IMAM’S ADVICE Assalamu Alaykum and Ramadan Kareem dear Community Members,

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).”

Abu Huraira (ra) related that the Prophet (pbuh) said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiv-en. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven (Bukhari, Muslim).

It is with much joy that we welcome the blessed month of Ramadan. We thank Allah, The Merci-ful, for giving us an opportunity again this year to seek His favor and His forgiveness during the holy month. Despite the long summer hours, our community feels very excited this month to renew our commitments to Allah and His Deen, to reconnect with the Prophet (pbuh) and his teachings, to rejuvenate our souls and spirits and to rekindle our family and social bonds. At MAPS, we have been busy preparing for the Generous Month.

During this month when the Qur’an was re-vealed, we have a number of programs planned to deepen our spiritual attachment to Allah, The Almighty. We will be having Taraweeh prayers nightly and Qiyam-ul-Layl in the last 10 nights. We are having a Qur’an memorization compe-tition. Ar-Rahmah Academy will start a Qur’an intensive course on June 23rd for several age groups. Precious Hearts will start a Ramadan Enrichment class for ages 4-6. And many more programs are being planned by various com-mittees and groups. Please visit www.mapsred-mond.org for the latest program schedule and information.

During this Month of fasting, we will be hav-ing daily Iftaars for singles, Friday and Satur-

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEPREPARING FOR RAMADAN

• Donate some money to MAPS for the poor or to upkeep and grow our mosque; fulfill your pledge

I pray that Allah, The Most Glorious, will accept all of our efforts and fast and will forgive all of our short-comings and sins during this month. I look forward to seeing and meeting all of you at MAPS this Rama-dan. Please remember all the board members and volunteers in your dua’s during this month. They have been the backbone of MAPS and have been hard at work to deliver an excellent experience to the community. Jazak-um-ullah-Khairan,

Saturday Iftaars for the whole community and one inter-faith Iftaar for our non-Muslim friends and neighbors. The mosque will be opened for long hours and on many days for 24 hours. To that effect, we are preparing the building nicely. We have been ac-celerating our projects to put two commercial grade playsets on the east side of the building, to open up a state-of-the-art library and to construct a modern coffee bistro and seating area. We are also repainting and recoating the mosque, cleaning up the landscap-ing, adding furniture to the lounge area and redeco-rating the halls.

Let us all strive to reap the best rewards during this month. Let us all make an effort to fast, increase our prayers, do good deeds, stop our bad habits, ask for Allah’s forgiveness, beg for His mercy, forgive those who may have wronged us, thank those who have helped us, reconnect with our parents and relatives, assist those in need and establish our mosque and community.

More specifically, I am asking all of our community to do 3 + 3 things this Ramadan: Personal 3:• Encourage your kids to fast, even if for a few hours, and have a few Iftaars with your family• Memorize one Surah of the Holy Qur’an• Spend some time praying alone in the middle of the night Community 3:• Attend at least a few Taraweeh and Qiyam-ul- Layl prayers at MAPS• Attend at least one community Iftaar at MAPS

if it falls during Jumuah/late night Tarawih prayers. Having a cou-ple of items handy to help her/him fall asleep, such as a favorite blanket and teddy, can smooth the transition to sleep.

7. TAKE ACTIONIn case of misbehavior, show re-spect to others: consider remov-ing the child from the Main Hall and moving to other designated areas for Father/Kids and Moth-er/Kids rooms. If you expect the child to make noise, sit near the exits, so you can leave the Main Hall in a hurry.

4. DON’T SHRUG REMINDER SES-SIONSThe Masjid has the responsibility to provide frequent friendly re-minders for parents and children on the rules and manners of the Masjid. These announcements can be boring and even irritating but please understand that they are needed and help communi-cate the message.

5. CORRECT GENTLYAnas bin Malik relates that “the Prophet did not use insults or bad language or curse” (Reported by Bukhari). Our duty is to re-mind children gently about the etiquettes of the Masjid. Children of all ages will stop and listen to a person who smiles, says Salam, chats with them, and shows con-cern for their needs. Children will ignore, evade, or insult a person who treats them with harshness, anger, and insults.

6. BE AWARE OF THE CHILD’S ROUTINE If the child usually naps just be-fore noon every day of the week, it is reasonable to expect the child will be getting tired as his usual nap time approaches even

“If we want our children to feel they belong in the Muslim community, they must feel welcome at the Masjid.”

The Messenger of Allah came out to us for one of the two later prayers [Thuhr, Asr], carrying Hasan or Hussein. The Prophet SAW then came to the front and put him down, said Takbir for the prayer and commenced praying. During the prayer, he performed a very long prostration, so I raised my head and there was the child, on the back of the Messenger of Allah, who was in prostration. I then returned to my prostra-tion. When the Messenger of Al-lah had offered the prayer, the people said: “O Messenger of Al-lah! In the middle of your prayer, you performed prostration and lengthened it so much that we thought either something had happened or that you were re-ceiving revelation!” He said: “Nei-ther was the case. Actually, my grandson made me his mount, and I did not want to hurry him until he had satisfied his wish” (Reported by Nasaa’i, Ibn Asaakir, and Haakim).

The Messenger of Allah would pray holding Umaamah bint Zaynab bint Rasoolillaah. He would put her down when he prostrated, and then pick her up again when he stood up (Report-ed by Bukhari and Muslim).

The Prophet SAW said: “When I stand for prayer, I intend to pro-long it, but on hearing the cries of

Here are a few tips for accom-modating children at MAPS this Ramadan:

1. MAKE USE OF THE BABYSIT-TING ARRANGEMENTSMAPS is hiring several babysitters throughout the month of Rama-dan. We are planning month-long activities and crafts for all children who attend. There is no fee to drop children with the babysitters. Please make use of these arrangements. If you chil-dren are not praying by your side, they need to be in the babysitting room. At no point can we have children left by themselves inside the halls or outside in the parking lot.

2. USE THE PARENTS’ ROOMS Remember that MAPS has a sepa-rate Mother-and-Kids room and another Father-and-Kids room. These rooms are safe and both have live video and audio feeds of the prayers. Please use these rooms if you are praying with your children.

3. OFFER TO HELPInstead of staring at a father as he runs after his energetic toddler or a mother as she struggles to calm a quiet baby, offer to help. A po-lite “can I watch your son while you pray” or “would you like me to hold that diaper bag” earns Sadaqa for you and helps parents control their children

a child, I cut it short, as I dislike to trouble the child’s mother” (Re-ported by Bukhari).

These hadiths illustrate how nat-ural it was for babies, toddlers, and children to be part of the Prophet’s Masjid. The Prophet (pbuh) understood the nature of children and cared for their needs and comfort in the Masjid.Children thrive where they feel a sense of belonging. If we want our children to feel they belong in the Muslim community, they must feel welcome at the Mas-jid. Children gathering or play-ing with friends are not signs of a rowdy Masjid or misbehavior. They are signs of a flourishing community in which children are building friendships that will con-nect their hearts and minds to the Masjid.

At the same time, a Mas-jid is a place where people come to spiritually connect with Allah SWT and expect a peaceful, quiet environment to worship, pray and reflect. When children are running around or being loud during the prayers, it can distract worshippers from hearing the khutbah/salah being de-livered. This may also cause the imam to lose his train of thought and disturb his focus.
