    Low-Level HIV Prevalence has not consistently exceeded 5% in any defined subpopulation

    and in 50% in atleast one defined subpopulation and

    is 1% in pregnant women.

  • To collate, analyze and disseminate accurate information on the prevalence of key risk behaviours and of HIV in selected vulnerable groups in order to guide the development of prevenation and care programmes and policies in pakisan.

    Project Goal

    Project Objectives

    1. To conduct geographic mapping of MSW, Hijra, FSWs. IDUs in selected sites.

    2. To draw a representative sample of MSWs, FSWs, Hijra, IDUs in selected sites for the conduct of integrated behavioural and biological surveillance.

    3. To collect socio demographic and behavioural information and Dried blood spot specimens from selected sample of MSWs, Hijra, FSWs and IDUs in selected sites.

    4. To collect venous blood from a sample of FSWs and Hijra in two sites (Karachi and Lahore) to assess the prevalence of current syphilies.

    5. To analyze integrated behavioural and biological data and disseminate it to policy makers and other stake holders.

    Some of the key terms that need to be defined include:

    High risk activity (HRA) refers to: Commercial sex work performed by both FSW as well as MSW/ESW. Injecting behavior of Injection drug user - IDU.

    Seeking risk: Searching for clients (FSW's), purchasing drugs (IDU) or searching for partners (MSW's/hijras).

    Taking risk: engaging in sex (commercial sex work) or taking drugs (IDU).

    Prevalence: the presence of HRA at a given place.

    Estimates: the reported number of participants engaging in HRA.

    Work place congregations: places where HRA participants gather in large numbers.

    Fluctuations: the increase or decrease in the number of HRA at a given place.

    Network operators: persons who facilitate operations of HRA.

    Spots: may be defined as a specific point within the geographical area, where the HRA takes place. This spot is likely to be identifiable with a specific postal address.
