Term 1 Issue 4 19th March 2021
IMPORTANT DATES Dear Families,
We are fast approaching the end of the term and preparing for the Catholic Liturgical event of Easter. In the last few years, Easter has been in the holidays and we have not been able to celebrate the joy surrounding resurrection of Jesus. We look forward to sharing this celebration with the school community.
Professional Learning
Over the last few weeks, I have been attending leader’s seminars and symposiums which focus on the essentials of learning, teaching and leading. These are great learning opportunities which enhance my commitment to being a life-long learner. The seminars are lead by credible educator researchers from a global perspective. CESA has a system approach to teaching and learning based on the research and case studies by Dr. Lyn Sharratt, a Canadian researcher. Dr. Sharratt is known for her dedicated work with children and analysis of data and how children learn how to learn. Our school will have a Quality Performance Team which will participate in a learning suite with Dr. Sharratt and this team will then transfer knowledge to teachers at CTK which will inform their practice as we continually work towards better learning outcomes for all our students.
Sports Day
What a great day last Friday was. It was wonderful to gather as a whole school community and we are very grateful for everyone ’s cooperation with social distancing. Apart from having fun, all the children had the experience of learning valuable skills of team cooperation and resilience. A big thank-you to the P&F who organised the BBQ, drinks and ice blocks and those who volunteered to cook sausages, set up and pack away. Your help was greatly appreciated. Also a big thank-you to Matt Young and the Sports Day Committee for their efforts with organisation of events and set up of the day, it was a real team effort.
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) Over the last few weeks, I have been receiving details for this year's NAPLAN. The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Year 3 and Year 5 students at Christ the King School will take place from May 10 to May 21, which is Week 3 and 4 of next Cont...

term. Our students will participate in the online version of the test, with the exception of our Year 3 students handwriting the “Writing’ component of NAPLAN tests. There are four components: Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy.
If your child is absent during this period, there is the possibility of completing the assessments upon their return with the two-week window.
If there are parents who have questions regarding their child sitting the test, please contact Emma Heinrich: Leader of Learning, your class teacher or myself as soon as possible to discuss this. This includes parents wishing to withdraw their child from the test. If you would like more information please visit the NAPLAN website. We have also provided information regarding NAPLAN in this newsletter. NAPLAN is a snapshot in time of your child’s learning and together with other ongoing assessment provides a profile about students and their learning.
Swimming Carnival
On Thursday 18 March, Ms. Tierney took a group to the SA Aquatic Centre Oaklands Park to compete in the South Australian Catholic Primary School Sports Association Swimming Carnival. I would like to congratulate all students who tried out for the team and to the final Swimming Squad for the day. It was a successful day for all. We had winning competitors across all sections and Year 5 were awarded the Year 5 Champions Flag. Our ‘dream team’ of Year 5 students also broke the record in the relay freestyle by 3 seconds. All the students were respectful and well mannered as they represented Christ the King School. We are very proud. Well done and thank-you to all the volunteers who helped in multiple ways during the carnival.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
Regards,
Helena Card

In the coming weeks you may hear the words ‘Easter Triduum’ spoken about. The Easter Triduum is the proper name for the three-day season that concludes Lent and introduces Easter. Technically speaking, a triduum refers simply to any three-day period of prayer. The three 24-hour periods of the triduum include the major feasts for all four days at the heart of the Easter celebration: the evening feast of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. The Easter Triduum memorialises the suffering, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On Holy Thursday, the Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper. The Mass of the Lord's Supper includes a ritual washing of feet in most Catholic congregations. The altars are stripped of ornamentation, leaving only the cross and candlesticks behind. Communion will not be distributed until Holy Saturday evening mass. Good Friday marks the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The service does not include Communion on this day. This is also the day the Stations of the Cross that commemorates the journey of Jesus from the trial to his death on the cross. After nightfall on Holy Saturday is the Easter vigil service, which represents the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his burial. This service includes a ceremony of light and darkness, in which a paschal candle is lit to represent the resurrection of Christ; members of the congregation form a solemn procession to the altar. The Easter Vigil is considered the pinnacle of the Easter Triduum, and is usually celebrated with a devotion equal to that bestowed on Easter itself. This is also when adults joining the church are baptised, confirmed and receive First Communion. Easter Sunday marks the end of the Triduum and the beginning of the seven-week Easter season that will end with Pentecost Sunday.
EASTER PARISH MASSES
Due to the current restrictions the parish has explored ways to allow people to attend the various masses over the Easter Triduum. This year there will be no ‘Stations of the Cross’ at Sacred Heart Snr but a smaller service will take place in the church. To attend any of the masses and services over the Easter weekend you will need a free ticket. The tickets are available after weekend masses or from the church office on Strathmore Tce Brighton.
COIN CHALLENGE
As a major fundraiser for Caritas the school will host a coin challenge on Tuesday 23rd March. Classes are asked to bring along their spare change and build a line to see which class can make the longest line. All money raised will be donated to Caritas. FOURTH WEEK OF LENT
Arsad, an Indonesian farmer, had no toilet in his house, so always had to walk into the forest to the open
defecation area. His family was often sick and open defecation area. His family was often sick and open
defecation caused many neighbourhood disputes. With the support of Caritas Australia and its partner agency,
4
Laz Harfa, Arsad took part in hygiene, sanitation and financial management training. He then funded the building of a toilet in his house and helped other community members to save money to construct their own toilet. Now, Arsad’s family is healthier, their community no longer practices open defecation and is more harmonious. Arsad inspired his community to ‘Be More.’ “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” Please support Project Compassion: lent.caritas.org.au Teresa Pascoe

PARENT/CHILD BOOK CLUB
The Holdfast Bay Library Staff (Glenelg & Brighton libraries) are very keen to support the establishment of a parent/child book club within our school or wider community. They are seeking expressions of interest. They have sets of novels suitable for students from Yr4 upwards. 8 copies of each title is provided so a group of 4 students/ 4 parents would be well catered for.
Both libraries have rooms to cater for the gathering, they have suggestions for local café’s, a family could host or the school’s Learning Space could also be a venue.
The group needs to choose a day and time, the frequency (weekly, monthly, bimonthly). Books are on a 4 week loan but can be extended once.
A member of the group is charged with collection and pick up.
If you would like any more information please contact Tracey Glover [email protected] or 8179 9526 (mon, Tues, Fri)

Bully Busters Day This week as a part of our recognition of National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence and in collaboration with Harmony Week, we held our annual Bully Busters Day.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to see all students participating in valuable learning about what bullying is, how it makes us feel and how to deal with bullying behaviours. A Bullying No Way! leaflet was sent home on Tuesday to all families at the school for your reference and understanding. I
It is important you take some time to have a chat with your child/ren about the processes involved in how to deal with bullying behaviours, so that we are all using the same language and strategies.
This may also be a great opportunity for you to touch base with your child about any experience they may have had with bullying, whether as a victim, bystander or bully.
Talk to them about the people they trust to go to if they need help and this may include people from all walks of life including school, sports or the neighbourhood.
Remember we can all make a change by listening, noticing and by working together to stop bullying.
Visit the Bullying No way! Site for more resources and information.

Clean Up Australia Day—Step Up to Clean Up
On Friday 5th March, we participated in Clean Up Australia Day!
After Mass, which focused on God’s love for all of us and his desire for us to ’be more’ for
His creation, all classes grouped with their buddy classes and ‘cleaned up’ our school
environment, including the outside perimeter of the school.
‘Clean Up Australia Day’ inspires and works with communities to clean up, fix up and
conserve our environment. While our participation in ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ was very
successful, our and the rest of Australia’s waste challenges go far beyond one day.
The call now is for everyone to: Step up to Clean Up!
The majority of the rubbish we collected consisted of chip packets,
sandwich bags, muesli bar wrappers, fruit bar wrappers, yoghurt
squeeze pouches etc. These are all ’soft plastic’ items which can’t be
recycled through kerbside recycling services.
BUT if it scrunches, then it can be recycled through REDcycle which
means it’s kept out of landfill, not to mention our beaches and
parks! But best of all, it all gets made into something useful ! So
many ‘soft plastic’ items can all go to lead to another life.
REDcycle bins are found in our local Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.
The REDcycle Program makes it easy for everyone to keep plastic bags and packaging out of
landfill. First, please check the packaging for any sign of the new Australian Recycling Label
(ARL) symbols. In the absence of one of these symbols (note these are gradually being
rolled out to ALL types of packaging — this will just take a bit of time), use the attached
REDcycle flyer, describing what you can REDcycle.
The collected soft plastic is taken to the REDcycle facility for initial processing, then it is
delivered to Australian manufacturing companies who convert REDcycle materials into a
range of recycled products including indoor and outdoor furniture, bollards, signage,
material for road infrastructure, garden edges and plant beds.
Did you know that the outdoor table and benches in our school (under the shade area in
the rock area) was made from recycled plastic?
Recycling soft plastics through REDcycle is one way we can all ‘Step Up to Clean Up’.
South Australia’s ban on single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery is now in action,
with shops banned from selling these single-use items. This ban is the first of its kind in
Australia and specifically prohibits the sale, supply or distribution of plastic single-use items.
Did you know?
84% of plastic used is sent to landfill and only 13% is recycled
By 2050, it is estimated that plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish
Australia uses around 70 billion pieces of soft ‘scrunchable’ plastics, such as food wrappers each year
In Australia approximately 130,000 tonnes of plastic leaks into the marine environment each year
One million tonnes of Australia’s annual plastic consumption is single-use plastic
Australia now produces 2.5 million tonnes of plastic each year, equating to 100kg per person
By 2025, it is predicted that 99% of seabirds worldwide will have ingested plastic!

We’ve been having fun with Autumn Art and this
week we will celebrate St Patrick’s Day. The chil-
dren are excited with the new handballs, prac-
tising their skills and getting ready for handball.
On Wednesday we will make green cheesy scones,
leprechaun houses and pots of gold. Please take
the time to sign your digital signature at pick up.
