Map Scale

The scale of a map is the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground.

1 : 100 000 000

or 1cm on the map is equal to 100 000 000cm on land

A town plan might be on a scale of 1:10,000 A world map might be on a scale of 1:100,000,000.

What is Map Scale?

If 2cm on a map ...

represents 1 km on the ground ...

the scale would be 2 cm = 1 km

*Obviously, maps aren't life-sized....otherwise we'd never be able to

fit them in our backpacks!

*Instead, cartographers plot maps on a ratio scale, where one

measurement on the map equals another larger amount in the

real world.

*The first number of the scale is always one. It's your unit of measurement, usually a centimeter.

The second number is the ground distance.

Some maps have a bar scales

Map Scale

Your smaller scale, or your 'distance on paper' always goes on top.

Your larger scale, or your actual distance, always goes on the bottom.

actual distance

Map scales may be expressed in words, as a ratio, or as a fraction. Example;* 'one centimetre to one hundred metres'  or  1:10,000   or   1/10,000

* 'one inch to one mile'    or    1:63,360    or    1/63,360

* 'one centimetre to one thousand kilometres'   or   1:100,000,000    or  1/100,000,000.  (The ratio would usually be abbreviated to 1:100M

Scale

On a map with a scale of 1:100 000, what actual distance in kilometers, is represented by 5cm?

1 cm = 5 cm100 000 cm x cm 500 000 cm 5 km

How do you convert cm to km?
