At the turn of the cen-tury, a group of communityvolunteers got together onChristmas Eve and hosteda free, non-denomination-al, wheelchair-accessibleChristmas dinner.

It was the first ChristmasHaven.

Promoting a sense ofbelonging and friendship ona night that can be hard forpeople with little or no sup-port, the event has happenedevery year since.

Still 100 per cent volunteerdriven, this year’s ChristmasHaven will be held tonight(Dec. 24) at The ACT in

downtown Maple Ridge, at11944 Haney Pl., from 6 to 9p.m.

In addition to a completeturkey dinner, children’sactivities, and a visit fromSanta, there will also be avariety of live entertainment.

Pam Burns, this year’sentertainment organizer forthe event, said the lineupwill include the Maple RidgeDance Circle (MRDC) localguitarist/singer Mike Walker,local couple Mike and Suzy,who entertain with a ukuleleand guitar, Peter Tam, andmany more.

Susan Mitchell, fromMRDC, said this is somethingthat the school has been apart of for the past “six orseven years.”

“It’s something the kidsenjoy doing,” she said.

“I just really think our kidsknow how fortunate they areand like to give back to thecommunity.”

Steering committee memberCorisa Bell called the event an“incredible community cele-bration,” and encourages any-one in the community whomay be alone that evening tocome join the celebration.

Last year, the event drewmore than 300 people.

Bell noted the event evenoffers a free taxi service forthose who wouldn’t otherwisebe able to attend.

Those in need of a ride tothe event can call 604-465-8085 to have their name puton the list.

Coming together for the holidays

The wilderness reserve north of PittMeadows will be expanded.

Metro Vancouver has bought almost eighthectares of marsh and uplands on Pitt River,to help protect ecologically important wet-lands and accommodate recreational activ-ities in the future.

The eight-hectare property will be addedto Widgeon Marsh Regional Park Reserve.The regional park reserve will expand to 627hectares.

“Our regional parks protect significantnatural features, ecosystems, and landscapesin B.C.’s most populated urban region,”said Metro Vancouver board chair GregMoore. “Our parks also provide recreationalopportunities – places where we can experi-ence and learn from nature. These naturalenvironments make our region more liveableand help define who we are.”

The newly acquired land in the city ofCoquitlam may one day be used as a stagingarea for hiking, biking, picnicking, and birdwatching, as well as for water access for the

public to scenic areas of Widgeon sloughand marsh.

“The region’s forests, fields, coastlines,wetlands and watercourses are integralpieces of a habitat network for fish andwildlife,” said Heather Deal, chair of MetroVancouver’s environment and parks com-mittee.

Regional park reserves are open aftermanagement plans are in place. Currently,Widgeon Marsh Regional Park Reserve is notopen to the public. For more information, goto www.metrovancouver.org.

A Maple Ridge clan marks its50th season of decorating.by Eric [email protected]

Moving to a new community canmean a lot of changes.

But when Joan and Ab Fultonmoved to Maple Ridge 19 years ago,one thing remained constant: theirChristmas display.

“This is our 50th year of decor-ating for Christmas,” Joan Fultonsaid. “It’s a family tradition for us;both of our parents had light dis-plays.”

Fulton explained that they “startedsmall” and have added to their col-lection ever since.

Now, the number of lights on

their display equals about 30,000.The display itself features all

aspects of the holiday season.“We have separated our yard into

two main themes: The religiousstory of Christmas and the SantaClaus story,” Fulton said.

One side of the yard features achurch that comes complete withpews, a pulpit, candles, a bible, andother figurines.

The Santa side features the jollyold elf himself, his sleigh and rein-deer, Mrs. Claus, snowmen, pen-guins, hockey players, polar bears,a working train on tracks, and theGrinch.

Like last year about this time,I started feeling the guilt build-ing again, as you, our dear read-ers, told us about the great thingsyou’ve done this past month lead-ing up to Christmas.

The guilt comes from the fact weat The TIMES don’t have time tocover all the great deeds done bythe people of Maple Ridge and PittMeadows to help make Christmasbrighter.

There are also a lot of agen-cies that work extra hard at this time of theyear – the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows ChristmasHamper Society, the Friends In Need Food Bank,community services, the Caring Place, and theseniors society, just to name a few.

And they draw on schools, sports teams, andjust groups of volunteers to raise food, money,and toys for the less fortunate.

So, here I want to highlight just a few of thosestories we didn’t get to...

Like the Maple Ridge Secondary students whocollected 3,600 of food and brought it in by thetruckload. This was more than was collectedat A Pitt Meadows Christmas, the Santa Clausparade, Firefighters for Families, and the CPHoliday Train combined!

But small fundraisers also help. Lorraine Batesat the hamper society reported that students atAlexander Robinson Elementary made rainbowloom bracelets and sold them, raising $137.90 forthe hamper society.

Just to put that in perspective, $137.90 paysfor Christmas meal food vouchers for two smallto medium sized families.

Then there was the Garibaldi Secondary’s KeyClub – a youth Kiwanis club – which organizeda fun-filled Christmas Saturday event for familieswho access the Friends In Need Food Bank.

Garibaldi Secondary also did a food and toydrive – apparently Santa Claus made an appear-ance on the roof – also organized by the school’sKey Club. That brought in more than $2,000

worth of clothes and householditems, more than $750 worth oftoys, $1,450 pounds of food, and$1,650 in cash and gift cards. Theevent sponsored 10 Garibaldi fam-ilies.

But kids don’t monopolize thespirit of Christmas – seniors inMaple Ridge made sure that theirpeers who receive help from theFriends In Need Food Bank get alittle extra at this time of year.

Seniors Helping Santa weremaking gift packages last week which includedshortbread cookies baked by chef Trevor Randeland his crew at Maple Ridge Secondary, a cardmade by Eric Langton students, hand-knit itemsfrom the Craft Ladies at the seniors centre,scarves from volunteers at the Mental HealthAssociation, and gifts from the Panorama SeniorLadies.

The event is coordinated by Bob Foster andCarole Goegan.

In addition, residents from local care homesdonated gift items and food, and Maple RidgeSeniors Village provided gift bags.

Members of the Ridge Meadows SeniorsSociety also donated gifts and food.

Fraserview Village held a fundraiser for theFriends In Need Food Bank and their effortsadded cash as well as 1,590 pounds of food toshelves at the food bank.

The Friends In Need Food Bank feeds about3,000 Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residentsthroughout the year and the agency relies on theChristmas spirit to carry them through the rest ofthe year.

In 2013, however, donations have been down,reported Mary Robson, acting executive directorof the food bank.

So, my Christmas wish this year is, comeJanuary, February, March, and the rest of theyear, folks will keep up the food and moneydrives to make sure the food bank cupboardsaren’t bare when those in need come calling.

It was the night before Christmas...I was planning this week to shine

a light on the munici-pality’s public relations

spin on the mould they“found” for the Christmasbells which have been anidentity for the Maple Ridgedowntown core since the1960s.

Then MARGARET (my“Dragon” program) remind-ed me it’s Christmas Eve,so instead, let me share astory of giving.

Last week at the Friends in Need FoodBank (serving Maple Ridge and PittMeadows) volunteer appreciation dinner,there were some amazing awards given.

One special acknowledgement wentout to three of the volunteers: Vivian,Darlene, and Betty.

I think Vivian has the longest continu-ous record of being a food bank volun-teer.

The fact she now needs a walkerdoesn’t deter her from her daily shift atthe food bank.

And on Saturdays, rain or shine, sheuses public transit to get to Shooters to

lead the Saturday afternoon meat draw,with proceeds going to the food bank.

At least two of the trio have been thereevery Saturday, and this year they aregoing to raise more than $5,000.

Wow!Shooters should also be proud.It doesn’t matter whether your religion

is one that follows “The Book” or forthat matter, whether you have a religion,Christmas is the time to enjoy family, andif you are alone, to reach out.

There are people who care.And if you have kids or grandkids,

tonight is the time to read to them thestory of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas.

An organization with alocal chapter helps lessfortunate kids get off thesidelines and onto theplaying field.by Troy Landreville andHoward [email protected]

From an economic stand-point, Maple Ridge and PittMeadows are two very diversecommunities, with householdson both ends of the fiscalspectrum.

That’s why KidSport playsa vital role in getting younglocal athletes who otherwisewouldn’t be able to afford to,be part of a team and/or indi-vidual sport.

In 2012, the charitable foun-dation, which thrives withinthe grassroots of some 40community chapters aroundthis province, issued $1.2 mil-lion in grants to help morethan 5,700 kids play a seasonof sport.

“In the simplest terms,we give grants to familieswho can’t pay organizedsports registration fees,” saidKidSport B.C. director PeteQuevillon.

“And here in B.C., ourstrength is at the communitylevel. It’s volunteers runningthose community-based chap-ters, in the big centres likeVancouver and the Tri-Cities,to the Fort Nelsons and theDawson Creeks.”

Locally, KidSport assisted165 athletes – 107 males and58 females – in 2012, accordingto Len Walters, who chairs theMaple Ridge-Pitt Meadows chap-ter of KidSport B.C.

The total amount awardedthrough grant applications was$38,114 last year.

Walters said 2013 is runningsimilar numbers but a final tallyhasn’t been counted as of yet.

He added that there were 78kids who played soccer and$16,650 given to the local soccerassociation.

This year, Quevillon estimatesthat more than 6,000 young ath-letes will get their chance to playthrough the organization, whichbegan in B.C. in the early 1990sand has now spread across thecountry.

To that end, the organization

is hosting its second annual Givethe Gift of Sport campaign, anational online fundraising initia-tive, as it attempts to meet thegrowing need for help.

“It has been great that we havebeen able to help that manypeople,” said Quevillon, whoseorganization is trying to meetan annual eight to 15 per centgrowth in demand, “but it’s a lit-tle sad when so many need help,

and we’re probably only scratch-ing the surface.”

KidSport has had a big impactin B.C.’s community sports world,but has also helped in a signifi-cant way in thehigh school sportsworld, allowingthose who couldnot have affordedthe costs, playsuch sports as foot-ball and basketball.

After being filled out, formsare then dropped off at the lei-sure centre in Maple Ridge orPitt Meadows Family RecreationCentre.

Once the application is pro-cessed, the sporting organizationis contacted to confirm costs andavailability to play that sport,then the parent is contacted,explained Walters, who addedthat KidSport then sends a chequeto the organization to pay for theregistration up to a maximum of$300 per child once per year.

A financial verification personmust confirm that the child has

financial barriers prohibit-ing him or her from play-ing a sport.

Walters has been thelocal chairperson ofKidSport for the past fouryears, and related anamusing story about howhe took on the role.

“I coached soccer forabout 20 years and whenmy son stopped playing, Istopped coaching. So aftertwo years of not beinginvolved in any sport, Iheard through the grape-vine… that this KidSportchapter was forming soI attended the first meet-ing,” he said.

Perry Bateson, whooperates Yuen’s FamilyMartial Arts, initiated thechapter.

“Unfortunately I was afew minutes late to themeeting,” Walters con-tinued.

“They had a flip chartwith various names to putin slots, and as I walkedinto the room, there wasone last position to getfilled and Perry said,‘Here comes our newchairperson.’”

KidSport’s philosophyis “kids should have theopportunity to play sports,we don’t want kids sittingon the sidelines.”

Walters said the organ-ization takes those wordsto heart.

“It’s so rewarding whenyou make contact with afamily that’s really deserv-ing. It’s really emotional

sometimes,” Walters said. “I’vehad conversations with parentswhere their voices are crackingand in a sense, they’re holding

back tears. It’shuge, it really is.The kids who arebenefiting fromthis are the oneswho need it themost.”

Jersey Day in JanuaryMaple Ridge – Pitt Meadows

KidSport is hosting its secondannual Jersey Day on Thursday,Jan 23.

Last year it was rolled outin the elementary schools, andkids wore jerseys to school anddonated a toonie, raising $4,000in one day.

“This year we plan to includethe high schools and also reachout into the community and havebusinesses participate, such as cardealerships [and] financial insti-tutes,” Walters said.

We have all seen minorhockey players outside thegrocery store selling raffle tick-ets, or pub night tickets, or theones who go door-to-door col-lecting bottles for their bottledrive fundraisers.

Members of the RidgeMeadows Rustlers atom A1hockey team know that thecommunity has always sup-ported them and recently, asmall group decided to giveback.

On Dec. 15, this groupinvited their families to theVanDusen Botanical GardensFestival of Lights for a night

out (that does not involve anarena) and more importantly,to deliver their donations to theMake-A-Wish Foundation.

Remembering that people

need to think of others, theplayers delivered presents forthe foundation to put intobackpacks, to amuse wishkids during their travels, or

to use as ice-breakers duringinterviews.

Although some members ofthe team could not attend, theysent donations anyway.
