Editor’s MessageFinally, all the tempting spread of too much cookies and food from the Chinese New Year festivity is over. And so timely that we are saying ‘HELLO’ to our WT Mar/Apr 2016 issue member feature – the super fit couple Mr Rayman Fan and his wife, Miu Yin, who do their exercise at Warren about 3 - 4 times a week! Timely for a renewal of resolution to start some new ‘keep-fitter’ programme and lose some of the excess (for me, surely!). Rayman and Miu Yin are probably familiar faces with Warren gym regulars. How much more do we know about them? Turn to the centre spread of this issue for an engaging ‘chat’! Since the WT Jan/Feb 2015 issue, we have been showcasing Warren members as our cover features - our way of getting to know more about our members - celebrating their achievements, their passion, their aspirations, their interests, their lifestyle. You may recall these previous features - Young golfers Jacqueline Young (WT Jan/Feb 2015) and Donovan Lee (WT Jul/Aug 2015);

Swimmer Ong Jung Yi (WT Mar/Apr 2015); Bowler Joy Yap (WT May/Jun 2015); The Chew Swimming Siblings (WT Sep/Oct 2015); The Tais Shuttler Siblings (WT Nov/Dec 2015); how Howie Soh competitively swam his way from real life to 15 seconds of fame in reel life (WT Jan/Feb 2016) – someone whom most may now know only as a golfer who’s a certified SPGA teaching professional at Muru Golf Academy. If you have missed any of the past WT features, you can download a copy from www.warren.org.sg/ewarrentidings - and browse the new-look Warren website if you have not yet done so.

We shall continue to use these WT cover features to get to know more members – singly, or in groups, or in families. Drop us a note ([email protected]) to give us some names to introduce ourselves to them, or why not do a ‘selfie’ for us to chat with you!

On the topic of staying fit, healthy and happy, and with the March school holidays around the corner, we hope some of these upcoming competitive tournaments and social activities are already on your plans:

• 9-Pin Tap Bowling Tournament (Sat 12 Mar)• Henderson Waves Bridge Walk (Sat 12 Mar) - actually I

was quite unaware that such a bridge or a walk existed until this activity came about! How many of us know about this ‘tourist attraction’ with its gorgeous-looking wavelike structure - 36m above the busy Henderson Road, some 274m long and 8m wide. It is Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge, connecting Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park with a beautiful 9km (5.6 mi) trail in a lush open space.

• Warren Squash Open 2016 (Qualifying Rounds: 25, 26, 27 March; Finals: Sat 2 Apr)

• Warren Ladies Open 2016 (Fri 15 Apr)• Mahjong Competition (Sat 16 April) – an exercise of the

fingers, hands, wrist and mind! • Calling all Dads - sign up the kids to hand-make their

‘HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY’ gift (Sat 7 May)• And there’s also the 5D3N Mauritius Golf & Social Tour

(7 - 11 Jun)

ENJOY!

Captain’sMessage

Oh Kian Beng

I’m sure many are just like me, finding it challenging to shift out of that festive mood that we had been immersing in for the past couple of months. This however, certainly does not apply to our Warren League Team players who have already been hard at work, honing their golfing skills and improving their games in preparation of the SGA League Games which will be taking place from April to October 2016. Warren will be hosting 6 games with a few games having to be played on a 9-hole basis due to the course renovation. All the best to our Warren League Team players! We will be rooting for you. Do your best for that’s all that matters.

A group of our golfers are excitedly gearing up for the 5D4N golfing trip to Haikou which is just round the corner. The trip is fully subscribed and the 31 golfers will be leaving for the trip on 25 March 2016. Haikou is a beautiful and quiet city located on Hainan Island, China. This charming city is not only famous for its scenery and seafood, it has also been one of the perfect choices for a game of golf for many golfers. I wish everyone a safe trip and I’m looking very much forward to hearing all your fun and interesting stories of your visit.

For those who have missed the Haikou trip, fret not as we have more coming your way. We have arranged a different trip to another golfers’ paradise - Mauritius! Jointly organised by the Golf and Sports & Events Departments, this 5D3N trip (7 to 11 June 2016) will cater to both golfers and non-golfers. Mauritius is an island of beauty and charm, with lovely, white sandy beaches. Embark on this trip with us and expect yourself to fall in love with this enchanting island.

Warren will be hosting the 27th Singapore Open Senior Amateur Championship (SOSAC) from 26 to 28 April 2016. This has set a little milestone for us as this is the very first time that this prestigious event is held at our Club. We are looking forward to receiving all players of this tournament and I wish all of them a good game.

April will see us playing host to another group of golfers - our friends from Kluang Country Club. They will be coming over for a visit on 17 April 2016 and aside from some golfing action, there will of course be a “makan” session, with loads of fun and laughter topping up the food menu. Golfers, we welcome you to join us for some great catchup with our buddies from Kluang.

Golfers must be eager to hear some updates on our upcoming course renovation. We are currently in the tender process and the tender is targeted to be awarded in April. So right now, we are still on schedule for the renovation to begin in June. More information will be presented to golfers in due course.

Know Your Rules

1. In stroke play, a competitor concedes his fellow-competitor a short putt and knocks the ball away. The fellow competitor lifts his ball, does not replace it as required by Rule and plays from the next tee. The fellow competitor is disqualified.

2. A player’s ball lies in a bunker. He casually throws a rake into the bunker for use after his stroke. The rake does not move his ball or improve the lie of the ball. The player is penalised for testing the condition of the bunker.

3. A player dropped his ball twice under a Rule and each time the ball rolled nearer the hole. He then dropped the ball a third time instead of placing and played from the new area. In stroke play he is penalised 2 strokes.

4. A player plays a stroke with his own ball in the rough and also hits an old abandoned ball which was hidden beneath his ball. Since he struck the hidden ball he therefore played a wrong ball.

5. In stroke play, A’s ball and B’s ball are in the same area on the putting green. A marks the position of, and lifts, both balls with B’s consent. When A replaces them, they are inadvertently exchanged and A putts out, from the right place, with B’s ball and vice-versa. Each player is penalised two strokes.

Take 5 with Warren’sSenior Swimming Coach

Luke TanHe is a man with a mission. And he’s here to shape our young Warren swimmers to be competition-ready! We had a friendly chat with Coach Luke as he shares about his passion for the sport and his plans for our young swimmers.

How long have you been involved in swimming?Swimming has been my passion since I was a little boy. I started training competitively in 1981 under the great Mr Kee Soon Bee at the People’s Association Youth Swimming Club.

When did you decide to become a swimming instructor? It was back in 2009. I retired from competitive swimming. A colleague of mine who knew about my passion for the sport said that I should stay active in swimming. He saw that I had the qualities to become a teacher and said that I should impart my knowledge & experience to young swimmers. He encouraged me to equip myself with the necessary certifications to become a qualified swim coach. I took his advice and that kickstarted my coaching career. It was really good advice.

List down some of your past achievements and some proud moments. In 2013, I flew to Melbourne, Australia for a coaching attachment with Geelong Aquatic Centre. I was given the opportunity to work with the disabled and the elderly in helping them learn how to swim and to build confidence in the water. I also enjoyed my time working with parents in teaching their little toddlers to swim and be safe in the pool. It was memorable and also a learning experience for me!

In 2015, I attained Level 3 NCAP (Master Coach) Certification by Sports Singapore. That same year, I attended the 2015 Swimming World Clinic, held in Cleveland, Ohio, organised by the American Swimming Coaches Association. I learnt a great deal and got to share experiences & knowledge with fellow coaches from around the region. For me, it opened a new horizon in advanced methods of coaching for competitive swimming.

What is an ideal swimming lesson? When I see my students coming to the pool with a sense of enthusiasm & eagerness to learn. That itself will give any coach a source of motivation to help them improve and become better swimmers.

What makes your teaching different?Besides aiming for better performance, I emphasise on character development and discipline in the team. I also work with the parents by incorporating their involvements in the areas of maintaining their childs’ training attendance, diet and good attitude. Parents’ support during swim competitions really go a long way in providing that motivation for the child to excel.

What makes it successful for the students?Students who work hard. Always striving to improve. Possess positive attitude during training. The right motivation. For me, these are the qualities a student must have to be successful.

What do you look for when selecting young competitive swimmers? As a coach, we need to have a good eye for students who are very keen to learn, always wanting to improve and always up for a challenge.

How do you motivate your swimmers to do their best?By continuously giving them encouragement and setting realistic goals that they can strive to achieve.

And what are your plans for Warren’s young competitive swimmers? My plan is for them to participate in the National Age Group competitions and the schools’ national. As for those with potential, we will groom them to secure a spot in schools such as Singapore Sports School (SSP), Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), Raffles Institution (RI), Anglo Chinese School (Independent) (ACSI), Anglo-Chinese School (Barker) and St Andrew’s (SA), just to name a few, through the Direct School Admission (DSA) programme.

The sweltering heat and humidity of my belovedSingapore, almost literally drove me and my wifeto the coldest country in the world - Finland.

We were heading to the Lapland, the day after Christmas in what promises to be a highly anticipated minus 30 degrees of freezing coldness and the thought of searching for the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, a unique phenomena of nature.

After almost 13 hours of flight time, we arrived at Helsinki International Airport and with barely 2 hours of transit time – we were whisked off on their domestic flight to Rovaniemi (the cultural capital of the Lapland), an urban oasis amidst the Arctic wilderness and the Official Hometown of Santa Claus. Bordering on the Arctic, Rovaniemi is an exotic place of snow and ice – you can even eat and sleep in buildings made of these chilly materials.

We had our first taste of the cold winter when we arrived at the airport. The snow covered mountains, trees, buildings and cars was something out of what you would see in a National Geographic episode of a Cold Winter’s Tale – thence our first taste of what would be a thrilling and chilling 10 days of unbridled escapade in a vast winter and snow-covered wonderland with temperatures ranging from between minus 6 to 15 degrees daily.

Our escapade started at the Ranua Wildlife Park – where we had an insight into the lives of winter animals like the snow owls, arctic foxes, wolves, reindeers and the ever popular Polar Bears in their natural habitat. It was minus 8 degrees on that day and we had experienced our first snowing. We were all packed very tightly in our winter gears and it would look like as if we have doubled in size since arriving in Finland. Was wondering if the winter animals were fascinated by us as we are one of them… hahaha.

Travellers’Tales

Have you also just been on a holiday to somewhere exotic or out of the ordinary? Or have youembarked on a exhilarating trip to a golfing destination? Send us your stories and photos (email to [email protected]), and share your traveller’s tales with your fellow members!

Another momentous experience was staying in a heated glass igloo, it felt like sleeping in the open but on the inside it was just as warm and cosy as a hotel. Set in an opening surrounded by pine trees and sufficiently away from the city lights - making conditions ideal for watching the Northern Lights when it appears as well as enjoying the starry night skies.

Personally, my most enjoyable experience was when we were at the Santa Claus Village, where the culture, activities and Christmas magic come together in a show of an enchanting fairyland story. It was like a dream come true for me, when I experienced what it was like to “bring out the child” in all of us. The young and not-so-young were running, screaming and frolicking about in the snow – I too had my fair share of making ice balls and throwing them, just for the fun.

After about 5 days in the “wilderness” of Rovaniemi, we returned to the city life of Helsinki, the capital of Finland known also as the Christmas City. With a population of just over 620,000 people, it is a vibrant seaside city of beautiful islands. The archipelago of Helsinki consists of around 300 islands and the most notable and popular sight is Suomenlinna, the Fortress Island designated in 1991 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was easily accessible via a short ferry crossing from Helsinki.

The husky ride was also another highlight that left an indelible impression on us all. Imagine a husky farm in the middle of “nowhere” where hundreds of barking huskies of all shapes, colours and sizes (not to mention the smell of poop filling the air) welcome you. Being dragged by 6 sled huskies and steering the sledge with my wife sitting in it, through the Lappish wilderness was an exhilarating experience that I will not soon forget. Compared to the husky sled rides, the reindeer rides was literally a stroll in the park.

Also about a 2-hour journey by ferry was Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia - another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 13th Century, the medieval Old Town of Tallinn is known around the world for its authentic cobblestone streets and houses dating back to as far as the 11th Century. After spending hours exploring the snow-covered town, it was time for us to return to Helsinki and it was off to the airport to catch our return flight back to sunny Singapore.

Our activities in the Lapland was generally limited to just about 2-3 hours a day as the “darkness” and icy coldness needs some getting use to – even with all the layers of thermal wears, marino wools and down jackets.

Over the days when we were at Rovaniemi, we experienced the joys and spills of riding the snowmobile on a safari through snow-ladened forests tracks with their beautiful surroundings. It was indeed nerve-wrecking - winding away through these endless tracks in pitch darkness, after which ending up at a large camp-fire site where a very hot cup of tea and atypical Finnish fire-roasted sausage welcome you back from your ordeal.

Unlike the glass igloo, our visit to the Arctic Snow Hotel was indeed a very chilling experience. Carved out from a massive block of Arctic ice, the hotel which houses about 70 guests has a constant temperature of between zero to minus 5 degrees inside – I can’t imagine anyone wanting to stay in such a hotel – brrrrrrrrh. The internal structure of the hotel though, was truly impressive - a feat of human ingenuity with various designed guests rooms, restaurants and a bar as well as a chapel carved out by man and his machines.

All in all, we had a wonderful winter experience that we may not forget any time soon. Yes, it was disappointing that we did not get to experience the minus 30 degrees freezing cold or even to see the Northern Lights – but the camaraderie and warm fellowship of our fellow travellers made up for the very much cherished and enjoyable holiday.

Reunion dinner on the eve of the Lunar New Year is like a magnet that draws all the family members back home. For Warren members Mr Rayman Fan and wife Miu Yin, who found home away from home, any day is a good day for a family union and fostering friendships old & new.

We chat with Warren’s super fit couple from Hong Kong and they are happy to share details of their adopted culture, making friends with the locals, and their integration into the Singaporean way of life.

Warren TidingsMarch / Apr i l 2016Warren Golf & Country Club

Tell us a bit about yourselves before you moved to Singapore. My wife Miu Yin and I came from Hong Kong. I used to work in the electrical & electronic engineering industry with various companies based there. My work travels gave me the opportunity to experience different cultures of the countries that I visited. We both found Singapore culturally interesting and decided to call it our new home.We moved to Singapore in 1991. We became Singapore citizens two years later. What do you do in Singapore? My first job in Singapore was as an engineer in a German consultancy firm. I then moved on to work as a project manager in a local mechanical & electrical company for 20 years. I retired 5 years ago.How did you find the transition to living in Singapore?I would say it was smooth. I find that Singapore is almost similar to Hong Kong in many ways. The country is run very efficiently, transport system is world-class and everything is well-organised. People here are very friendly. I have no problems making new friends with the locals! What has been the hardest aspect to your integration experience so far?Understanding the culture of the locals. I spent about a year or two understanding ‘Singlish’. But we are catching on to this new language and we are settling in fine now. What custom/habits do you find most strange about your adopted culture?I heard that one should never give presents wrapped in black or white paper. And for the elders, never a knive or a clock. What do you enjoy most about living in Singapore? The city is very clean and green. Friendly faces all around. People live in nice comfortable homes. Public transportation is affordable to all. Overall, I enjoy Singapore because it is a very safe and conducive place to work and live in.How did you know about Warren Golf & Country Club and what attracted you to join us?We joined Warren in 1999. It was called Warren Golf Club back then, at Folkstone Road. We were at home leafing a pile of letters from the mailbox and pulled a flyer from Warren. We read all about the Club and we liked its facilities. We signed up as members and we have been visiting the gym ever since. We enjoy our time working out, even until today. We visit the Club even more now since it moved to Choa Chu Kang, because it’s close to where we live!

So what inspired each of you to start working out?We started working out just for one simple reason and that is to keep ourselves fit and healthy. We love doing exercises since we were young. Miu Yin and I come to Warren to exercise regularly, about 3 or 4 times a week. What were your workout goals? It depends on what you want to achieve. Some people want to stay in shape. Some to be better at certain sporting activities. For both Miu Yin and myself, staying fit & healthy is just part of our lifestyle. Is it easier to make friends at the treadmill than at the boardroom table? Do you mainly socialise with other expats or more with the locals here?If we’re sincere about friendship, it’s not hard to befriend somebody. At most times, you don’t need to have common interests to start a good conversation with someone you just met. I stick to the rule of 70% listening & 30% speaking. Most of my friends here are Singaporeans.

What are your top expat tips for anyone following in your footsteps (working in Singapore)?Spend more time to develop friendship with the locals. Blend in. Be up to speed with the current events happening around town.Do you have anything to recommend to others who plan to take up residence in Singapore? Find something that can be a source of motivation. Expand your circle of friends. Be open. Make the effort to learn the local culture. We will grow to be more tolerant, and with that, our integration into the Singapore way of life will be an enriching one. What do you miss most back home?We miss all the good food. We make quick tripsback to Hong Kong few times a year, but thenagain, there’s too much food, too little time!

Sarah Lim:One of Our Youngest

Golfers to Score aHole-in-One at Warren

Last Christmas turned out to be extra special for 10-year old Warren junior golfer Sarah Lim. She hit a wonder shot at Hole 11 on Christmas Eve and earned herself a place in our record books as one of the youngest golfers to have achieved a Hole-in-One at Warren!

“Scoring a hole-in-one was far from my mind. I knew I could only get a birdie or par on the 11th hole. When the ball landed on the green and rolled into the hole, I was stunned. My parents saw it and they were ecstatic. It was a Christmas miracle for me!” says Sarah as she recounts the magic moment.

When asked about her future plans and upcoming golf competitions, Sarah said that she is currently preparing for the upcoming inter-schools golf competition and hopes to move up in the schools golf rankings. “And if I got lucky and scored a hole-in-one again, drinks on me!” adds Sarah jokingly. We wish Sarah all the best in her studies and golf.

Warren Junior Golfer Shannon Tan wins the Gold Medal 2015 at Keppel Club

It was certainly a promising start for our junior golfer Shannon Tan, who opens her 2016 golf event calendar with a win at Keppel Club’s Gold Medal Golf Competition, held on 26 January 2016. She finished top of the table and clinched the Ladies’ Division title.

“I am very thrilled and this win brings a sense of achievement for me!” says Shannon with rejoice. “Winning the Gold Medal serves as an encouragement for me to strive harder and to improve on my game”.

At only 12 years of age, Shannon has bagged the National Primary Schools Golf Championship 2015 trophy. She took home 2nd prize in the Kids Golf World Championship Competition 2014, played in Malaysia. And she has already set her sight on the upcoming HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 2016, to be played this June. We at Warren are all very proud and wish her continued success in golf!
