Current Resources
Students Information Literacy Modules Writing Center Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning Ask a Librarian Turnitin.com
IssuesFaculty Writing guidelines across colleges and
departments vary Unaware of available resources for referring
students (writing conventions, and others) Scattered resources lack connective thread Time and motivation (pay-off) Training of adjuncts for continuity (academic
integrity, incorrect use of writing conventions, and others)
Issues
Students Requirements/expectation for guidelines vary
by instructor (no uniformity of what is correct versus acceptable)
Writing Center attendance (apprehension, uncomfortable/fear, time, resources, others)
Literacy Modules – motivation (students can pass w/o transfer of skills)
Ask a Librarian – scheduling
Goal Change academic culture, where both
faculty/adjuncts and students embrace the significance of academic integrity and writing conventions.
Objective Students apply the writing conventions
appropriately in their academic work; faculty applies clear and consistent guidelines for assessment.
Vision
Multi-step, on-going process involving cooperative action from all partners (such as FCTL, WC, WAC, IED, Library Services)
Next Steps Expand FCTL training for faculty/adjuncts
by creating/or accessing Literacy Modules addressing writing conventions (i.e., correct quoting, citing, paraphrasing)
Define clear, concise and consistent guidelines for faculty/adjuncts across departments and colleges
Recommend embedding “Ask A Librarian” URL as a standard within syllabi and all online courses
Potential Barriers Peer resistance to change Student resistance to structure Perception of what services should be
available versus current provisions Limited resources (personnel, time,
financial) Differences in perception of academic
integrity significance
