1. SCOPE
1.1 IDENTIFICATION
This operator handbook is identified by :Object Operator Handbook for the Map Generation Tool (MAPGEN) adapted to MAGIC
applications
Title OPERATOR HANDBOOK (OH) FOR THE MAPGEN-Magic SYSTEM
Number 56261060 - 108
1.2 SYSTEM OVERVIEW
MAPGEN is an off-line tool used to generate and maintain sets of static maps dedicated to Air Traffic
Management (ATM) and/or Air Defense (AD) graphic systems. These maps are described through several
MAPGEN files (.mp files), written on disk, identifying the relevant geographic data and the associated graphic
representations.
MAPGEN-Magic is a specialized version of the standard MAPGEN tool, enabling the delivery of map files with
respect to the Ilog Views file format (ilv). To keep compatibility with Ilog Views mechanisms, this implies some
restrictions in maps generation that are described later on (the corresponding paragraphs are written in bold
underlined characters). The main restriction concerns expandable property of graphic objects that is not taken
into account by Ilog Views (all the objects are expandable).
1.3 DOCUMENT OVERVIEW
This volume describes the Human-Computer Interface (HCI) of the map generation tool (MAPGEN).
The functionalities that contribute to this, are described in this volume after a presentation of the types and
components of MAPs.
This precise description explains each step of MAP construction and generation for a particular project.
Explanations are given to show how to proceed to use those features.

3. GENERAL PRESENTATION OF HCI
Off-line data input is carried out on a dedicated Workstation which comprises :
a workstation processor unit,
a colour screen,
a keyboard,
a mouse (referred to henceforth as PD for Pointing Device).
Figure 1 - Standard MAPGEN Workstation
3.1 USE OF MOUSE
The mouse may have three buttons, but in this application, only two are necessary (the middle button is not
used).
The mouse can be used in different ways :
Clicking : this means pressing then releasing one of the mouses buttons.
Left click : clicking on the left button of the mouse. Similarly, we speak of "middle click" and "right click". Double left click : clicking twice on the left button of the mouse.
Holding down : pressing and holding down the left button of the mouse.
Holding down and moving : this operation consists in moving the mouse while holding the left button
pressed down. It is also called drag.
Release : this means releasing a mouse button which was previously pressed down. When release
takes place after a drag operation, the term drag and dropis used.
3.1.1 MOUSE POINTER
The position of the mouse is represented on the screen by an arrow known as the mouse pointeror pointing
device symbol, which follows the movements of the mouse and whose own movements are limited to the
screen (the mouse pointer sticks at the edge of the screen).
The head of the arrow is the active point of the pointer.
active point
The mouse pointer indicates the current position of the mouse on the screen. It enables actions to be carried
out on displayed objects.
To move the mouse pointer, simply move the mouse on the table.

3.2 USE OF KEYBOARD
3.2.1 PRESENTATION
There are two types of keys :
alphanumeric keys : these are used to enter data in the dialog window.
editing keys : these are used for correcting the data entered by moving the position of the cursor.
3.2.2 ALPHANUMERIC KEYBOARD
When an editing window is active, you can use the keyboard for:
Letter-by-letter input of text data. You can use the alphanumeric keys (A...Z, 0...9, the full stop and the
comma) to do this. In addition,
the Tab key can be used to validate the contents of the current input field (i.e. make it inactive) and
activate the next field (to the right) or activate the first activable field if the current field is the last one.
the Shift Tab key combination can be used to validate the contents of the current field, close it (i.e.
make it inactive) and activate the previous field (to the left) or activate the last activable field if the current
field is the first one.
the Backspace key is used to delete the last character entered.
the space bar inserts a blank character.
the 2 direction arrows (Up and Down) are used to move from line to line within a fields area.

Three levels have been established for the organisation of MAPGEN.
First Level : A projectA project contains the maps of a specific display system attached to a specific site. It has :
its own general characteristics described in GLOBAL PARAMETERS,
its own geographical POINTS and its own SYMBOLS database, which will be used for later map
building.
its own MAP CLASS, which are an amalgamation of one or more maps by categories.
Second Level : A Class
This level is made up of CLASSes which belong to a PROJECT. They define to group MAPs with same
characteristics.
A class is a set of maps of the same type (CLASSIC, MSAW, DAIW, STCA).
CLASSIC : It is composed of graphic elements (VECTORS, BEACONS, BROKEN-LINES, TEXTS,
RINGS, and POLYGONS). The point database, symbol database, and fonts allowed by
the MAPGEN installation are used to indicate the graphic elements attributes.
Note: To obtain a polygon with border color different from the background color, you must create 2
polygons.
MSAW: A MSAW area is defined by a safety altitude and an outline (polygon or circle). Only one
MSAW area is defined per MSAW map.
DAIW: A DAIW area is defined by a minimum and a maximum altitude and an outline (polygon or
circle). Validity periods must be specified. Only one DAIW area is defined per DAIW
map.

5.2 MAP GENERATOR WINDOW
MAPGEN supplies different functions to help in map construction. Access to them is controlled: it
depends on the current status of the development of the project.
A logical order must be complied with in the execution of the project; that is why certain functions and theirassociated command are not accessible during certain phases (they will have a grey-shaded style in the case
of the pushbuttons or menu bar).
The menu bar functions are: PROJECT, MAP CLASS, MAP, EDIT, VISUALISATION.

TheOPEN and NEWcommands lead to the last level of construction of a map within a project.
The content of a map depends on its type of class (type of class = CLASSIC, MSAW, DAIW and STCA).
After a new map has been created or an existing class has been opened, the window corresponding to the type
of class is displayed.
CLASSIC MAPs:
These are constructed with GRAPHIC ELEMENTS which can be vectors, beacons, broken lines, texts,
rings and polygons.
To obtain a polygon with border colour different from the background colour, you must create 2 polygons.
MSAW (Minimum Safe Altitude Warning) MAP:
Obstacles, as mountain areas and high constructions, can be a danger for air traffic.
The Minimum Safe Altitude Warning capability, by considering the tracked altitude of the aircraft, its
altitude indicator ( climb or descent), its position and speed vector and the MSAW area, informs the
responsible controller if the aircraft is predicted to infringe the Minimum Safe Altitude for the
corresponding area.
This area is modelized either by a CIRCLE or by a POLYGON.
DAIW (Danger Area Infrigement Warning) MAP:
Areas where military manoeuvres, air exercises or shows, etc. area performed regularly, area restricted
to the civil ATC.
The Danger Area Infringement Warning capability ensures that any aircraft infringing or predicted to
infringe one of the predefined danger areas is detected.
This area is modelized either by a CIRCLE or by a POLYGON.
STCA (Short Term Conflict Alert) MAP:
When the system is able to manage traffic collision avoidance on the entire controlled airspace, it is
necessary sometimes to inhibit this processing for specific areas (for instance approach area). STCA
maps are used to inhibit the alert in part of the airspace.
This area is modelized either by a CIRCLE or by a POLYGON.

6.5.1 GLOBAL PARAMETERS
A project is constructed for a specific geographical function. Thus a set of parameters (GLOBAL
PARAMETERS) is mandatory to specify its location.
Click on EDIT followed by GLOBAL PARAMETERS in the MAPGEN window menu bar to display a dialogwindow (see page 44) which is used to enter the following parameters:
MAP SQUARE SIZE (system size)
This gives the size of the geographical zone corresponding to the map. It is the size of the system zone.
MAP PROJECTION PLANE CENTRE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
These give the geographical location of the centre of the maps constructed inside the project. When the maps
are displayed, the centre of the display system will have these geographical coordinates.
PROJECTION PLANE ALTITUDE
This indicates the altitude for which the map of the current project has been drawn up.
MAGNETIC VARIATION
This gives the current delta between GEOGRAPHICAL NORTH and MAGNETIC NORTH.
When all the fields have been correctly filled in, validate by clicking on OK, which saves the values entered.
Abandonment causes a direct return to the previous state without saving the values (click on CANCEL).
6.5.2 SYMBOLS
To construct maps inside a project, a few symbols are necessary to display beacons and the graduations of
the vectors.
A logical number is used in all the graphic elements to select a symbol. An effective code and a font or a symbol array are used by the operational application and also by the
MAPGEN visualisation to give the graphic appearance of the symbol on the display device.
The EDIT command followed by SYMBOLS gives access to a symbol table (see page 45), and is used to open
a special editing window (SYMBOL editor). A line defines a symbol.
A symbol is identified by a logical number, and specified by an effective code, a symbol number in a font or a
symbol array and a comment.
The logical number cannot take the value of an already existing one. Otherwise, a warning window is displayed
and must be validated (click on OK) in order to continue.
If an effective code, a symbol number in a font or a symbol array provided to describe a symbol does not exist
in the MAPGEN installation (see APPENDIX D, page 64), a warning window is displayed and must be validated(click on OK) in order to continue.
Note: A symbol definition session can be opened when a MAP command is active (for example:To add the symbols which have not yet been recorded).
The modifications of the symbol definitions are taken into account in all the graphic elements using a symbol
logical number.

To construct maps inside a project, very precise positions defined by points are used to enable geographical
positioning of the components of the map. There are five different ways (type of points) to edit points.
The EDIT command followed by POINT displays the point editing window.
At the bottom right, a 5-option menu button can be used to select the type of point for editing window.

Figure 19 - Options to select type of points
The first time, the selected type is GEOGRAPHICAL.
WARNING : For MAGIC Applications, the only recommended type is : GEOGRAPHICAL . Selecting an
other type could lead to malfunctions in geographic data generation.
For each type of point there is a corresponding specific table for point editing (see page 46, 47, 48, 49, 50). A
line supplies the definition of a point.
In the 5 different tables for point editing, a point is identified by an alphanumeric name. It has a comment field
and coordinates.
Geographical points table
Its coordinates are given in LATITUDE and LONGITUDE (degrees, minutes, seconds).
The following types are given for information, their use is not recommended :
Georef points table
Their longitude is given by a letter from A to Z (except I and O), each letter representing 15 degrees more
than the previous one and another letter from A to Q (except I and O), each letter representing a degree and
a value in MiNutes (from 0 to + 59 MN).
Their latitude is given by a letter from A to M (except I), each letter representing 15 degrees, a letter from A
to Q (except I and O), each letter representing a degree and a value in MiNutes (from 0 to + 59).
UTM points table (for military use)
Their longitude is given by a FUSE NUMBER, a COLUMN LETTER from A to Z (except the letters I and O)
and a position E in metres.
Their latitude is given by a BELT LETTER from C to X (except the letters I and O), a ROW LETTER from A
to V (except the letters I and O) and a position N in metres.
MIL points table
Their coordinates are given by a movement on the east-west axis with respect to the centre of the map and
by a movement on the north-south axis with respect to the centre of the map. These movements are given in
nautical miles.
Offset points table
The first operation to define an offset point is to define a reference point, i.e. the name of a point already
defined in another points table. If the point does not exist, a warning window is displayed.
Their coordinates are given by a movement on the X axis and a movement on the Y axis with respect to thereference point. The movement is in nautical miles.

Note: A point editing session can be opened even if a map command is active (for example, toadd the necessary points which have not yet been defined).
The modifications in the definition of the points are taken into account in all the graphic items which use these
points.
The points which have coordinates outside the zone defined by the system zone and that defined by theDISPLAY PLAN CENTRE will never be displayed with the maps.
6.5.4 GRAPHIC ELEMENTS
The GRAPHIC ELEMENTS command displays a graphic elements editor.
This command is accessible only for CLASSIC type maps.
In the bottom right corner, a 7-option menu-button enables the type of graphic elements to be selected.

6.5.4.1 Vector
A vector is defined by an identifier and two geographical points. The direction of the vector is START POINT -
END POINT.
The points used for the vectors must belong to one of the points tables.
The graphic aspect of a vector is defined by an attribute list (see page 51):
DASH TYPE
THICKNESS
FLASHING (yes or no) [see the warning below for restriction]
EXPANDABILITY (yes or no) [see the warning below for restriction]
GRADUATION (yes or no)
COLOUR
GRADUATION SYMBOL (precise and large)
GRADUATION DISTANCE (precise and large)
WARNING : The flashing attribute should always remain to "No", expandability remain to "Yes" and
Graduation remain to "No" (default values), since the other options have no meaning when the map
is translated into Ilog Views objects.
By default the vectors are not graduated but the optional attribute GRADUATION (when it has the value YES)
enables access to the fields used to define the graduation.

Two types of graduation can then be introduced: LARGE GRADUATION and PRECISE GRADUATION. To do
this, the symbol number and the distance associated with each graduation must be given. The symbol number
0 is a small line perpendicular to the vector. The size of this line is different for large graduations or precise
graduations. Symbol numbers different from 0 (logical number) must belong to the symbols table.
The graduation begins at the start point with a large graduation, then the precise graduation is taken into
account. A distance of 0 means that there is no symbol even if a graduation is required.
6.5.4.2 Beacon
A beacon is defined by an identifier, a geographical point, a reference to a symbol, a leader and a label.
The point used for a beacon must belong to one of the points tables.
The symbol (logical number) used for the representation of the beacon must belong to the symbols table.
The leader has a size and an orientation.
The label is composed of text which may comprise as much as 3 lines of 20 characters and which can be
located at different distances from the top of the leader.
The graphic aspect of the components of a beacon is defined by a list of attributes (see page 52) :
FLASHING (yes or no) [see the warning below for restriction]
EXPANDABILITY (yes or no) [see the warning below for restriction]

6.5.4.3 Rings
A ring is defined by an identifier, a geographical point, an internal radius, an external radius, a start angle and
an end angle.
The point indicates the centre of the ring. It must belong to one of the points tables.
The ring can be:
a CIRCLE; in this case the internal and external radii are equal, the start angle is 0 and the end angle is
360 degrees. a CROWN; in this case the internal and external radii are different, the start angle is 0 and the end angle
is 360 degrees.
a SECTOR; in this case, the internal radius must be equal to 0, the start and end angle are different and
not equal to 0.
a CROWN SEGMENT; in this case, the internal and external radii are different and not equal to 0, the
start and end angle are different and not equal to 0.
A ring is composed of a border (outline) and a surface which may or not be displayed.
The graphic aspect of a ring is defined by an attribute (see page 53):
FLASHING (yes or no) [see the warning below for restriction]
EXPANDABILITY (yes or no) [see the warning below for restriction]
RADIUS (internal and external)
ANGLE (start and end)

By default, the surface is uniform but can be changed to a different pattern.
Two types of graduations can then be introduced: LARGE GRADUATION and PRECISE GRADUATION. To do
this, the symbol number and the distance associated with each graduation must be given. The symbol number
0 is a small line perpendicular to the vector. The size of this line is different for the large graduations and the
precise graduations. Symbol numbers different from 0 (logical number) must belong to the symbols table.
6.5.4.4 Broken-lines
A BROKEN-LINE is defined by an identifier and a list of geographical points.
The points define the positions through which the BROKEN-LINE passes.
They must belong to one of the points tables.
The graphic aspect of the BROKEN-LINE is defined by an attribute list (see page 54):
DASH TYPE

6.5.4.5 Polygons
To obtain a polygon with border colour different from the background colour, you must create 2 polygons.
A polygon is defined by an identifier and a list of geographical points.
A polygon is composed of a border and a surface which may or may not be displayed.
The points define the positions through which the border passes. They must belong to one of the points tables.
The graphic aspect of a polygon is defined by an attribute list (see page 55):

6.5.4.6 Text
A text is defined by an identifier, a geographical point and a text.
The geographical point is used to specify the position of the first character of the first line of the text. It must
belong to one of the points tables.
The text comprises a maximum of 5 lines of 80 characters. All types of printable characters can be used.
The graphic aspect of the text is defined by an attribute list (see page 56):

6.5.5 MAP PRIORITY
You can click on EDIT followed by MAP PRIORITY in the MAPGEN window menu bar to display a dialog
window. This enables the map priority to be defined. When the priority of a map is greater than that of another
map, it is displayed on top.
WARNING : It is recommended to manage priorities carefully and to avoid dispersion in priority
indexes (e.g. one map with priority 99 but no priority allocated from 0 to 98), since this characteristic
has a direct impact on performance. It is also recommended to affect a unique priority to each map
destined to be loaded in a Controller Working Position. This ensures highest performance when
displaying/hiding a map on the HCI.
