TORONTO - Business conditions at Canadian manufacturing compa-nies continued to improve at the end of the year, with output and neworders rising fur ther, according to the RBC Canadian ManufacturingPurchasing Managers' Index™ (RBC PMI™). Companies hired addi-tional workers and increased their buying activity in order to meethigher demand. Cost inflation remained relatively weak by historicalstandards, while factory gate prices increased at the sharpest rate inseven months.A monthly survey, conducted in association with Markit, a leadingglobal financial information services company, and the Supply ChainManagement Association (SCMA), the RBC PMI offers a comprehen-sive and early indicator of trends in the Canadian manufacturing sec-tor.The seasonally adjusted RBC Canadian Manufacturing PMI remainedin firm expansion territory at the end of the year, signalling a fur therimprovement in manufacturers' operating conditions. However, theheadline PMI fell from November's 55.3 to a three-month low of 53.9in December, suggesting that operating conditions improved at aslightly weaker rate. The average PMI reading for the four th quar ter(54.8) was the joint-best since the third quar ter of 2011."The PMI continues to register improvement in manufacturing busi-

ness conditions, though it finished the year slightly lower than the lastfew months - at 53.9 - indicating some moderation in the pace ofimprovement in December," said Paul Ferley, assistant chief econo-mist, RBC.
