Advance Registration for Pinewood Derby Entry forms for our upcoming Central Section Pinewood Derby on Satur-day, March 12, are provided below. Copy these entry forms and complete one for each participant from your outpost, and bring them with you to the derby. Having the entry forms completed beforehand will help expe-dite our registration process for your group the morning of the derby.

By now, many commanders in Cen-tral Section are busy working with their Rangers on their pinewood derby racers – obtaining car kits, helping boys design, shape and paint, patiently laboring to contain the building excite-ment! Pinewood Derby is one of our most looked-forward-to and enjoyable events of the year. We hope you’re planning to bring your Rangers to this year’s race. Here are some tips and reminders that will help make your experience at Pinewood Derby a positive one …

● Complete derby entry forms in advance. This will help the registra-tion process go more quickly.

● Arrive early. The single-most criti-cal factor that can cause delays in our race day schedule is the late arrival and registration of your Rangers. Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 10 a.m.

● Refreshments available. For your convenience, a concession stand will be open throughout the day to serve snacks and hot lunch.

● Is your charter up to date? Out-posts that are not currently chartered with Potomac District Royal Rangers will not be able to compete in Ranger race classes. Participants from unchar-tered outposts will be allowed to com-pete in the Open Class; this applies to leaders and boys.

No wheel substitutions will be allowed; cars made from approved kits must use the wheels provided. No altera-tions to either wheels or axles pro-vided with approved kits will be per-mitted.

6. Pinewood entries made from other than approved kits, or that use alter-nate wheel types, will not be permitted to race.

7. Due to possible schedule conflicts — if a car owner cannot be present to race — a Ranger leader or other desig-nated alternate may race or show a car that is otherwise eligible. RULES OF CONSTRUCTION

1. The Ranger may have help in building his car (dependent on his age and skill) and it may be shaped by any means desired. It does not have to be whittled. Do not design the car so it has a competitive advantage while sitting in the starting gate.

2. All cars entered in competition must be able to fit on and roll down the track. All cars must meet the fol-lowing specifications: (a) A car must not be more than 7½” in length, including all attach-ments. (b) A car must not be more than 2¾” in width, including wheels and axles. (c) A car must not be more than 4” high. (d) A car must not weigh more than 5 ounces.

3. No part of the car may extend in front of the track starting gatepost.

4. All weights must be inside the car, part of the ornaments, or securely attached to the car. A car can be dis-

qualified if the weights are not se-curely attached to the car.

5. No bearings or bushings of any type may be used on any car.

6. No metal-to-metal contact is al-lowed in the wheel assembly.

7. No starting devices (springs, wires, rubber bands, etc.) are allowed on any car. The car must start moving and roll by gravity only; no pushing or blowing will be permitted.

8. You may lubricate the wheels with any lubricant you desire. However, if any lubricant drips or spills on the track from the car it may disqualified. We expect some graphite to fowl the track, but excessive graphite or drip-ping oil will cause disqualification. WORKMANSHIP RULES

1. All cars entered by Royal Rangers at the Pine-wood Derby will automati-cally be considered for a Workmanship Award. The primary intent of this com-petition is to recognize workmanship that is specifically that of a Ranger himself.

2. Workmanship will be judged by at least three judges chosen by the Derby Director. The judges will grade cars according to three criteria: origi-nality, workmanship, and general ap-pearance.

Originality - Take into considera-tion how much creativity went into the design of the car. Is the idea or design unique? Ratings: Fair 1-4 points; Good 5-7 points, Excellent 8-10 points.

Workmanship - Take into consid-eration the Ranger’s skill and crafts-manship; how well the car was cut or carved, sanded, finished, and detailed. Are there excessive “store-bought parts” or decals that did not require

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Royal Ranger Pinewood Derby Project was started with the intent of having a project that a father and son could work on together and to give the boy with no father at home an oppor-tunity to learn with his father image, leader, or sponsor. Through this pro-ject each boy will learn many wood-working skills and good sportsmanship con-ducted in a Christian manner. Please allow the boy to experience as much of the joy of this project as he can. God bless you and may the best car win.

FORMAT OF COMPETITION

1. All races will start at the specified time and participants must allow time to register their cars prior to race time. The races will be conducted in a multi-ple elimination format (see Race Pro-cedures).

3. Classes include Ranger Kids, Dis-covery Rangers, Adventure Rangers, Expedition Rangers, Commanders and Open Class. Only chartered Rangers and Commanders are eligible for the Ranger age-group specific classes.

4. An Open Class is included for par-ents, family members or friends. The cars in this class must adhere to the same rules as other classes and must be a separate car not racing in any other class. The cost will be the same for this class and all other conditions of racing remain the same.

5. The only pinewood car kits au-thorized for entries in all race divisions (Ranger Kids, Discovery Rangers, Ad-venture Rangers, Expedition Rangers, Commanders, and Open) are as fol-lows:

General Appearance - Take into consideration the painting of the car and the color scheme if more than one color is used. Ratings 1-20 points as above.

RACE PROCEDURES

1. Each car must be registered at the registration table, inspected, and placed on the display table before scheduled race time. The car will be given a number to expedite the racing activity. The car will be inspected by members of the Derby Staff for weight and measurements. Scales used by Derby Staff for registering cars will be considered official scales to be used for the event, to provide an equitable standard of measure for all cars.

2. Once a car has completed inspec-tion, no further work or lubrication is allowed without permission of the Derby Director.

3. If, during the race, a car is bro-ken, a contestant may ask the Derby Director for permission to repair the problem only. Do not take advantage of such opportunities to make other adjustments.

4. All races will be run on an elimina-tion basis to determine the fastest cars. The exact method will depend

upon the track being used and the number of cars racing. The method will be explained by the Derby Director prior to the first heat of the race. To eliminate any possible differences in lanes (or perceived differences), cars will rotate lanes on the track in as or-derly a manner as possible.

5. If either a car or parts of a car leave the track or interfere with an-other car before the finish line, the race will be declared “no contest,” and the race will be re-run with the cars in the same lanes. If the same car or parts of the car leaves the track or interferes a second time, the offending car will lose that heat.

6. Only a car’s owner, the official starter, and official finish line judges or workmanship judges may handle the car. Handling will not go beyond what is absolutely necessary. While not rac-ing, all cars will be left on the display table until cleared by the Derby Direc-tor.

7. All cars and participants must ad-here to all the rules and specifications included in this set of official rules or they will be disqualified from the Pine-wood Derby. If you have any doubts about a car or an action, see the Derby Director or a Sectional Staff member as soon as possible while we can still deal with the situation without hurting anyone’s feelings.

The Habitat Hunt The habitats of Ferry Farm’s natural world are explored in this program where students learn about the migration, hibernation and camouflage of various birds and animals as well as the local eco-system. They hike in the woods, look for plants and animals along the river, and participate in activities that explain the interdependence of man, plants and animals.

Enjoy a Unique Place in American History

American Indians, early English pioneers, a gentleman entrepreneur and the boy who would become “The Father of His Country,” all laid claim at one time or another to the area now

known as Ferry Farm.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000, Ferry Farm lies just across the scenic Rappahannock River from the historic town of Freder-

icksburg, Va.

The George Washington Founda-tion is restoring the site’s ecology and protecting its natural resources. Nes-tled in its urban setting, Ferry Farm abounds with wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, foxes, and rabbits. Hun-dreds of bird species, including bald eagles, inhabit its meadows, woods, and the river. Tranquil spots are avail-able for visitors to watch the river or just sit and contemplate all that has

transpired here.

The education staff at Ferry Farm provides programming that enhances public understanding of George Wash-ington, American history and the natural environment. Through a vari-ety of workshops and events, visitors to the farm imagine a simpler time; a time when this country was still a colony and our early heroes were developing the character and courage

they would need later.

Archaeologists have completed a large-scale excavation of a building from the period of 1710 to 1725, believed to be the first house on the property. Digs continue to expose artifacts that tell us more and more about the Washington family and their farm by the river. In 2008, the long search for the site of the Washington house came to an end when the announcement of the find was made

on July 2nd.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS From the North:

On Route 17 east, approaching Fredericksburg, drive 1½ miles past the I-95 intersection. Move into the left lane on the long down-grade and continue straight through the Route 1 intersection at the bottom of the hill. This is Butler Road. Move to the right lane and drive 1½ miles. Turn right onto Cool Spring Road. At the next intersection, move into the center left turn lane. Turn left onto Route 3 East Business, King’s Highway. Just beyond the next light, Ferry Road, turn right into the Ferry Farm entrance. If you miss the first one, the second entrance is just beyond the first. Park on either side of the big Main Building.

From the South: Exit I-95 north at #130 onto Route 3 east. Drive one mile, move into the left lane on the long descent, and turn left onto Route 3 Business, William Street. Continue through downtown Fredericksburg and move into the right lane after crossing the Rappahannock River. The third light is Ferry Road. Just beyond this light, turn right into the Ferry Farm entrance.

swer God’s call to bear witness to Him in our world.

them at all Pow Wow events; prizes to be

awarded to best outpost standards. “Seneca” Run - Measure your Ranger skill in

this individual timed race that will also test

your knowledge in first aid, orienteering, na-

ture study and ropecraft and lashing.

Obstacle Course - Rangers will run, jump, crawl

and (well, you’ll see!) through a military-style field course. Oorah!

“Chariot Race” - It’s time to brush up on your
