, Cuéllar, settled since prehistoric times on several hills and surrounded by the lar-gest area of resinous pines in Europe, is the largest provincial town in Segovia with a populationof 9,800 inhabitants. It is essentially defined as the “Mudejar town”. When walking along its steepold streets one may be surprised by the great monumental richness which has been left in thestreets and buildings of the town over the passage of time: palaces, emblazoned houses, verna-cular architecture, convents, the castle, churches and walls, with their stone towers, define the

skyline of Cuéllar. Repopulated from the 11thcentury, it was above all in the 13th century whenthe economy began to boom based on the wooltrade. Such wealth meant that in only one cen-tury more than a dozen Mudejar churches werebuilt, using brick as the basic material for their fa-çades and apses, timber for the hand-crafted cei-lings and walls of limestone masonry for the rest. These all serve to make Cuéllar the richest Mu-dejar centre in Castille-Leon. It is also worth no-ting that it was here where the three Medievalcultures on the peninsula lived in harmony: Jews,Moors and Christians. Vestiges of this cohabita-tion remain such as the Jewish quarter, the Mo-orish quarter street or the Muslim necropolis ofSanta Clara (St. Clare), authentic testimony to thelarge Medieval complex.
The inhabited castle
This is a theatrical visit in the “El Torreón de laMemoria” (the tower of memory) and in thecastle cellars, where every weekend of theyear, different characters give life to their smallbattles, stories, or the harsh jobs they carriedout in the Middle Ages.Castle of Cuéllar - Palacio, s/n -www.cuellar.es / [email protected]. 921 142 203 (Tourist office)

Church of St. Peter
Despite the fact that the greatest period of Me-dieval architecture was the 13th century, alreadyin the 11th century the Romanesque church ofSan Pedro had been erected, located in thelower part of the town. It is the culmination ofthe second walled area of the town, its apse ser-ving as the defensive bastion of a fortified gatenext to the church which was preserved untilthe beginning of the 20th century.
Church of St. Stephen
In the upper part of the town, it serves as abuttress which closes the walls of the citadel. The apse is the most representative of theCastillian Mudejar, as well as four alabaster

tombs on the inside, although from the 16thcentury. It is an interesting complex with its ne-cropolis, recovered as part of the Medieval ar-chaeological site of San Esteban, wheretanneries, ice houses, food stores and anthro-pomorphic tombs can be seen.
Church of St. Martin
Of all the Mudejar churches, San Martín is dis-tinguished for its state of conservation, resto-
red by the local restoration workshop. It is thefirst in which Mudejar in its pure state can beseen, free of plasterwork and moldings fromother centuries. This church currently housesthe Mudejar Art Visitor Centre.
Church of St. James
Only the apse remains of this aged monument. It is interesting as one can see the rows ofbrick arches, the arrow slit windows or the ex-cellent views it affords of the horizon: the seaof pine trees.
Church of St. Andrew
Outside the town walls, it has one of the mostperfect Mudejar ground plans. Three naves, one central and two lateral, are finished with atriple apse with brick arches and cofferingwhich continue on the exterior walls of the la-

teral naves. It houses a wealth of sculptures, represented above all by a Romanesque Sta-tions of the Cross, as well as the Mudejar pain-tings recently discovered in the apses.
Church of the Holy Saviour
This is also a Mudejar church with an apsewith brick arches and coffering, where impo-sing flying buttresses serve as buttresses to theapse. Also noteworthy is its slender tower lo-cated at the church.
Other noteworthy churches
In terms of Mudejar architecture these areSanta María de la Cuesta, the church of la Tri-nidad (Holy Trinity), the church of Santo Tomé,the church of San Miguel (St. Michael) or thetower of the old church of Santa Marina, an ex-

cellent example of Castillian Mudejar architec-ture. In terms of remaining convents, we couldmention the area known as “Paseos de SanFrancisco” (the footsteps of St. Francis) as aconventual area. Here, three important foun-dations may be found: San Francisco, the mostdistinguished in the town as it is the burial placeof the Dukes of Alburquerque and part ofCuellar's nobility. Not in vain was it consideredas a cathedral. However, its ruin, plundering andabandonment at the beginning of the 20thcentury, led to its definitive disappearance. Inrecent years it has been recovered, having res-tored the lateral chapels. Santa Ana largely con-serves its 16th century architecture, although itwas modified after the government-enforcedsale of church property when it passed intoprivate hands. La Concepción is an 18th cen-tury Baroque church, built upon an earlier
structure from the 16th century. Inside, an im-portant altarpiece by Pedro Bolduque hasbeen preserved. Currently it is occupied by asmall community of cloistered nuns. In thesouth of the town, next to the A–601 road, theconvent of Santa Clara (St. Clare) can be found, late Gothic with a Renaissance façade andcloister. Inside the main altarpiece has beenpreserved, a Romanesque Christ and impor-tant pieces from the house of the Dukes of Al-burquerque brought from the church of SanFrancisco.

Fortified town
If anything defines Cuéllar, other than its Mudejar churches, is its nature as a large walled town. The-refore, at any point during one's visit, large stretches of different defensive lines can be seen. Two wa-lled areas dominated by the castle and reinforced by inner walls make up the fortified town. Importantgates such as that of San Basilio, San Martín and San Andrés have been preserved as well as archessuch as that of Santiago or that of the Jewish quarter. Nowadays it is possible to walk along the wallsfrom where one can enjoy stunning views of the Medieval town.
Most important of all in this defensive complex is the castle-palace of the Dukes of Alburquerque, the most emblematic building in the town. Set apart by its imposing towers, and its large bailey witha gallery on the southern façade; both Renaissance. Nowadays it is an educational institution and apart is used for guided theatrical tours.

PALACES, NOBLE HOUSES AND
VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE
There are still streets in Cuéllar with an olden-dayatmosphere where one can get a feel for what lifewas like in centuries past. To walk through the townis to admire its palaces, emblazoned houses or itsvernacular architecture, built with timber framesand adobe or limestone masonry. Noteworthy arethe palace of Rey Don Pedro I (Peter I), one of thefew examples of Romanesque civil architecture, orthe palace of Santa Cruz, an example of late civilMudejar. The Estudio de Gramática (grammar stu-dio) must not go without mention, founded in the15th century, or the noble houses of the Daza,Rojas or Velázquez families in San Pedro street.
