MarcEdit Instructions and Screenshots Galore

MARC Breaker [from StartPage]

1. Click “MARC Tools” under Frequently Used Tools2. Browse for Input File (the MARC file) 3. Output file4. Can select browse & type name in same folder5. Shortcut: Copy input file & change suffix of output file to “.mrk”6. Under Functions, the MarcBreaker radio button should be selected by default7. Click Execute8. Will give a message in results box, such as: 9. 306 records were processed in 0.296875 seconds10. Click “Edit Records” Button at bottom to open the file into the MarcEditor

Combine MARC records: Tools → MARCJoin [from StartPage]

1. Source File: Pick a file to be the base file2. File(s) to join: Choose the files you want to add to the base file



Separate MARC records (outside of MarcEditor): Tools → Select MARC records [from StartPage]

1. Choose Delete or Extract2. Specify Source file (at bottom of box)3. Specify display field4. Press “Import File”5. Input search criteria6. Specify whether you want records deleted7. Specify name of file8. If you answered “yes” to delete, then it will put new records in file



Select Individual Records to Make (MarcEditor): File → Select Individual Record(s) to Make [from StartPage]

1. Select Display field (ideally what you will be searching)2. Import file (will import existing .mrk file)3. Put in search criteria4. Export selected5. Will then export records in a temporary .mrk file6. Saving will save it back into original file7. “Save as” will save into new file



Export tab-delimited file: Tools → Export tab-delimited records [from StartPage]

1. Select MARC file & then name text file2. Field Delimiter: will separate each field3. In-field delimiter: defaults to semicolon4. Example: Looking at call numbers



Splitting Files: Tools → MARCSplit [from StartPage]

1. Source file is file you want to separate2. Will separate files into destination folder 3. Records per file or # of files

Merging Records (Tools Merge Record) [from StartPage]

1. Source File is file that the fields will be merged into2. Merge File is what the data will be extracted from (and placed with the records in the source file)3. Save File is what the finished product goes into (unless you check box labeled “Merge into Source”



Harvesting OAI records: Harvest OAI records (under “Frequently Used Tools” in Welcome screen) [from StartPage]

1. Server Address: Example: mulibraries.missouri.edu/staff/catalogdept/mospace/mospaceharvesting.htm2. Set Name: hdl_10355_24753. Metadata Type: Select what metadata the repository uses

1. Search: Text string to search on2. Field: Choose appropriate field3. Options: Can select database (default is Library of Congress)
