MAGDEBURG Magdeburg Cathedral Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice MAGDEBURG Catholic University Church St. Peter’s Church ROHRBERG Village Church GROSS AMMENSLEBEN Former Benedictine Abbey Church St. Peter and Paul HUNDISBURG Nordhusen Ruin WALBECK Ruin of the St Mary’s Abbey Church and Gravestone of Lothar II in the St Michaelis Village Church ENGERSEN Village Church MAGDEBURG Art Museum Unser Lieben Frauen Monastery MAGDEBURG Catholic Cathedral St. Sebastian HILLERSLEBEN Benedictine Nun’s Abbey St. Laurentius BEBERTAL St. Stephanus Cemetery Chapel WIEPKE Village Church This building, constructed from 1064, is one of the best preserved from the Romanesque period. Church and cloister convey an authentic impression of the original complex of the collegiate chapter/church founded in 1017/1018. It now houses the federal state’s Art Museum, the most important place for the presentation of contemporary art in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The cathedral of the bishopric of Magdeburg has been the bishop’s seat since 1994 and the home of the parish since 1878. In 1016, Archbishop Gero founded a canon monastery here. The double-spired façade and the crossing make the Romanesque construction look particularly imposing. Today only a few remnants of the late Romanesque abbey church bear witness to the former importance of Hillersleben Abbey. From the medieval furnish- ings, the cherubs standing by the dormitory and two small capitals remain. The baptismal font from 1580 and the baroque epitaph are worth mentioning. One of the rare small churches from the 10th century, remnant of a mission church. The two round windows in the southern wall and the historical field- stones in the south and north wall of the hall are presumably from the early Romanesque construction. In the chapel’s current east wall, a foundation base clearly marks the original corners of the east wall. Late Romanesque fieldstone church from the 12/13 th century which has been fully restored inside and outside. In the sanctuary there is a wooden coffered ceiling from 1602 and a well-preserved confessional box. A triumphal arch separates the sanctuary from the nave; beneath this arch is the chalice-shaped baptismal font. From the tower one enters the church through a double arcade. Otto the Great, founder of the Holy Roman Empire German Nation in the 10 th century, chose Magdeburg as his favourite palatinate in Germany. In 1209, the construction of the first Gothic cathedral in Germany began. Out of the original Romanesque structure, the west tower has been preserved. On the ground floor there are two round arches with double arch brick inserts. The present gothic hall church dates from the 12 th century. The nave was con- verted into a three-aisle hall in around 1400. Late Romanesque fieldstone church from the 12/13 th century, with a transept from the 19 th century. Particularly worth seeing in the inside of the church are the Romanesque, chalice-shaped font on a cubiform capital, the pulpit from 1691, the retable (ca. 1700), and the organ from the year 1886. The monastery church of the Benedictines was endowed in 1110 and conse- crated in 1135, and was one of the few Catholic monasteries to withstand the turmoil of the Reformation in the Dukedom of Magdeburg until 1804. Out of the Romanesque furnishings, the entrance portal, ornaments in the imposts of the pillars, and remnants of the floor tiles still remain. The Nordhusen Ruin is a sign of the former settlement of Nordhusen, and is visible from a long way away. The roughly 17-metre-high cross steeple, relic of an imposing church, is a reminder of a significant settlement, which was already abandoned in the High Middle Ages. Archaeological investigations indicate that the settlement was of almost early urban dimensions. St Mary’s Abbey Church and family tomb of the counts of Walbeck. In the ruin of the abbey church one can still see existing brick work from the time of the Ottonians. The ruin of Walbeck is open to the public. It is possible to view the stucco sarcophagus of the founder Lothar II, by prior appointment at tel. +49 39061 3379. Late Romanesque fieldstone church from the start of the 13 th century, which also acted as a defensive church in the Middle Ages. The original furnishings of the church included one of the region’s oldest triumphal roods, which was removed from the church around 1900, and is now kept in the Altmark Museum Stendal. 1 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 9 DIESDORF Augustinian Monastery Church St. Maria and Crucis Monastery, 29413 Diesdorf, tel. + 49 3902 327 ::: Evangelical parish, Am Schäfertor 7 OPENING TIMES: April – Sept. The richly ornamented embrasure portal on the front wall of the southern transept is worth seeing. The paintings in ornament shapes in the eastern section from the original period of the church are outstanding. 10 SALZWEDEL St. Lawrence’s Church The originally three-aisled brick church was built in around 1250 on the old salt road. Typical of the region is the contrast between the red brick, black glazed blocks and white facings. It became a salt depot in 1692, and has been a Catholic parish church since 1860. The cruciform basilica, one of the region’s earliest arched brick churches, is a fully preserved part of the Romanesque architecture. The portal is a prime example of medieval architectural symbolism. The wooden crucifix from 1240 and the gothic carved altar are worth seeing. 12 BEUSTER St. Nikolaus Monastery Church The monastery church is an establishment in the dioceses of Verden. It is one of the oldest brick churches north of the Alps. Its construction plan corresponds to the typical basilica with two half-height flanking aisles and a choir. The centre nave receives daylight through regularly arranged win- dows in the clerestory. A square fortified tower originally stood in the west. The main portal, developed in elegant Romanesque shapes around 1220, is leant an impressive appearance by the change of form and colour between brick and sandstone; executed as a brick stepped portal with adapted sandstone embrasure pillars. 14 HAVELBERG St. Mary’s cathedral The present cathedral building was constructed from 1279 until 1380. The connection thus created between Romanesque and Gothic art is still clearly recognisable. The numerous coloured glass windows are especially valua- ble. The screen installed around 1400 impresses with its passion reliefs and sculptures. Domplatz, 39539 Havelberg, tel. + 49 1522 7661989, www.havelberg-dom.de OPENING TIMES: April – Oct. A walk through the church, with its seven round- arched arcades, pillars with beautifully crafted trapezoid capitals, and the triumphal arche, shows the simple beauty of Romanesque architecture. 16 Kirchberg 1, 39524 Sandau ::: Prot. This building, constructed from 1064, is one of the best preserved from the Romanesque period.

From the medieval furnish-ings, the cherubs standing by the dormitory and two small capitals remain. The baptismal font from 1580 and the baroque epitaph are worth mentioning.

One of the rare small churches from the 10th century, remnant of a mission church. The two round windows in the southern wall and the historical field-stones in the south and north wall of the hall are presumably from the early Romanesque construction. In the chapel’s current east wall, a foundation base clearly marks the original corners of the east wall.

Late Romanesque fieldstone church from the 12/13th century which has been fully restored inside and outside. In the sanctuary there is a wooden coffered ceiling from 1602 and a well-preserved confessional box. A triumphal arch separates the sanctuary from the nave; beneath this arch is the chalice-shaped baptismal font. From the tower one enters the church through a double arcade.

Discover the NORTHERN ROUTE

In the Middle Ages, Magdeburg, together with Constantinople, was called “the third Rome”. Otto the Great, founder of the Holy Roman Empire German Nation in the 10th century, chose Magdeburg as his favourite palatinate in Germany. In 1209, the construction of the first Gothic cathedral in Germany began.

Out of the original Romanesque structure, the west tower has been preserved. On the ground floor there are two round arches with double arch brick inserts. The present gothic hall church dates from the 12th century. The nave was con-verted into a three-aisle hall in around 1400.

Late Romanesque fieldstone church from the 12/13th century, with a transept from the 19th century. Particularly worth seeing in the inside of the church are the Romanesque, chalice-shaped font on a cubiform capital, the pulpit from 1691, the retable (ca. 1700), and the organ from the year 1886.

The monastery church of the Benedictines was endowed in 1110 and conse-crated in 1135, and was one of the few Catholic monasteries to withstand the turmoil of the Reformation in the Dukedom of Magdeburg until 1804.

Late Romanesque fieldstone church from the start of the 13th century, which also acted as a defensive church in the Middle Ages. The original furnishings of the church included one of the region’s oldest triumphal roods, which was removed from the church around 1900, and is now kept in the Altmark Museum Stendal.

SALZWEDELSt. Lawrence’s Church

The originally three-aisled brick church was built in around 1250 on the old salt road. Typical of the region is the contrast between the red brick, black glazed blocks and white facings. It became a salt depot in 1692, and has been a Catholic parish church since 1860.

The abbey ruins are in a picturesque location above the Arendsee. The cruciform basilica, one of the region’s earliest arched brick churches, is a fully preserved part of the Romanesque architecture. The portal is a prime example of medieval architectural symbolism. The wooden crucifix from 1240 and the gothic carved altar are worth seeing.

12

BEUSTERSt. Nikolaus Monastery Church

The monastery church is an establishment in the dioceses of Verden. It is one of the oldest brick churches north of the Alps. Its construction plan corresponds to the typical basilica with two half-height flanking aisles and a choir. The centre nave receives daylight through regularly arranged win-dows in the clerestory. A square fortified tower originally stood in the west.

In the central axis of the western building of the church there is a magnifi-cent round-arched columned portal. The main portal, developed in elegant Romanesque shapes around 1220, is leant an impressive appearance by the change of form and colour between brick and sandstone; executed as a brick stepped portal with adapted sandstone embrasure pillars.

HAVELBERGSt. Mary’s cathedral

The present cathedral building was constructed from 1279 until 1380. The connection thus created between Romanesque and Gothic art is still clearly recognisable. The numerous coloured glass windows are especially valua-ble. The screen installed around 1400 impresses with its passion reliefs and sculptures.

The three-aisled basilica from around 1200 was built in connection with Jerichow Monastery. A walk through the church, with its seven round-arched arcades, pillars with beautifully crafted trapezoid capitals, and the triumphal arche, shows the simple beauty of Romanesque architecture.

This church, built in the 12th century, is a treasure because of its unique mural paintings. They were rediscovered and revealed by the restorer Anna- Maria Meussling in 1973. The paintings in the apse are especially well pre-served; they have been conserved but their colouring has not been added to. Because of this they still have their original Romanesque appearance.
