Groynes these are themost popular forms of defence, they are madefrom wooden beams andare placed along the beachabout 100m apart. Theyhelp keep the beachtogether and stop the forceof the waves transporting itaway.

Sea Wall This is agreat big giant concretewall built to stop the sea

hitting and eroding theland, they are often veryugly and very expensive,but they are one of themost effective forms of defence

Granite reefs Are Big Longstrips of granite rocks placedin the sea to take the energyof the waves before it hits theland. They are effectivealthough they obstruct theview a little, these beaches arenot very good for surfing.

Beach replenishment is justany form of metal or stonedumped on a beach in hugebundles to try and protect theland, one of the cheapestand least effective defence.At Happisburgh the townspeople put any of their bricksor rubbish to try and stop theincoming sea.

Flood Gate This is a MetalGate which blocks the seafrom flooding the town behind

it. They are not the mosteffective and if the water is toostrong it will just flow over thegate, they provide easy accessto the beachwhen they areopen.

Promenades Not officially asea defence they help breakthe force of the waves before

reaching the land. They are justconcrete walkways, higher thanthe earth. They give easyaccess on the beach for walking and pushchairs.

Ridges are man-made, trucks placelots of shingle in different sizes of

slopes, the smallest tend to

be nearer the sea and theyget higher further in. These helpto break the force of thewaves but need a lot of maintenance

as the waves push them into differentpositions.

Curved backwash walls are just likesea walls, they are made fromconcrete but are not quite as big.

They curve around so that when thewave hits the wall it just curvesback round. They are quite effectivebut tend to be worn down quitequickly.
