survey time due to a reduction in “no go” foul weather days.

HYPR ArmA hydraulic (or electric) power rotating arm, the HYPR Arm is mounted between catamaran demi-hulls utilizing gear reduction for sonar head deployment. This location provides protection for sonar equipment in both the deployed and stored position.

Multi MountDesigned for sonar technicians, the MM standardizes sonar mounts between vessels. It was specifically engineered to be used with our HYPR Arm; however, the MM can be side deployed or used in conjunction with a moon pool.

Shallow WaterArmstrong Marine, Inc. has partnered with Ross Laboratories to provide a “turnkey” shallow water survey system. The system utilizes six transducers: two hull mounted and two on each of the 10 foot cabin side integrated arms. Yielding a 25 foot swath of survey data collection capability, the arms are deployed hydraulically from controls mounted at the helm station. The catamaran hull includes integrated side pockets to house the sweep arms and allows the boat to be trailered. The combined stability and maneuverability of the catamaran hull allows for easy navigation in shallow waterways and rivers and maintains a dependably comfortable ride in rough water conditions.
