JOKE of the WEEK: A Texan walked into a bar with a shotgun in one hand and a bucket of cow manure in the other. He says to the waiter, "I’d like me a cup a coffee". The waiter says, "Sure Tex, coming right up". He gets the Texan a tall mug of coffee, and the Texan drinks it down in one gulp, picks up the bucket of manure, throws it into the air, blasts it with the shotgun, then just walks out. The next morning the Texan returned. He has his shotgun in one hand and a bucket of cow manure in the other. He walks up to the counter and says to the waiter, "I’d like me a cup a coffee". The waiter says "Whoa, Tex. We're still cleaning up your mess from the last time you were here. What the heck was that all about, anyway?" The Texan smiled and proudly said, "I’m in training for upper management. I come in, drink coffee, shoot the s - - - , and

disappear for the rest of the day."

STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW June 9, 1902: Joe Horn and Frank Hardart opened the Automat at 818 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia. It was America’s first coin-operated cafeteria....“Put a Nickel In, Take Your Food Out.” Customers would put nickels into a slot, turn a knob, open a small glass door and take out their food. Horn and Hardart used Swedish-patented equipment imported from Berlin, which already had a successful “waiterless restaurant.” The Philadelphia location was a bargain. The price of a cup of coffee stayed at a nickel from 1912 until 1950 (only 45 cents today), before it inevitably rose to two nickels. They branched out to New York’s Times Square in 1912 and continued to expand, designing their own improved automat equipment. The public eagerly lined up all day long. Employees called “nickel throwers” waited at the head of the line exchanging currency for the nickels needed for the coin slots. One nickel for coffee, five for the turkey and gravy, another nickel for pie... 35 cents for the full meal. Patrons could choose from other windows holding American diner-food favorites, including macaroni and cheese, chicken potpie, Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and baked beans. The desserts renowned: huckleberry, pumpkin, coconut-cream and custard pies, as well as vanilla ice cream with real vanilla beans, and rice pudding with plump raisins. All was prepared in a centralized, assembly-line kitchen using standardized recipes and quality ingredients. Horn and Hardart’s 85 locations in Philly and New York, made it America’s first fast-food chain. The coffee was poured from coin-and-crank-operated dolphin-shaped spouts and was never more than 20 minutes old. Inspired by this, composer Irving Berlin wrote “Let’s Have Another Cup of Coffee”, a ditty that became Horn & Hardart’s theme song. As inflation grew, knuckles full of nickels were replaced by quarters and even tokens from a cashier. Efficiency and the charm of the Automat faded, and the chain ultimately succumbed to rising prices and competition from other fast-food businesses and burger joints. Philly’s last Automat closed in 1990, and New York’s a year later, but it lives on in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where you can see a 35-foot section of Philadelphia’s original 1902 restaurant...“It ain’t your father’s fast food, but it may be your

great-grandma’s comfort food.”

USELESS FACT OF THE DAY:

Mel Blanc (the original voice of Bugs Bunny) was allergic to carrots.

Fighting cervical cancer in rural Bangladesh Adapted from the May, 2017 Rotarian

Bangladesh ranks fourth in the world in deaths from cervical cancer. Prevention and early detection can lead to higher survival rates. The Rotary Club of North Columbus, Georgia, USA, working with the Rotary Club of Padma Rajshahi, Bangladesh, sought a solution to this devestating problem. With a total budget of only $59,500, project sponsors worked with the Rajshahi Cancer Hospital and Research Center to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer through vaccinations. They also worked to raise awareness about symptoms and funded training for female paramedics in 10 villages around Rajshahi. Nearly 1,000 girls and women ages nine to 45 participated in the program. Response to the program was stronger than anticipated; the Rotarians plan to include more villages in a future project.
