    Manzanilla-Mayaro Road Rehabilitation

    Project

    Programme for Upgrading Roads Efficiency

  • 8/10/2019 Manzanilla-Mayaro Road Presentation from PURE

    2/21

    The Manzanilla-Mayaro Road was rendered

impassable as a result of severe structural breaches

in the roads subsurface layers. A prima facie

investigation pointed to the persistent inclementweather experienced over several days preceding

the disaster as the precipitative cause of flooding

and the resultant collapse of the roadway.

    The Manzanilla/Mayaro Road:

    Approximately 20km in length.

Connects Sangre Grande to Mayaro which

comprises villages of Ortoire, St. Joseph, Beau

Sejour, Plaisance, Pierreville, Beaumont, St. Ann's,Radix, Ste. Marguerite, Lagon Doux, Grand Lagoon

    and Lagon Palmiste.

    PROJECT APPROACH

Concurrent pursuit of both short- term and long

term solutions in a phased integrated approach to

    Achieve project objectives.

Phase 1 - Short Term: Restore Connectivity

    Reinstatement of roadway.

    Installation of Subsurface drainage.

Phase 2 Medium to Long Term: Holistic water

management - Coastal Protection Unit will discuss

    Coastal Protection.

    Phase 1.2 SCOPE DEFINITION

The philosophy for the restoration works are:

A sustainable approach (temporary works will form

    part of the permanent solution.)

Energy saving strategies for the restoration works

will be considered such as; use of recycling

technologies for salvaged and recovered materials

will underlie the design. Establishment of utility corridor within the cross-

    section of the roadway.

    DESIGN CONCEPT

Road structure founded on a reinforced flexiblestone, overlaid with a recycled stabilised layer

    comprising salvaged aggregate and asphaltic

materials, and surfaced with hot mix asphalt.

Encasement of the subsurface aggregate layers

    within water permeable geotextile membrane

allows for water through flow while securing the

    structural integrity of the road.

Geometry of the roadway will be constructed as

    to maintain the hydraulic balance.

    Phase 1.4 -CONSTRUCTION

During this phase emphasis will be placed on

Delivering connectivity at the shortest time frame.

Construction of Temporary works - Coffer

damming and dewatering in-order to mitigate

    flooding of the work zone.
