FALL PROTECTION
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A MOBILE FALLARREST/RESTRAINT SYSTEM?
No matter if you are working under OSHA 1926 or 1910, in the construction or industrial industry, the employer has a responsibility to provide a safe working environment for the employees. So, when it comes to fall protection, we understand that there are many options available in the market. Often, conventional fall protection, or anchoring into a roof is not an option; that is where a Mobile Fall Arrest/Restraint Systems comes in. A Mobile Fall Arrest/Restraint System provides excellent flexibility for the workers, and they are comfortable to use, practical, durable and mobile. Mobile Fall Arrest/Restraint Systems are a great option to keep multiple workers safe and productive.
Considering the hierarchy of fall protection is essential. Tie Down is the leader in providing active and passive fall protection solutions for all your rooftop safety needs.
1. The preferred solution to all fall hazards is the elimination of the danger. Analyze the reason for the fall hazard and consider changing the procedure, location or equipment used that will eliminate worker’s exposure. Consider moving the work to the ground, locating the HVAC system in a protected area, or designing a parapet wall with the appropriate height are some examples.
2. Utilizing guardrails or barriers for unprotected edges and covers over openings in the roof or working surface are examples of passive fall protection systems. Passive fall protection is ideal for sites where rooftop penetration is not an option, and there are significant hazards such as leading edge, skylights and roof hatches to name a few. Providing passive fall protection can cost more than utilizing personal protective equipment, but over the long term, the savings are significant as passive protection offers a higher level of safety, reduces training costs, and the resupply of consumables decreases. If you are accessing the work area on a frequent basis, then passive fall arrest is an ideal option. Work with a company that can help layout a practical rooftop solution.
3. Fall restraint systems are positioned in a location that a fall cannot occur. Fall restraint systems use PPE to restrict the worker’s range of movement so they cannot physically travel to the fall hazard. Fall restraint systems remove many considerations factored in when using fall arrest systems such as free fall clearance, rescue, arresting forces and more. Fall restraint is preferred over fall arrest because the system can remove the likelihood of secondary injuries due to the fall and make rescue much more comfortable since the worker is reachable.
4. Fall arrest systems have a higher risk over other options because the product must arrest the worker in free fall. With a free fall, the worker can be injured by striking the surrounding structure, or they have to stop the falling worker within an acceptable level of force and prevent him/her from contacting the ground. No matter the type of equipment you decide is best for your application, you must review and understand the products limitations and capabilities. Refer to a competent person as deemed by your company. If you have any questions, please contact a Tie Down team member, and we will be happy to assist.
TRIVIA QUESTION:
Which types of products does Tie Down carry that is considered restraint?
The answer must include a minimum of three different products. E-mail your answer to [email protected] and be entered into a drawing for a free limited edition ball cap and T-shirt. Please provide your name, size, andshipping address, and we will announce a winner at the end of each month.

FALL PROTECTIONPENETRATOR BASIC OPERATION
Prior to Positioning the Penetrator: Verify that thesurface is capable of supporting the Penetrator, ballast weights, cart, and all personnel using it.
The attachment tie-off anchor shackles must be pointed toward the leading edge and the cart is set to travel parallel to the unprotected edge or leading edge. All users should consult their PFAS manuals prior to use.
Position the Penetrator such that the front guard plate is between 4 feet from the leading edge, and in line with the center of the area to be worked.
Pull out Telescoping ArmHold on the bottom of the ballast arm and pull outward.Continue pulling until the ballast arm stops.
If ever needed, the ballast arm can be fully removedby pulling out the pull pin.
Carefully place the ballast weights one at a time.Be careful when placing the ballast, as each weighthas the potential of being a Pitch Point.
Fall Restraint Tie-Off ShacklesTwo Fall Restraint Anchor Shackles are installed on the top side of the Penetrator where labeled. The Fall RestraintAnchor Shackles DO NOT arrest falls. The user must insure that the Fall Restraint worker is personally equipped with lanyards, harnesses, safety lines, etc., when working inconjunction with potential fall arrest workers. Do not allow the fall restraint user to work close to any roof edge.
Fall Arrest Tie-Off ShacklesThe three Fall Arrest Tie Off shackles are located on the lower side of the Penetrator, in front of the stay clear guard as labeled. The user must insure that the lanyards andharness are properly attached.
During Repositioning the Penetrator:Active fall restraint is maintained by a maximum lengthof five feet less than the distance of the cart to theleading edge.

WARNING LINESWARNING LINE SYSTEMS
The use of warning lines can be beneficial when working near a leading edge, opening, or to keep workers from areas that are unsafe for other reasons. There are a few select scenarios where a 6′ warning line is an acceptable use as fall protection. These scenarios included: low-slope roof work, some leading-edge work, precast concrete erection and residential construction §1926.501(b)(2), (12), and (13). For any permanent visual warning linesystem, it almost always requires warning line to be placed 15′ or greater from the leading edge. Work may never be performed between the leading edge and the warning line.
Flagging on the warning line shall be of a highly visible material and spacing must not exceed 6′ - 1926.502(f)(2)(i) The lowest point of sag shall not be less than 34″ or greater than 39″ - 1926.502(f)(2)(ii) Stanchions shall be capable of resisting 16 pounds of force - 1926.502(f)(2)(iii) Warning line has a minimum breaking strength of 200 pounds - Subpart D - Walking - Working Surfaces 1910.21
