The Beagle is a long-established breed, descending from the Foxhound, the Harrier and the Kerry Beagle. Theywere most commonly used for hunting hare, quail and pheasant, although nowadays they also make excellentfamily dogs and have even been used in police work. The origin of the Beagle’s name is debated. Some peoplebelieve the name derives from the Celtic word “beag,” which means “small” or from the French word “begle,”which means “useless” or “of little value.” The Beagle was introduced to the United States in the 1860’s andthe breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885.

Beagles have been bred mostly for form and hunting ability and any hound color is permitted on their shortcoats. This means that Beagles come in a variety of blacks, tans, browns, reds, blue (a silver color), and maybe ticked (mottled with white) or have white markings or be white with colored spots.

DO YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF THESE BEAGLE TRAITS IN MAPLE?

The Cairn Terrier dates back to the sixteenth century, although the first public presentation of the breed wasnot performed until 1909. The Cairn Terrier originated on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. They were originallybred to hunt smaller animals, such as foxes, weasels and rodents. Once known as the Short-Haired Sky Terrier, the name “Cairn Terrier” wasn’t actually implemented until 1912. The name “Cairn” originated from rockformations in Scotland used to mark land boundaries and burial sites. The Cairn Terrier often hunted the verminthat would infest the formations. The breed received American Kennel Club recognition in 1913. The bestknown Cairn Terrier in the United States to date is Toto, from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Identificationof the state of Kansas with the original story led a resident of Wichita, Kansas to start a movement to makethe Cairn Terrier the official dog of the State of Kansas.

The Cairn Terrier may be any color apart from white, including black, cream, gray, red, silver, wheaten, orbrindle striped shades. Black markings, points, or a black mask are also frequent and desired in this breed.

The Shih Tzu was a breed that was created in Tibet during the seventeenth century. The development of theShih Tzu was achieved by the crossbreeding of the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese breeds. This crossbreedingoccurred when a Lhasa Apso was given as a gift by the Dalai Lama to the Emperor of China. The Emperor hada Pekingese in his palace and this Pekingese mated with the Lhasa, resulting in the world’s first litter of ShihTzu puppies. Eventually, the breed became very popular in the Imperial Court, but in 1908 after the death ofEmpress T’zu Hsi, most Shih Tzu breeding came to a stop. This was further complicated by the CommunistRevolution in China, which nearly caused the breed to become extinct. The Shih Tzu was saved, however,by a pool of 14 dogs that were introduced into England. The Shih-Tzu did not find its way to America untilafter World War II, when they were brought back with American soldiers. The breed received official AmericanKennel Club recognition in 1969.

The Shih Tzu is a breed with a wide variety of colors, with all permissible under the breed standard. Thecolors can be blacks, browns, silvers, creams, and brindle (black and brown pattern) in solid, particolor ortricolor with lots of white. Black markings or a black mask are also seen in this breed.

DO YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF THESE SHIH TZU TRAITS IN MAPLE?Alert, active, playful and are usually friendly dogs. Can participate in dog sports such as agility andrally or competitive obedience.

Stubborn tendencies may be lessened by usingreward-based training involving small treats andfavorite toys.

Shih Tzus are moderately active when indoors andsince they are small do well in apartments.

May be intimidated by other dogs, causingdefensive barking leading to confrontations.

HOW ARE KEY PHYSICAL TRAITS INHERITED?THE INFLUENCE OF BREEDS ON APPEARANCEThis report reveals the breeds detected in your dog’s DNA. It also includes checklists of physical traits associatedwith these breeds. Breeds can combine their influences in countless, fascinating ways. It’s a unique combinationthat makes your dog one-of-a-kind.Your dog may behave like - or strongly resemble - just one of the breeds in its makeup, but - much more commonly- your dog’s looks and personality will blend aspects of these breeds. Consider the example below...

In this example, you can see how many of Frankie’sphysical traits are due to a blending of breed influences.

FEATHERINGThe longer hair on thelegs, tail and around theears, is due to dominantmodifier genes availablefrom the ShetlandSheepdog.

BLACK PIGMENTThis coloring in thenose, eye rims, lips andpads on the feet is dueto one copy of the blackgene variant, availablefrom all three ancestralbreeds.

WHITE SPOTTINGThis is due to a lack of pigment andis often found in the extremities (feet, chest, face, etc.), but can also extendover more of the body. It can be due tomany genes including those found inthe three ancestral breeds here.

BRINDLE COAT COLORThe black and tan striping in Frankie’scoat is a dominant trait coming fromone copy of the brindle gene variant. This is available from the ItalianGreyhound, Parson Russell Terrier andShetland Sheepdog.

SHORT HAIRThis is due to one copyof the gene variant fromthe Italian Greyhound orthe Parson Russell Terrierthat is dominant over thelong coat gene from theShetland Sheepdog.

Wisdom Panel® found these breeds in our example dog Frankie:

WHAT DOES THE MIXED BREED ANCESTRY MEAN FORMAPLE?

A portion of Maple’s ancestry was predicted to be mixed beyond 3 generations. While it is difficult toidentify strong breed signals in this mixed portion, the 5 breeds with the strongest statistical likelihoodidentified in the analysis of your dog’s DNA are listed below.

The breeds are listed by the relative strength of each result in the analysis with the most likely at the topof the list. One or more of these breeds could have contributed to the genetic makeup of the ancestorsindicated by the mixed breed icon. Note that it is highly unlikely that all these breeds are present inMaple’s ancestry.

There could also be a breed or breeds present in the mixed breed component that cannot be detected withthe current database of over 200 breeds.

PREDICTED ADULT WEIGHT PROFILE:Based upon the breeds detected in Maple’s ancestry and the genetic markers analyzed by Wisdom Panel® Insights™,as well as the information provided that Maple is Female and Spayed, we have calculated the likely weight that Mapleshould reach when an adult. The Wisdom Panel Insights target weight profile is presented as a range based on theunique mix and proportion of breeds detected.

    • The adult weight is predicted to be between 12 - 23 lbs.

Many factors can influence an adult dog’s weight, including sex and neuter status. Both of these factors have beenused to calculate the predicted weight profile. Another major influence on canine weight is body condition score, which is a factor of your dog’s lifetime nutrition and exercise regimen. If your dog’s body condition is different fromthe ideal body condition score, we anticipate that your dog might be under (if underweight) or over (if overweight)the weight predicted by Wisdom Panel Insights.

    • Are there any specific issues that may be relevant to my dog’s well-being?

    • Are there any special techniques that may help in training a dog with this particular mix?

    • Are there any particular dietary considerations to bear in mind for a dog like mine?

HOW WISDOM PANEL INSIGHTS WORKSThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells andexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lastthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twodifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differentgreat-grandparent breeds allowed.

Our computer used information from over 200 breeds and varieties from our breed database to fill these potentialpedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave eacha score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree withthe overall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidencethreshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart.
